I have never liked the look of a marquise as a solitaire or with a pave band but i think they look great as three stone rings with half moons or peras, there are a few on leon mege''s site....

oh and I wanted to say JeraVae If I saw your ring, I would have brought it home in a nano second!! I love it! I have a very similar setting with a garnet..... I''d kill to have one with a diamond as well!

Thank you rhbgirl24. I also ADORE your ring. It''s so stunning. You an I must have very similar tastes. I love all things Celtic and your set is truly unique and beautiful.

My diamond rings are all round brilliants, but I love marquise rings because the shape of the stone elongates my fingers, when set N-S. E-W looks nice in photos on other people, but when I put that on my hand, my fingers look stubby. They also look stubby with square cuts (but not with rectangular cuts).

I think marquise rings are very elegant, generally speaking, whether stylish or not. There are two problems with them, though. Since marquise rings were so popular in the 80''s, they were churned out without real regard for quality by the end of the decade. There are a lot of ugly, unsparkly marquise diamonds out there for that reason. Also, marquise diamonds are still the diamond of choice for those who want ''bang for their buck'', not on Pricescope, but in real life. I think this is because they look so much bigger for the carat weight than any other kind of diamond. Therefore, the people who are ''stretching'' (for want of a better word) have marquises a lot of time. You know, the people who could comfortably afford a beautiful 2-carat diamond, but MUST have a 3 carat, or 4, or 5 that they can''t really afford. A majority of the giant diamonds that are bought to impress without regard for whether they actually look good are marquises, in my experience (and the remainder are pears). Because then you can a 3 carat that LOOKS like a 4 carat (to the uninitiated). But they look so awful that these stones get a bad rap that they don''t deserve.
I know they are coming back eventually though, because a lot of the 13 and 14 year old girls I know really love marquise diamonds. They look at them and say, "Oooh, I never saw a diamond that looked like that before. It''s really pretty." They are very different from the ubiquitous princess cut, and I think they appeal for that reason. Just as the princess probably appealed to the generation that grew up with their moms wearing marquises--someone on this thread said that a huge criteria for a girl''s engagement ring is that it look very different from the one her mom has, and I think that is mostly true.

I have a story for you. Norma Shearer (1930''s) movie star was having a relationship with the vice president of the movie company called Irving Thalberg. When he proposed to her he had a tray full of diamond rings and told her to choose one. She picked the biggest one there, a 5 ct marquise cut diamond.

I tried to get a photo for you. I think it looks beautiful!

I love an antique cut marquise-especially with a large culet

Ditto! Wow, they''re beautiful! Harry Winston had a (although new of course) marquise with a large culet on their website a few months ago... I don''t want to know how much it cost.

Harry Winston and Tiffany sell marquise solitaires. I don''t think they''re out of style. Just my personal opinion.

I have always liked Marquise diamonds. But to be perfectly honest, they are not in style. I inquired at a number of jewelry stores about what shapes were the most popular and every store told me that marquise diamonds were passe and that only older women requested them. You don''t see too many marquise diamonds on display. That being said, the shape that appeals to you the most is most important. Its just useful information to know that the shape is not currently in style.

I''m a little obsessed with east-west marquise rings. Here are some of my favorites (mostly posted elsewhere on this site).
Ms Halo - Do you have a bigger photo of the setting at the bottom left corner? Who is it made by? Looks stunning!

I agree that many of the settings for a marquise are very outdated. I think marquise are lovely when set nicely. My SIL has one and the setting is outdated, and I always want to tell her she should re-set it. But that would be rude as she has never expressed any discontent over it... except for it's size (it's about .7 carat and she wants something larger).

I am thinking about buying a few smaller marquise for inclusion in a RHR. I like them best as sidestone and in mixed cut rings. My favorite way to setting them is bezelling them. But then again, I pretty much like anything in a bezel.

That Leon three stone was a knock out though.

The only cut of diamond I'm not a fan of as a center stone for a ring, personally, is a trillion. And even then, if it's a colored stone trillion, there are a few that I like (usually bezeled, sensing at theme??).
