Hello all,

With my newly acquired and very basic diamond education, I am finding it difficult to decide between the following two stones:

1- 1.20 CARAT K-VVS1 GIA
6.88-6.90 x 4.14
GIRDLE: Medium - Slightly Thick
DEPTH %: 60.20
TABLE %: 58.00
CULET: None
CERTIFICATE: GIA
CROWN ∠: 33.50
CROWN %: 13.50
PAVILION ∠: 40.80
CUT: Excellent
POLISH: Excellent
SYMMETRY: Excellent
FLUORESCENCE: Medium
Clarity characteristics: feather (1 very small feather is noted on the report, no other comment)
This would give HCA EX and AGA 1B ratings

2- 1.23 CARAT J-VVS2 GIA
6.92 - 6.96 x 4.20 mm
GIRDLE: Medium
DEPTH %: 60.6
TABLE %: 57.00
CULET: None
CERTIFICATE: GIA
CROWN ∠: 34.0
CROWN %: 14.50
PAVILION ∠: 40.6
CUT: Excellent
POLISH: Excellent
SYMMETRY: Excellent
FLUORESCENCE: None
Clarity characteristics: Needle, feather, cloud, the largest of which is to the side (close to but not reaching the girdle), with the following additional comment: Additional clouds are not shown. Pinpoints are not shown.
This would give EX rating in both HCA and AGA.

I am hoping the experts on this forum would help me decide. The second one is slightly more expensive but still within my budget.

I will be buying the diamond online. Comparable diamonds in I color and VS clarity were outside my budget and I don't want to go below VS.

What's your budget for the stone?

I like J/K with a high clarity grade. Diamond pricing in this carat range is heavily dictated by the color. VS1, VVS, or even IF can be very affordable. I assume those are 5k ish stones.

You assume right. I have budgeted 5k max for the diamond.

So.. which of the two is better and why?

Lots of Pricescope would choose proportions per the Pricescope cheat sheet, which originally more or less originated with Todd Gray of Niceice. http://niceice.com/diamond-buying-secrets/5-minutes-diamond-buying-success/
Total depth between 59 – 61.8%
Table diameter between 53 – 58%
Crown angle between 34.3 – 34.9 degrees*
Pavilion angle between 40.6 – 40.9 degrees
Lower girdle facets between 75 – 78%**
Star facets between 45 – 50%***
Girdle thickness between thin and slightly thick
Culet: AGS pointed or GIA none

Smaller table 55% and steeper crown angle pushing 35 produce good fire. Low crown angle and large table are biased toward brilliance (white light, brightness.) Diamonds with more 60/60 proportions (60 table, 60 depth) also are biased more toward brilliance than fire. It depends on what look you or the recipient prefer. I want a smaller table and taller / steeper crown than those two you asked about.

#2. J VVS2
Why?
It is a J (still near colorless) within your budget. Is this stone really sub 5k?
Amazing spread. Almost 7mm.
I like the 40.6/34 combo slightly better than 33.5/40.8.

If you can get the actual image and IS/ASET and there is no leakage issue, go for the J.
With 5k budget, the best you can do with I color would be 1.0c I VS2/SI1.

ps. I found the K. It's got clean appearance. I like that too.
ps2. I have a J. I am biased.
