I was surprised to learn that opals can be transparent.
Look at one of those orange Mexican fire opals which is cut into an oval.
Last week when I dropped off the purplish-pink at GIA's lab for verification I only had my cellphone camera with me but wanted to take nice pics.
I asked them if I could bring in my real camera when I picked up my stone this week.
I was very surprised they allow photography there.

Moh--thanks so much for posting these pictures. The campus is beautiful--a fitting place to study gems. I studied at the Los Angeles campus, and when I went to Carlsbad for a visit, I was quite jealous of their ocean view.
