Kenny,

There are more FCD's out there for you in your future so quit talking about maggot food please! Stay positive and know you have a huge group of supports out here who want nothing but the very best for you.

...and let your SO off the hook a little. ;))

Kenny, I am so late coming to this thread but I just wanted to say that I am so sad about your diagnosis. On the other hand, I have
complete confidence that you can beat it.

You are such a great presence here and I so wish I could meet you in real life. I was just showing one of my boys pictures of Kizzy and
Yaya just the other day, and I am constantly showing them your posts! It is hard not too, when I am laughing out loud.

I understand that you don't want to have a lot of people around you now, I would be the same way. So, I will just pray for you
and your SO, that the treatment is easily tolerable and quick and that you have a 100% recovery. Hugs and more hugs.

Kenny - sorry to hear of your news. FWIW, I'll add in that I too know someone who was dx with prostate cancer. He was informed last summer and was treated and is already better (or in remission?)! I'm not sure if they did the seed implant or another form, but he wasn't given chemotherapy. He remarried this summer!

Mini-lecture - be sure to eat lots of healthy, unprocessed foods!

Kenny big hugs from me. I also want you to know that both my dad and my uncle (his brother) were diagnosed 7 years ago and both had treatment. I am not sure what my uncle did but my dad had surgery and then radiation treatment. He is cancer free since then as is my uncle. According to my friend sho works for the Canadian Cancer Society it has one of the best survual rates at the 10 year mark of all the cancers. Good luck in your journey you have lots of support here.

Thanks guys.
I'm fine.
All doctors agree the four test so far indicate that prostate must be removed.
Now the choice is old fashioned surgery or laparoscopic.
The more I read the more I learn that one is not better than the other.
Plus many sources are written by people with a business interest in one or the other.

Some doctors want more tests to see if it spread now.
Other doctors (including the local top specialist) say those tests about spreading are not needed; they say all of the four tests results we already have mean it has not spread.

Apparently extracting 10 cores from the prostate causes it to inflame enlarge and hemorrhage.
This lasts for weeks.
When they surgically remove it they want a clear unambiguous margin around it and the delicate tissue-like casing around it.
Also the major nerves nearby must be spared to prevent impotence.
If they operated now on the inflamed prostate the chances of being sure they got it all and left the nerves unharmed are lower.
That's why they wait 8 weeks after the biopsy before they operate to remove it.
So I have some time to learn and research.

Psychologically it's disturbing to think this thing is growing inside me.
I want it out today.

I can't interest you in a bout of radiation instead of an operation?

Less risk of impotence :praise:

Age affects the equation.
Most guys with my numbers are much older, so the procedures everyone hears about their fathers and grandfathers getting may not be appropriate for me.
Since all the test indicate with near-certainty it has not escaped the organ removing it now offers the best odds for remaining cancer-free 25 years later.
Most guys with my scores are not expected to be posting on Pricescope 25 years after diagnosis.

I need to read more but at this point that's my understanding of why NO doctor so far has recommended radiation instead of removing the organ.
Some doctors have mentioned a little radiation as an additional precaution AFTER removing the organ though.

kenny, radiation would affect your entire body and its systems. i'm glad this was not presented as an option.

surgery re old fashioned or lapriscopic is going to be invasive but will at least keep the rest of your body and its systems available to provide assistance in your post-operative healing.

i hope you are keeping a log of everything you've read and your thoughts: i think you should publish your first person account. you bring to your personal health issue the same thoroughness and thoughtfulness as you do to FCD collecting.

The wait after the biopsy is so long, isn't it? I recall how surprised we were to learn about the wait. But, the biopsy is very invasive, so a full recovery is necessary before actual surgery. My husband had 13 cores; 12 was standard procedure at the teaching hospital he used, but one messed up and had to be done over. He was content to stop at unlucky 13, although he was jokingly asked if he wanted to make it 14!

Hi Kenny -
My dad had he choice of the laporoscopic surgery or the old fasioned kind and he chose the old fashioned kind (I think it was because he liked the dr. better). As far as the radiation went I seem to recall there were two options, the standard kind and the one where they implant radioactive pellets in the scrotum. Apparently there are issues with the latter, it shows up on screening at the airport and if there are ny kids in your life that might sit on your lap you will be a radiation hazard to them.

I really wish you all the best and am sending good thoughts.

Two days for me.
My biopsy was Tuesday morning and my doctor had the pathology report Thursday afternoon.

This is a stab in the dark based on knowing several people who have had breast cancer - with their types of cancer it came down to the either the chance of it reoccurring or the extent to which the breast was diseased. Could it be that you are too far along to confidently treat it with only radiation?

I did not make myself clear. I meant the wait between the biopsy and surgery is long, isn't it? I think DH had his biopsy in early January, but the surgery was not until March 31, because of the wait that is required between the biopsy and the surgery. For us, the waiting was worse than the recovery from the surgery; you just want the cancer out, only to learn that nothing is going to happen for months.

Kenny, I haven't been around here very much in recent months, but Amanda tagged the photo I took of you at the LA Pricescope GTG today and I wanted to stop by and extend my prayers and good thoughts your way. You're a fighter, and you're going to knock this thing out; I just know it! I will be sure to reach out the next time I plan to be in SoCal, because I need another photo shoot of yours, mine, the Octavia, and Amanda's rings all together! HUGS!!!!!!

Kenny, I am also late to this thread, but just wanted to add my well wishes to you for a speedy and complete recovery from your upcoming surgery.

DH and I (and our two dogs) just moved across the US (I know, what a lame excuse to be MIA) so I haven't had much time to even lurk, let alone post, but I did want to take the time to let you know that you are in my thoughts and that I'll be looking forward to many pictures of that new FCD that I know you will be buying for yourself in celebration, when you've gotten this thing beat! All the best to you!
