Excuse the double-post, but I did not get a reply on Rocky talky.

I am in love with halo pave settings and have recently noticed that stones sitting within halos tend to look more yellow. Have you noticed this either on your own ring or in rings you considered? over the weekend, I saw a few rings where the stones were near colorless, but up against the pave, they looked like they had a lot of color (in a bad way!). My second question is whether I need to make sure to get a colorless stone. I''m wondering if the particular rings I saw were the rule or maybe it was an anomaly!

Were the stones you saw certed by GIA or AGS? If not, that "G" stone might really be an I or even a J or K depending on who DID certify it.

Mine looks really, really white. I''ve never had that problem.

What color is your center stone? I''m trying to figure out how "low" I could/should go.

Thanks!

Mine is a G and it looks very white (photos here)

The jeweler should match the side stones to be the same coloring as the center. That will also help ensure that it doesn''t appear a different color from the rest. That could be why the stones you''ve seen look yellower in the halo settings.

what shape center stones were you looking at? you can go lower in ideal cut rounds than other shapes. i have a G cushion and there isn''t a color difference b/t the stone and halo.

I have a J and I believe the halo is made with G color stones?...not 100% on that. I cannot see a color difference in some light at all and I can in other lighting.

there are some pics of mine in this thread if you want to see.

It just struck me that I had never noticed the color difference before looking at this specific store. I guess the problem could have been that the jeweler did not make an effort to match the stones.

So...what typically happens if you buy a setting at one place and a stone at another? How do you get a good match? For example, if I were to purchase a setting for an E stone, would I ask for E paves in my halo?

Thanks for all of your help! I was getting REALLY worried because those rings looked pretty bad!

Oh, I forgot to say thank you for the links, Newbie and Gummybear! Your rings are unbelievable- I''m drooling!

You''re right- your center stones don''t look colored AT ALL. Just gorgeous!

I have a G-coloured halo and centre stone
and the difference is most noticeable
with fake light. Given that body colour
is more evident with diamond size it might
be wise to assume that the ratio of
centre to halo determines the final look.

With a 1.3C round in a halo of .006ers
(tiny Ritani melée) I''d use an F minimum
(now

) Although at this kind of
size any larger diamond would look pretty
dark I think.

Anyway, that''s my 0.02

Still waiting to receive my ring, but I have an F colored oval center stone with E/F colored round pave. They match perfectly! However, when my b/f and I were looking at stones I could tell the differences between the center stone and pave when we looked at G or H colored center stones.

Hope that helps!

My stone and setting were purchased separately, and the setting was custom-made to our design. The jeweler who created the setting specifically chose diamonds to match the center stone. I guess, though, I'm not sure what you would do if you bought an existing setting. Maybe they could just make the same design but with different colored stones to match your center?

Oh, and thanks for the compliment! :) Yeah, I was initially set on not going any lower than F, but when we were shopping around, I realized that I really couldn't tell the difference between G and higher (although I can easily spot H color). I think it makes a big difference, too, that we were most picky about getting a well-cut stone, so really all you notice are the sparkles :)

My center stone is an E and the pave stones in the halo are G/H. I can''t tell a difference at all, and I''m fairly color sensitive. :)

My fiance bought the setting and the stone separately, but just made sure to get a center stone of the same or better color than the setting.

I am so glad I asked- it never dawned on me to match the halo to the center stone.

So, do stock settings (I have my eye on a Ritani!), change in price depending on the color of the pave? I always thought that they fixed the price, but maybe I was mistaken.

there may be a small price difference for higher melee. I''d call a ritani retailer like Pearlmans or Goodoldgold and ask to be sure.

My centre stone is an H and the side stones and halo are G''s. Mine appears to me to be exceptionally white - so I guess it does all depend on the colour of stone that is used.

You just have to be careful to check out what the color is on the melee diamonds. My center stone is I and the pave is H/I. So it matches.

HI:

I have a J colored ACA set in the WF halo/pendant and I can definately tell the color difference between it and the surrounding melee. The stone is warm--I wore it yesterday for the first time in a while, and it was the first thing I noticed. Sparkly tho

and quite pretty!

cheers--Sharon

I have a well cut J stone with F-G pave surrounding and it looks VERY white. It's only in certain lighting that I can detect any warmth and honestly I'm not sure if it's the stone, or something else reflected in it. Other people have commented on how white the stone is and one girl couldn't believe it when I told her it was a J.

Reputable jewelers will always try to stay within one color grade for either halo stones or side stones. Having said that.....
since i''m such a pain in the posterior maximus when it comes to creating special pieces, I''d prefer my entire ring to match color wise.

i recently had my stone set into a halo setting. i love it. i haven''t noticed the stone looking yellower or anything of that sort. the stones on the setting were matched color wise, and go very well together. the only thing i was concerned about was losing the center stone in the halo setting, as in the focus would be taken away....but i don''t feel that happened either.

I had my F asscher in an Xprong for years and had it reset into a halo recently. My melee are angled 20 degees out from the center, and my stone is prong set. My center looks brighter and whiter by far in this setting. I was concerned that if I bezel set my diamond I would cut down the light return and make the stone look darker, so I went with a prong set halo. I made the right choice. My melee are single cut F-G. They look really white as well. All of them match well. Ocean spent a ton of time matching my melee though.
