How to reset my original e-ring sapphire?

Such agreement from a chorus with such exquisite taste! :kiss2: :kiss2: These are all my favourite colors combined in a single piece. And I’ve been wanting a rhr that is low set and protective of the stones so I don’t have to worry and this fits the bill. It would be nice to wear my engagement sapphire again! It’s been at least 15 years.

Unfortunately it will be a bit of a wait as my bling budget recovers, but this may be the next item I set!

Now I want something with that color combo. Best I have is this... periwinkle sapphire and purplish-pink spinel. I want to do a toi et moi eventually.

@Dreamer_D You keep saying your engagement sapphire is low quality, yet every time you post it it looks wonderfully velvety and regal. I say, just make it into a ring and start wearing it again.

You are preaching to the choir, who also have to time the bling projects! We can wait!!

You know much more about sapphires and their many personalities than I do! When I took it to be removed from its old setting a few years ago the jewler examine it and said “you know this is a poor quality sapphire, right?” I suppose that plus my initial dissatisfaction when I received it so many years ago (smaller than I imagined) has colored my feelings.

I am still learning about gems and how they behave in different lighting. My longer relationship is with diamond which are very different beasties. In some lighting the purple and blue sapphires go quite dark and it’s not my favourite.

I wish I had a local jeweler I could really trust. It would be so much more economical. But I am very very particular (aka perfectionistic) about my settings. And metal prices and the Canada-IS exchange rate and tariffs are getting in my way darn it! I shall be patient.

Scrumptious! The pastels look perfect together. Very tone-on-tone which is very soothing. My suite has more contrast which is a little more energetic. I like both looks very much. I don’t have any pastel gems yet though… maybe that says something about what I am attracted to. Hmm.

In my interior design and fashion I love lots of pattern and color so I am very drawn to colored gem designs that combine many different colors. It’s invigorating to the senses!

I like that your colors are more saturated... it works well here!

Boooo that jeweller! Why the need to rain on the client's parade, especially concerning a stone loaded with sentimental value? Besides, what's so wrong with it to begin with? It has the colour, and everything else is minor compared to that.

The fickle nature of corundum is inescapable like that. Try the combo in sunlight and see whether that offsets the disappointment. :P2

I don't think I've ever met a (local) jeweler who has nice things to say about one's own pieces. If they didn't sell it to you, it's junk.

If you do meet one, embrace them! Mine is lovely about my pieces.

I'm glad you have a kind local jeweler! Don't let him/her go. It also doesn't hurt that you have really nice pieces. But I remember the first diamond pendant I bought (ok, I was like 20 y/o, so forgive me). It was 75 points, but like J color and I2 clarity. lol I took it in to be shortened, and the guy literally threw it across the counter at me. "This is garbage." :lol-2: I was like, "well does that preclude the chain from being shortened?"

Lordy I also have not had too many times when they offered even a tiny compliment lol Today to visit the jeweler I wore all my best pieces which I know for a fact are nicer than anything you ever see out and about in this city lol And she was like “it’s nice to see you wearing so many pieces!” Which is the “oh you got a haircut” of comments to make about someone’s jewels!

One good thing I’ll say about my diamonds is they are not fickle at all! They always look great in any lighting. I am opening my mind to moodiness though. And there are other delights. When the sun hits just right as you said :kiss2:

How these people stay in business?? It’s so weird.

Right? I mean, I certainly didn't go back lol And you never know... someone with a smaller budget and not much discernment could turn into a GIA grad with a larger budget one day. They think they're being cool by criticizing, but it's really not very smart from a business perspective.

P.S. I sold that diamond pendant/necklace for more than I paid. So take that, mr. jerkface jeweler!

Well, exactly.

I have to say, my ‘local,’ as I call her, is a woman and a first generation jeweler/bench/owner. She travels to Antwerp once a year to buy her diamond stock and is a dear person. I don’t think she is the norm.

The culture in my local is to be treasured, then. I went in today to get a ring I bought for my DD sized, and the owner wasn’t there. The senior staff who was, asked me what I was wearing, and then called over the new staff to see if they could figure out the stones. They guessed the green/blue sapphire right, but missed the chrysoberyl.

Well your pieces are in a different league than mine! Maybe I just need much much larger colored gems!

lol! Actually no, they are not large—I wish! I have man hands so I could handle big rocks. I just show passion and love for jewelry and gems, and this place is not about taking advantage of people. I’m lucky, I know, but these places do exist. She is first generation.

Lots of folks in the trade are ‘generational,’ meaning it’s a business they learned from their family. Yvonne Railey and Grace of Jewels by Grace are also ‘first generation,’ and have wonderful attitudes and transparency. Read Yvonne’s blog. My mother bought a couple of pieces from Grace and almost a year later a gem fell out of an emerald bracelet. My local looked at it and told me the emeralds were glued in. Grace accepted the problem without pushback, apologized, took it back, and refunded my mother. I don’t think she knew. Very different experience from the estate dealer in Dallas, whose mother started the business, sold me a ring as Burmese sapphires and refused to believe AGL’s origin of Madagascar. Had to charge back my credit card to get his attention.

Obviously, my experiences are just that, not a research project. But it is what I have noticed through the years.

I have worked with Yvonne and had many great conversations with her. And I’ve worked with Grace. I agree completely that they are wonderful to work with!

Just echoing that every time I see photos of your sapphire I think it's lovely. Not crystalline, sure, but rich and velvety and regal. I love the current arrangement, I think it will be a nice fit with your other pieces and my understanding of your wardrobe.

Of course I'm biased but I think I have some nice jewelry even if my pieces aren't the biggest stones or most expensive jewelry ever. I have never gotten a compliment on anything from a jeweler, at best it's neutral. Maybe the engagement ring old mine will be different, but I'm also expecting someone to comment that it has some warmth and is asymmetrical so who knows!

Your double pear ring is one of my very favorites here on PS...

Aww you're sweet! I really wanted to do something vertical like that, but I'm not coming up with anything I like.

When I think of vertical rings, I think of Ivy New York. I'm sure you've come across these but just in case:

I tried this super fun one on at Lang:

Smaller scale but I still think about this Alexandrite ring:
