Here is a link to a table with murders in Chicago from 1957 through 2015. Rahm was elected in 2011. The murders from 2011 through 2015 (where the data ends) are in the lower third numerically over the past six decades.

It's the south side BTW, not the east side. If you're on the east side of Chicago you're wet. Any murders taking place in the east side of Chicago would involve drowning.

You will note that more murders tend to take place in the summer months. Would you would like to blame Rahm and/or Obama for the fact that it's hot here in the summer? Or perhaps that's somehow linked to Hillary's emails...

Chicago is Chicago no matter how you spin it and it is up to the Mayor (Dem. or Rep) to keep the city safe from crimes. My chances of getting shot in Chi. is greater than the war zones in the middle east.

So apparently other places in the world that have better gun control laws don't have street gangs, gangs in general and drug problems. Last time I checked we have all of those things, societies like ours and the UK just make it harder for EVERYONE that shouldn't have a gun including the criminals to walk around with them.

If you spent a fraction of the money that is currently being spent on the armarda of warships currently in my part of the world sitting off the coastline of Korea, on better gun control laws we might all happily be able to get on with it....

And while I am on the subject you might actually train some of your new young police officers better as well like when an overly zealous US police officer shot and killed an unarmed Australian woman in her pyjamas when she had heard what she thought was a domestic going on outside her house and called them there in the first place...

But your country does not already have millions of illegal guns flowing around in the hands of felons like we have here in the U.S.

I think most Americans are in fav of stronger gun control laws but how can we take the guns away from the bad guys?

Not sure if this will make Iran another North Korea - I've yet to even think that North Korea is going to do anything. Iran has neighbors who don't take kindly to their atomic power and more apt to do something about it.

Why does the US Russia and the other nuclear powers get to have nuclear weapons and not other countries?

Spend less money on war games provoking North Korea and more money on better policing, more police and better incarceration systems. And introduce tighter gun control laws. I don't know how many times I have to say it, it's not about removing guns from decent people, it's about cutting back certain guns and making it harder for people who shouldn't have them to actually walk around with them.

@arkieb1 I've lived in the NW suburbs of Chicago for over 30 years. Illinois is a blue state, Chicago has been run by Democrats for DECADES. Illinois HAS gun laws. Why wouldn't Obama have done more about the gang shootings in Chicago? Why do you think that is? Do you think gun laws matter to the gang bangers who have no shortage of guns? It's not as simplistic as you think.

Where does the money come from for "better policing, more police and better incarceration systems?" Pretty over simplistic to say "Just throw them all in jail!." Illinois is on the brink of bankruptcy. Let me know when you have the answer to Chicago politics.

Bonfire, another factor is that even if Chicago/Illinois changed the laws (which, as you aptly point out, are irrelevant to those that don't give a rat's a$$ about the laws to begin with) there is an ample supply to be had just over the Indiana border.

MY proposed idea is that anyone found in possession of a gun FOR ANY REASON WHATSOEVER, I don't care if it's grandma carrying a gun in her purse to church and back because the streets are dangerous, then they get a MANDATORY 10 year prison sentence. No time off for good behavior. End of story. And I'm not talking about tying the gut possession to any other crime (in the instances where one has been committed) or anything else. Possession = 10 years in the slammer. PERIOD. In my utopia BTW, a license to carry a gun is irrelevant because there would be NO licenses. And if you carried a gun for you job, like police officers, you would have to leave that gun at your place of employment when you went home for the day. Sign it into the weapons cache at the end of your shift and sign it back out when you come to work next.

Whew.

Utopian rant over.

I have strong feelings about all this in general, but having spent the day down at 26th and California yesterday for jury duty I am even more in a snit about the gun thing. I worked down there when I was in law school -- night narcotics court. We would start at 4 pm and go until the cases were all cleared off the docket. Now THAT was a life experience...
