Hope the President does a good job for USA

North Korea issued a statement saying "Sound dialogue is not possible with such a guy bereft of reason and only absolute force can work on him".

So all of you who constantly say Trump didn't mean what he said, are you beginning to see Trumps words have consequences. SMDH. :angryfire::angryfire::angryfire:

And when someone as absolutely off the rails as Kim Jong-Us is saying you are bereft of reason...

I have been here for 14 yrs. and nothing have changed...

Rule#1... you must agree with all the far left policies or else the liberals here will label you as dumb, ignorant and stupid.

:lol-2::lol-2::lol-2::lol-2::lol-2::lol-2::lol-2: this is the funniest thing I've read all day! You think not agreeing with "far left liberals" is the reason????

Thanks for the laugh!

Just when it looked like China was coming around finally. Their sanctions are what really would make the difference in the pocketbook of N.K. I like the idea of drugging Trump and locking him in a closet...without his phone of course!

We have sunk unbelievably low I honestly am beginning to wonder if the divide is so wide that we will never begin to repair this country.

Do not lose track of history.

Is this a potential Constitutional crisis? Yes. And a Constitutional crisis is serious. If the Executive Branch were to be able to overcome the Legislative and Judicial Branches, perhaps with the backing of the military, it would be unprecedented and the end of democracy in the United States. And I agree that this situation has the potential to become that (although I believe the reality of it becoming that is extraordinarily slim).

Unless The Executive Branch were to upset the Constitutionally guaranteed separation of powers, however, I do not think we are even close to the division that this country his seen (and recovered from) in the past.

In the 1960's this country was deeply divided about race and then about the war in Vietnam. Black and white people were fighting in the South. Black people and those who stood with them were were being beaten and killed. The regulars who supported ROTC (The Reserve Officer Training Corps) on campuses hated the counter-culture "hippies" who had influenced the dress, musical taste, and superficial opinions, of most of the students on college campuses. Protestors chanted at returning soldiers, asking them how many babies they had killed that day and spitting on them. Videos of women and children in Vietnam being burned up by US napalm were shown on evening television. Marches and demonstrations were in the hundreds of thousands. And that was the easy time.

Then there was The Civil War.

We can heal. But we have to manage not to let the president take power away from the other branches of government.

What should Trump do with N. Korea?

The only thing he can do: leave it alone.

India and Pakistan developed nuclear weapons. No one wanted them to obtain them, either. But what's done is done.

Now Trump should give up his idea of dismantling the government, which was idiotic, and get rid of Bannon, who was encouraging him with it. He should stop trying to dismantle The State Department, which was one of his goals, and replace all the missing high level members of The State Department he wanted to get rid of in order to effect that goal. He should also appoint an Ambassador to South Korea, preferably a competent one, not someone who was in the oil business like Rex Tillerson. Let him get someone who was a career diplomat. Then he should start listening to people who know things. (That means turning a deaf ear to Jared, Ivanka, and anyone else he brought into The White House with him from his campaign.)

What should trump do about N. Korea? Trump should stay the frick off of twitter when it comes to Korea!

I truly believe that he is escalating this situation so that he can distract from the Russia investigation.

Before anyone asks, I do believe he would sink that low.

I just read that Trump ramped up the rhetoric again . He told a reporter at his golf course that maybe his "Fire and Fury" comment may not have gone far enough. He said "if anything, maybe that comment wasn't tough enough."

Will someone please take the phone away from Trump, drug him and put him in closet until this crisis is over.

@AGBF

Thanks Deb, I know everything you wrote is true. I just can't believe there are people who still think this moron is good for our country.

It's all funny until someone drops a nuclear bomb.

I thought I had seen it all. Today the president of the United States THANKED Russia for putting 755 Americans out of work. He said russia did a good thing by helping him reduce the payroll.
russia responded to congresses sanctions by kicking out 755 people AND trump literally thanks putin.

"I want to thank him because we're trying to cut down on payroll."

That was absolutely insane and should remove any doubt that Putin's holding something over him.

And throw Un in there with him then they both can fight it out inside the closet.

You mean a diplomat like J. Kerry who gave away the house to the Irainans?

Dancing Fire, Your joking right???? You know Biden would win hands down. Aren't you disgusted with Trumps game of chicken?

Yes, Biden will beat Trump easily...;)2.

As for the game of chicken?...Kennedy won in 1962 over Khrushchev.

Yes Callie you are right. Yet we have republicans pushing through ANOTHER look for Clinton emails on Benghazi.. so unbelievably pathetic.

So do we go to war? I don't think Trump will back down so we have to think that Kim Jong Un(?) will choke, he has a lot more to lose. Will China stand with us or with N Korea? Haven't heard much from the Russians...

I believe his followers can see no wrong, they can forgive him anything because he is 'strong', he is decisive, he 'cares', strong can equal death of young Americans, decisive shows me that he is does not one to weigh all options and he cares? show me how he cares, I don't see it.

Sad days.

We have sunk unbelievably low @Tekate. I honestly am beginning to wonder if the divide is so wide that we will never begin to repair this country. Even here some of the republicans are still trying to make it seem as though Trump isn't so bad. Can you imagine if a democrat president acted the way Trump has this week? Don't even get me started on every other week leading up to this week. Trump has no moral compass. He has treated people terribly and showed the world who he is for years. When he made the remark that he could shot someone in Times Square and still get elected why could his base not see he was calling them stupid.

Alienating the rest of the world is the wrong way to go about having peace.
The republicans better wake up and fix this mess they created.

You mean a diplomat like J. Kerry who gave away the house to the Irainans?

You are confused. John Kerry was not a career diplomat. He had been a United States Senator prior to being made Secretary of State, which is considered the highest or the second highest cabinet post. The Secretary of State carries out a president's foreign policy (except in the case of Trump and Tillerson, of course). The Secretary of State also advises the president on foreign affairs because he or she has met extensively with world leaders. John Kerry, having had enormous foreign policy experience as well as legislative experience in The United States Senate, was quite qualified for the position he held. I do not think someone would need to be of his stature to be the Ambassador to South Korea, but I do not think it should be a purely political appointment.

I don't see it either @Tekate

Trump and his rhetoric are backing us into a corner. I felt sick watching CNN tonight. It will be catastrophic if we go to war and yet Trump does nothing to try to defuse the situation. The general they interviewed, James Clapper and Defense Secretary Mattis all seem worried that this will spiral out of control.

This just gets more depressing by the day.

It's not Trump being backed into a corner that worries me; it's Kim. This is a guy who poisoned his half-brother and machine-gunned his uncle in half to keep power -- if he sees no other way out that would allow him to save face and Trump keeps goading him (he's as thin-skinned as Trump), I can see him launching missiles.

The second he does that and the US launches the anti-missile system, we're at war. If we're lucky, Kim would not be able to get other missiles off...otherwise a lot of people will die.

I think China will enter North Korea as soon as aggression starts to prevent a fully integrated Korea, maintain a buffer between them and the US military currently in South Korea, and stop N. Koreans crossing. It's actually interesting that China hasn't moved troops to the border yet (someone correct me if I'm wrong). The last time tension escalated between North and South Korea, China supposedly moved 150K soldiers there, which may have helped with Kim backing down.

I am hoping/thinking that on our side, there are checks and balances to prevent pre-emptive attacks that may start another (nuclear) war. On the North Korea side, I have no idea if there are those checks and balances. In fact everything we know, suggests it is a tolatarian state where Il Jung does not tolerate dissent and remove potential opposition. And as far as having more to lose, he doesn't seem to have a high regard/caring for his people, judging by hearing they are starving. The problem is, his missles and their targets are most likely closer (Seoul, Australia). The missles can't reach the US, but goading him into attacking could kill countless other people. Trump's words and actions are deliberately endangering our allies, with nuclear bombs! Do you see why the rest of the world dislikes Trump?

@t-c I was also wondering why China wasn't doing more. After watching CNN last night it seemed as though those around Trump and the commentators on the show get how serious this is. Very expert feels he is handling this incorrectly and yet no one can stop him. It's no surprise that that he is dealing with a lunatic and yet he continues to antagonize. It was also mentioned that Trump has said in the past that we would NOT announce what we are going to. He is announcing exactly what we are going to do. Every expert has said he should not be saying a word. He has lowered himself to Kim's level and it's ridiculous. Trump seems to be playing to his base. They act as though we are the only people in the world. In their mind we need no one so why would they care what happens to other countries.

@Part Gypsy mentioned checks and balances would prevent another world war. I would have thought something would have been done to keep Trump in line with everything that is at stake and everyday we see him flaming the fires more. If this ends up being a war I also wonder how other countries will view our part in it. If our experts here feel Trumps actions in handling this are wrong I seriously doubt other countries would view it any differently. Trump has done so much damage to how we are viewed around the world already.

Kim keeps saying he will attack Guam. He knows if he starts this it will be their demise. What would prevent him from trying to hit the US? At that point he has absolutely nothing to lose so why would he not do everything in his power to strike us where it would hurt us the most. In his sick twisted mind that would be going out in a blaze of glory.

I am enjoying the thoughtful discussion above very much, although I am not participating in it. (I mean the nuts and bolts of how nuclear war might start.) I did want to say one thing, however. I am unsure that partgypsy is correct that the separation of powers would save us from having the president order a nuclear strike. In theory he is constrained both by the The Constitution (Congress, not the President has the power to declare war) and The War Powers Act. It is he who has the actual power to launch a strike, however. Only he carries "the football". In actuality he can launch a strike whenever he wants.

Hi, Callie! I was writing while your posting came up, so I didn't see it until I was finished writing. Carry on with your great discussion, ladies!

Major hugs all around to all of you!
Deb

I just turned on CNN and their correspondent in China said China has indicated that if North Korea and the US get into war, China will remain neutral.

@ t-c I just read on another forum that China will remain neutral if North Korea acts first. If US strikes first they will intervene.

Hi Deb, I need to turn off the news. Too many other sad things going on in my life and worrying about this isn't helping anything.

It sure does sum this situation up @Bonfire
