Hi everyone,

My clueless male friend is hoping to propose to his girl this year. She has indicated she wants;
- pear cut
-rose gold
- vintage
- halo

Comfortable budget it 7-8k aud including setting but he could push to 10 and would prefer to spend 5. She is apparently not fussy and I don’t personally know her so it’s tough! He has been to two local jewellers and they have only given him a quote for the completed ring for 8k with a random 0.8 GIA Certified stone. He doesn’t know anything more about the stone - I think they will fill the order with whatever they can with matching specs. I told him to hold up!

I have been searching online vendors. What do you think of these? I have no idea about pears, only what my eyes tell me looks nice I can see him being railroaded by the salespeople ... so I offered to help in what way I can.

1. There is something about this one I find really appealing

2.

3. I read that the fat end should look as much like a rb as possible?

4. This one has a bit of a bow tie but it is still striking

Thanks

The last one would be my favorite.

First one is a J and may show to much tint in the pointed end. Does look pretty bright and sparkly though. You could order and return if too tinted.
Second ones shape is awful.
Third one is ok but would like to see less much.
Good chance not eye clean for younger eyes.
Fith stone - nice shape, nice ratio, no visible inclusions...less mush is always a benefit.

I'll go take a look at JA (and other sites when I get back).

1. has strong faceting in the bow-tie area but might be a little 'mushy' at the pointy end. Colour seems quite strong at each end. Doesn't seem to window much, which is good!

2. Seems very mushy at the pointy end, and somewhat at the fat end - I'm personally not keen overall.

3. As tyty says, a touch mushy, but good faceting across the stone IMO.

4. Mushy at each end and if that inclusion is as black in real life as it is in the video, definitely not eye-clean.

5. Similar to 3 but windows when the pointy end is rotated to between about 9pm and 11pm on the video.

So, for me, it would be 3. (All comments in my uneducated, inexperienced-in-real-life opinion, obviously!)

As another option, this is a beautifully-shaped pear with a dynamic performance from BN, just under $3K - BN Stock Number LD07597066 - https://www.bluenile.com/diamond-de...AMONDS&track=viewDiamondDetails&action=newTab

and then since she wants Rose Gold and vintage, maybe pair it with this David Klass halo - https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/my-beautiful-garnet-engagement-ring.242472/

I think it would be an amazing ER with great finger presence along with being well-priced for their budget.

LOVING that pear!

Nice find - the video setup is different so it's hard to compare to JA videos, but looks good!

Hi everyone!

Wow such great options- they really are a step up from JA. Those were the best I could find but honestly none of them were doing it for me.

I am in love with the chubby D from DbL. I’ve not paid much attention to fancy shapes before but this one is killer! I also showed him the haloes she makes.

The BN stone looks great, but as you say it’s difficult to compare due to the different lighting environment. Do BN make additional videos on request?

I have passed all these suggestions on to my friend. He wants the best deal and quality he can get, as do I for him, but you can only lead a horse to water. Hopefully he drinks!!

I have told him to check with the jewellers here if they will set his own stone in their setting, and at least get a price for the setting alone. Also to get information about the specific stone they are trying to sell him.

Thanks so much everyone! Great effort very helpful!

Price aside I think the BN and chubby 0.82 D vs1 from diamonds by Lauren are my faves.

Assuming he is ok with the price, how do we go about choosing between them without ordering both in if possible? (we are in Australia) do you normally receive a better price if you buy the stone and setting from the same vendor ?

DBL has the diamond in their possession and will be able to answer any questions you have and are exceptional with fancy cuts. BN does not own the stone and it is overseas, so they will be limited in what they can answer. Assuming all else is equal, that would make me lean to DBL their favor for the stone. Add in that DBL can execute a lovely setting, that would put me in their camp. If your friend does buy from them, we can help with the setting design process too. Victor Canera, a custom and hand-forger, does give a discount if you buy a stone and setting -- but he actual has his own line of stones but he does not have pears.

B and M will claim to give you a discount if you buy both, but they tend to be high to begin with, so you are not really getting a deal.

Does GF have a preference as to pear shape? The BN is almost a round with a point, and the DBL pear is very chubby ... the shapes are different enough it would be worthwhile to get GF's input on which she may prefer in a rose gold vintage halo setting. And if she actually favors long, thin pears, then these two candidates need to be tossed out and the search recommenced.

Of the two pear halo semi-mounts on DBL's website, I don't care for either, and neither have a vintage vibe. To my way of thinking, if you're going to go custom, then you may as well go custom with someone who already makes a vintage ring and/or vintage halo very close to GF's dream setting.

By the same token, while BN also has two pear halo settings, both of them are quite modern (and not well-crafted IMO).

Perhaps buy the stone loose, and have Aussie jeweler Alistair Kelsey create the vintage halo ring? He builds beautiful rings and has several with vintage aspects.

Hi there again, I reached out to Alistair and he showed me some examples of his work and it looks great. Yet to give us a quote.

However I am wondering are we better to source our own stone or allow him to do so on our behalf. He has assured me that he will get the best stone possible within budget. Presumably there will be a mark up, but I’ve no idea how much is the standard. Have you had him source stones for you before?

Thanks
