Hello Ladies & Gents – I’ve now decided which diamond to purchase and on to the next step of choosing a setting (Very Excited!) 1.3xct F/VS2 – GIA XXX HCA: 1.6

I’ve been debating for a while if I wanted to go with SK or VC. There are 3 settings I was considering from VC and 1 setting absolutely adore from SK (seen from a fellow pricescope member).

I also do love the Anya but a bit over my budget ;)

Which one would you go for and why?

i prefer the split shank because its more unique. But as for VC or SK, id just pick whichever was cheaper. They will both do stunning work, im sure either would turn out... but sense you have a budget.... id jsut try and stick to whatever is closest to it

agree with Niel

I think the split shank works better on those large stones that are pictured (although I do not know the size of the diamond in the SK picture...do you know?). I'd do a single shank on a 1.3 and have Victor do it. I love the split shanks but would do it on a 2 ct+ stone.

Okay, I found it. The SK diamond pictured above is 2.5 cts. It just isn't going to look the same with a stone that is much smaller. So keep that in mind.

Thanks for all your feedback! Keep it coming.

I do love the split shank and it was my first choice but as diamondseeker has already mentioned my diamond might be too small for it... and the split shank my overpower the center diamond.

But since my finger is a size 3 1/4 - 3 -1/2 it may be OK if the ring is made proportional to my size... mmm

Oh, tiny fingers! But I don't see how they can safely make the shank and split part a whole lot thinner than they are on that one since they are already quite thin. I know they can make the setting for your size diamond, of course. I am just saying it won't have the same effect as it does with these large stones. I feel the same way about a lot of the rings we see on those sites. Another example is a 3 stone with pear sides. I think that looks a lot better with a 2 ct center as well. It just helps if you can see the settings you like with stones close to the same size as yours rather than these huge stones.

These guys are good I'm sure they can do it in a way that is flattering. Your ring is THAT small :wink2:

thanks guys! as always valuable feedback!

I ask my dear man which one he likes best and he likes the VC - Evelyn and the SK - Split Shank aska R0219 the most. he has some good taste!!

I called both Victor and Steven to give their opinion about the doability /design of the split shank.

Victor reakons it maybe be a bit to small and he would recommend the style for a diamond of 2.0ct min

Steven says its fine since my finger is small and it would look nice

I have worked with VC and SK on some custome pieces. If SK says he can do it then the can do it. He did my 3 stone ring and I was so nervous for how it would turn out because I had a lot going on with it. At the end of the day it is beautiful and I'm so thrilled with it. FWIW I also voted the split shank because after a halo that is my favorite look. I agree that because of your tiny finger size it can be pulled off with a center stone that you have. So if the split shank is what you are leaning towards I would definitely do that.

Well, there is no doubt that it can be done, but if Victor says the design works better on a 2+ct stone, then I would listen to that. But I would also choose Victor since I have worked with him before, so I trust his judgement completely.

I would just say that if you decide to go with Steven, have him show you some pictures of that setting made with diamonds your size or less so you can judge a little better how it would look. I am sure it would be beautiful, but whether it has the same impact that it does on a larger stone, you'd have to decide.

If Steven made that ring with smaller diamonds I highly doubt he will have it for a size 3 finger, which is really the key point here.

Honestly OP because your fingers are so tiny (I'm jealous) your 1.3ct is going to look HUGE on your finger so I really think this setting could work for you. However, I doubt Steven (or most anyone for that matter) will have many examples to show you because your finger size is so tiny.

Can't wait to see whta you decide on!

That is definitely true, Sarah! I was thinking more of the split shank part, though, because it is more visible and pronounced on a larger stone. I doubt he can make the whole shank or split shank a lot thinner in proportion to the diamond size, so that was what I was meaning moreso than her ring size. I do think a 1.3 ct diamond is larger than most first engagement rings and a beautiful size on any finger!

I love seeing all the amazing rings that these master ring makers make, but I have to scale it down and imagine that it won't look the same on my own smaller stone!

Steven has sent me some photos of one of his recent works who is a size 3, split setting but the diamond is a bit bigger than mine 1.5 ct :(. Hopefully i can still get the same effect.

I do love the split shank and the halo! my Fi said that if I'm good, he will buy me a VC halo someday lol.

I would do a split shank and have Steven do it because of his metal work and familiarity with the design. I wear my ring on a daily basis and it is absolutely not falling apart on me at all. While it was done by Leon, I fully believe that a ring like this made by Steven will be just as strong. Honestly, my ring is just not going to fall apart on me - it is really sturdy. I had many other jewelers request to look at my ring and all are blown away around what a well built ring it is. The split is under 1 mm and the joint area is 1.5 mm so it is a very dainty ring but works fine for my small fingers especially paired with the band.

Split shank on a small finger is not an issue. My ring is a 2 5/8 and the split worked out just fine. My stone is 1.7 ct for reference. I also have a similar split shank with a 6.5 mm stone and it looks beautiful.

I would have zero concerns with Steven making this ring. I know he can make tiny rings as he has made a few rings for me and resized a whack of rings for me. I have also seen crazy work by him where he can fit pave into the tiniest spaces and the metal work is just wow. The photos he has up just simply doesn't compare to what I have seen in real life over the years. I am not just praising him because I have stuff from him - I am geniunely impressed by what I have seen and I don't get impressed easy for settings. For this design, I would go to Steven or even Leon if you want to go that route. I find their metal work is superior and that is really important for this design.

If you were doing a round halo, I would use Victor Canera since he has perfected the round halo in my opinion.

I'm very close in deciding! I put a deadline this week but I'm definitely leaning towards the split shank as it has more character in my opinion and seeing some examples have put my mind at ease about having a smaller diamond and smaller finger with this type of setting.

I will have to just wait for my halo ;) maybe 5 years time hehe.

they both have a diamond concierge but you can also get your diamond to be delivered at their studio. You just need to let them know which approach you want to take. I bought my diamond from IDJ from Yekutiel, he has been so helpful and responsive. To be fair David from GOG is also very very good and responsive and they can bring a diamond for you to look at without paying upfront like WF ( not sure if this is always the case though :)) Whilst in BG you have to pay for the diamond ( not in house)to be delivered to them to enable them to have a look at it.

All aforementioned diamond vendors are great!! The ladies and gents from this forum will give you amazing advice! They are all very informative :)

I love my VC Alaria, so simple and elegant but the touch of pave around the basket is a sweet surprise :)

Not sure if you've already decided but I love either of the split shanks. The split shanks have a bit more presence than a simple pave band BUT the split shank still makes it all about the centre stone. For me, it's the best of both worlds!

For my 2 VC settings and my 1 by SK I have always shipped my diamonds to them.

They are both the same ring (long story), the Emilya. I first had him make the Emilya for my 2ct MRB. About 10 months later I bought the cushion and while I love both rings I only want 1 ering. Hence I will hopefully sell my first Emilya setting, reset the 2ct into something else and Venice (nickname for my cushion) in her new emilya home will be my forever and every setting.

It took me a long time to find my dream ring....

Have decided to go with the Split Shank!!!! YAY!

I'm going to go with VC for a cushion halo at some point :)

Can't wait to see it! You really couldn't go wrong with these choices!

Great choice! I looked all of those too. The Colette could be could gorgeous with a colorful gem down the road....I want to invite you to the "If you're waiting for your custom design to come in..." thread. :wavey:

Diamondseeke- cannot wait to start posting pictures!

Thanks backwardsandinheels! I'm still waiting for my work order to come through!!!!!!! I'm so impatient :(

Kathness- glad to hear you are going with Steven. I am MORE than happy with my ring that Steven made. Charmypoo's ring was actually my inspiration (though Leon made her ring- Steven made her band). I communicated with Steven through emails and he always responded promptly. Steven KNOWS what he's doing. I had some questions/decisions about the ring, Steven gave me his opinion,I trusted him and went with his recommendations. No worries. He has an eye for perfection. Cant wait to see your ring!
