Just an update, it definitely is Princess Cut above a round cut :( I liked the round one much better, but its not for me, lol. Sssoooo the search continues. If you guys can shoot me some princess cuts, it would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

did you find out her preferences on color/clarity?

No, i haven't been able to. Whenever I heard her and her friends talk about diamonds, the only C they know is carat, lol.

How is eternity diamonds? I like their policies also, but they don't have a a signature cut or anything like GOG or Whiteflash, but they seem to have a good amount of diamonds there. Here are two that I am looking at:

Ask for an ASET. I would stick to AGS0 princesses though if you want ease.

Well, she is really making this difficult if you also don't know her ring size! I'd ask the friend that, too! It is really sad to receive an engagement ring and immediately have to send it for resizing (but I would do that locally).

Okay, I gotta be honest. Your lady is being a pain. Seriously. You gotta just talk to her. You are putting in a lot of effort. She has specific tastes, you are spending a lot of money, and you can't even get her into a store to get her sized.

You REALLY need to just sit her down and say... LOOK, I want this to be perfect, you are wearing this for the rest of your life. I NEED you to go ring shopping with me for a day. I WANT to see what looks best on your hand in terms of shape and size. That I am buying a ring isn't a surprise. You have SAID you don't like my taste. I will still surprise you with the actual ring, but your best friend isn't being very helpful or responsive and diamond prices are rising EVER DAY. And I can't read your mind.

I'm sorry, but that's what you need to do.

I think the one you found at Whiteflash with the Vatché setting will be beautiful:

I am not seeing too much in your budget/specs right now...I would stick with G and above color if you are unsure.

I'm with Gypsy in that you have to know her ring size. I am so glad you figured out that princess cut was her top choice! I would stick to WhiteFlash, Good Old Gold, and Brian Gavin for the princess. You need pictures of the stones at the very minimum. Those all carry well cut stones. I'd probably consider G-H color for a princess as I think they can show a little more color than an ideal cut round.

I'm not sure if this has been suggested, but if you don't know her ring size couldn't you sneakily "borrow" one of her rings from her jewelry box while she's in the bathroom and take it to a local jeweler so they can determine the ring size? Risky, perhaps, but it's still on option. :naughty:

You could take her for a fun day out trying rings on... Saying to her I know you want to be surprised and a surprise it will be. But I want to see how things look on you, and what fun it will be to see what you love and what makes your heart sing...Then take her to lunch..Make a day of it.

Then you having done that will know if she even likes radiants... She may be more of a Princess cut gal...

Diamonds are like wedding dresses... You don't know till you try them on.

I agree with this post :)

A simple solitaire with a princess will be quite lovely, I'm sure.

Having said that, I feel like you're being set up to fail here, since she's specifically told you she doesn't like your taste yet won't offer any input. The LEAST she can do is give you her size. My DH proposed years ago as a complete surprise to me with a ring that was THREE full sizes too big (plus a stone and setting that wasn't my taste, to boot). I know you've been told differently by her, but I really do advise that you sit down with her and work out the details. You need to know her expectations, but you also need to know her parents expectations. Ultimately you can still make the ring and setting a surprise, but knowing everyone's expectations are met is key here, especially since she's from a different culture!

Also, I often see that posters recommend people digging through jewelry boxes to find rings that will help with sizing. That's what my husband did--but he ended up grabbing a ring I wore on my middle finger on my right hand. Just sayin' ...
