Last week, I found an Edwardian ring with the most unusual square cut center that I have ever seen. It has the make of a carre cut, but the crown faceting of a wonky French cut.

I posted a pic of the stone on RT. No one knew what to call the cut-but there was one consensus -that the faceting was kind of ugly. I bought the ring anyways.

Here’s a close up of the center stone.

It reminds of this artwork by Escher:

Of course, once I had the ring in hand, I knew that I had to keep her. The filigree on this ring is just exquisite. She’s like a little work of art. The ring is conservatively estimated to be 1.60 ctw. And bonus-the center stones are all colorless old cuts!

My romantic theory is that the center square cut was an old family stone that was used to make this “new” ring with the two OECs. I will never know the true history of this ring, but I am grateful to be her current caretaker…

A close up. This OEC is the older one with more of pinwheel center.

p.s.
I haven't named her yet. Is she too small to name? What is the naming protocol? If I could name her, I think her name would be Seraphina.

p.p.s
Yes, I am back on Ban Island again. Let's just call her an early birthday present. Although, my mom loves her, too, so we may share custody.

She is beautiful!

Bathe in that quirky glory knowing there probably isn't another stone cut like that to be found! If only she could talk.......

Thank you Ally-you totally get it! Normally, I dislike asymmetry, but I find this stone so charming...

Beautiful ring!

Love the tulip shapes

So, so lovely and unique!! It's an intricate work of art!!!

Beautiful ♥️
Wear in good health and blingy joy!

I love all the filigree details and the pattern of the gallery not to mention the rarity of colorless old cuts! You got a unicorn for sure!
@Muluver Thank you! You know I don't mind a little tint in old cuts-but I'm not going to say no to these colorless ones :geek2:

Beautiful ring!

Love the tulip shapes

Thank you @Rfisher . The tulips may be my favorite design element of the ring!

@Angie3 thank you for your kind words. The artistry of this ring really made it irresistible.

I think she'd look best with a friend. But I don't have the right ring yet...

We are all just caretakers of these exquisite treasures! Even if we don't know their history we are honoring their makers. May they be kept forever for others to enjoy and provide an enduring account of our artistic traditions.

I’m so glad she is in your hands, where you will cherish her individuality. What a pretty ring! I also love your emerald centered ring. Yay For Amazing Antique Settings and Stones!

…And I just saw your video of the ring…. WOW!

Congratulations!!!❤

So so beautiful @lulu_ma!! Love all of the pretty details on this ring. Gread addition to your collection, and congratulations on JOTW!

So cool. Does its wonkiest catch much fire? Escher is one interpretation. Another is Dali…
Thanks @oncrutchesrightnow . I haven't tested her out that much yet. In bright sun light, the rounds definitely show more scintillation. I will experiment and let you know! And I can totallly see the Dali, too. I just think of Escher as being a bit more rectilineal.
