Does PS cause you to have DSS?

Ha ha, I blame it on PS as well as living in HK and SG. I see lots of large bling where I am, so that's what got me started on this whole upgrade thing as well as wanting other bling in addition to the ering. My original ering was 1ct, then I bought a bunch of other jewellery like studs, bracelets, RHR's etc...nothing significant but it was a real waste of money! :knockout: Abt 10 years ago, I wanted to buy a 2ct D IF princess cut with SBF from a B&M store in HK and DH said to go ahead, luckily I didn't buy it; cuz I'd for sure have overpaid, and a princess D IF with SBF is sooo not my cup of tea now.

Then in 2006, I got my 3.02ct F VS2 just before I found PS. I bought it despite it having an HCA of >2. Mind you, the little thing sparkles like mad, it's sooooo fiery no doubt due to the higher crown. I still think that there are some stones that appeal to your eyes and perform well whatever its HCA score.

After that, being on PS just fuelled my passion and makes it easier to buy larger better quality stones. I found WF and then BGD, JA, LM and then Perry...I got studs, upgrade them a couple of times to go larger and whiter....and am still upgrading them to whiter stones! :wink2: Along wt those studs, I got various rings, more studs, a pendant, a bracelet, and now Holly. I am still lusting after a big honker (either an EC or most likely an antique cushion), a line/ Riviere necklace, pear drops for my studs, as well as a pink sapphire. It seems my thirst is not quenched, despite the promises I've made to myself to save money, lol! :naughty: :wink2: :twirl:

Excuse me but what mean DSS please?

Diamond Shrinking Syndrome.

To DS, no it does not, but it does make me reconsider my previous purchases and settings. The one very big gain for me though, is that I now appreciate my diamonds much more beyond bling. And I'm starting to get my hubby interested in it too :Up_to_something:

Sadly, yes! I love all the beauties on here and I want them all! I came here about a year ago in the summer, lurked then joined in October, as I was searching for ideas and information to take my PR solitaire into a 3 stone. I thought that solitaire was the cat's meow at 1.06 cts, for the longest time! Then, while creating the 3 stone (the inital - veeeerrrrryyyy BAD 3 stone...) I began to lust over all the stones - coloured and diamond - on this site.

It kind of got me into the diamond world in a BAAAAD way! I guess an upgrade is your gateway drug into DSS!!

Now, I'm hoping the OEC I'm picking up on Monday in Las Vegas, will satisfy the DSS I've felt. It just has to --- I have no more money left!

LOL, Enerchi - that's exactly how I felt about Poppy when I first got her. Damn, 10mm has to be big enough because this is eating up YEARS of my jewelry budget.

Has Pricescope caused DSS for me? Yes, probably. It has also exposed me to a variety of cuts, settings, and incredible projects that I would have otherwise been clueless of. PS has both saved me a mint and cost me a mint...but more importantly, it has provided me with a lot of joy.

Very nice comment, Ginger...

"PS has both saved me a mint and cost me a mint...but more importantly, it has provided me with a lot of joy."

I agree! :appl:

I love this thread. It reminds me of why I love Pricescope so much...besides the great recipes, I mean. I love the camaraderie about buying diamonds. We always encourage each other to get what we really want and try to help each other to get the best diamonds that are available to us at the best price. And, yes, we encourage each other to spend money if we have it (although I have seen threads in which posters have warned someone not to buy jewelry when it was clearly financially imprudent for the person to do so).

I think this thread shows how all of us want DS to enjoy a bigger diamond with the right specs for her and not ever be nagged again by DSS!

DS, I believe you have a setting in mind that the stone must fit. What size stone will it hold? How big can you go and still use the setting?

Hugs,
Deb

I don't think it's causes my DSS (so bad, don't even have a ring and I gots the bug!!) but it has definitely gotten me more aware of all the details to look out for. I posted on another forum prior to joining here and there was a jewelry subforum but many of the posters there favored name brands over getting the most for your money. Fun to look at, but in the end I wanna try go maximize my buck. I've always been interested in gemstones since I was a kid so this stuff has always interested me! It just makes sense that at this point in my life I enjoy reading and researching about what I want in my ering and future diamond/colored stone jewelry.

Hey, Deb! :wavey: Thank you!!! Bliss has the same setting I do and she just went from a 2.7 ct. stone to almost 4 carats!!!! Vatche redid the head for her ring which was less expensive than getting a whole new setting. So that is what I would do.

Nope, I'm probably one of the odd ones here who had a larger stone and went smaller. I have never regretted that decision. Here in Atlanta, I rarely see rings as large as mine (not that they don't exist, I just don't see too many of them) and my rings garner quite a bit of attention, which stills makes me uncomfotable. If I moved to NYC or LA, maybe I'd feel DSS, but since we will probably never move to a city larger than Atlanta, I probably won't find out!

However, here's my advice, fwiw. If you can afford a larger stone and think you'll be comfortable wearing it, GO FOR IT!!! I get the sense that you are like many of us here...you are pretty frugal in other aspects of your life and just happen to be a bling ho. :cheeky: :naughty:  So I say that you only live once and if you can rock it, wear it!!

PERFECT!!! I completely agree. If you feel comfortable in a HUGE diamond - go for it! Life is to short... do what makes YOU happy! (and on that note... I just might hit the "add to cart" button on yet another trinket... "life is short" right?? :Up_to_something: )

Nooooo, no huge diamond for me! Thankfully that is not my aim since I wouldn't want to spend that much money! I probably have a very narrow range of what I'd be comfortable wearing in a round. I could go larger in cushions and emerald cuts just because they aren't quite as flashy. I am just thinking of going to something like 1.75 and 7.7mm. But I almost wonder if that is worth the trouble! The other issue is that I need to talk to Jonathan about the AVR's and is that even an option. I am just not sure I'd be wise to choose an I color AVR over a G color H&A for the same amount of money.

DS, I know you're committed to buy from GOG ... but are you committed to an AVR specifically? I know Jon has found some amazing performers that were cut "back in the day" - any chance he could search for a high color true antique with a great cut? They're hard to find, but when you look at rocks like Yenny's, you know the hunt can pay off! And they're usually a bit softer on the pocketbook ....

I don't have a diamond so I don't have DSS. I did a few years ago though, and I became obsessed with upgrading. It was ridiculous and now I look back I feel so stupid. I had a perfectly beautiful diamond but it wasn't good enough for me. So I kept on upgrading to the point where I felt thoroughly miserable (the opposite of how I should have felt surely?) so I sold all my jewellery.

When I first started lurking, it both gave me DSS and made me want to begin collecting almost every shape of diamond! I remember really wanting to upgrade my marquise to a bigger size at first. Then I was infatuated with asschers and crushing on ovals. But more recently, I have become so sure that I need an AVC and an EC. However, other factors besides PS have influenced that--watching videos of AVCs and seeing ECs in real life.

At this point, I don't have DSS and am much more focused on collecting the shapes I love, no matter if they're small, since my ER is under half a carat anyway.

You're brilliant!

Note to self: When you upgrade one day to a three carat, keep the setting that you love (the one that your invisible solitaire of 1.67 carats is now in) save money by having Rupert just remake the head on your current setting!

Maisie, I'm kind of sad to hear this - the other day I was researching the Legato setting and came across your lovely one (I'm not sure which upgrade it was) but it was beautiful and really suited you. Perhaps what we ought to do is try on a variety of sizes of diamonds (or sims might be cheaper) on a trial basis for a while to get a feel for what suits and what we'd feel comfortable wearing. It might (or it might not!) get the constant need to upgrade size out of the system because you've already been there and are free to enjoy what you currently have.

Circe, no, I am not set on anything at this point. I think the biggest deals on old stones have been ebay finds such as fortekitty's and Dreamer's. I think Demelza's ring was also a good find but I am not sure if hers was ebay or not. I just want a great stone whether old or new. I am just hesitant to embark on an antique stone hunt due to the "needle in a haystack" factor. But I am not ruling out anything at this point. I could keep my current diamond if I found a great deal on an antique ring.

I am at my sister's tonight because we have an extended family funeral to go to tomorrow, and she asked me if I had decided whether to change my diamond. She notices my current diamond because it is so bright and sparkly (probably because it is clean!!!). I asked her what she thinks and she said I shouldn't bother unless I go to 2 cts.!!! But she lives in a bigger city than I do and is around bigger bling! So I am still uncertain!!! (Ideally I'd have that last AVR with a color boost!)

Maisie, I appreciate your honesty and I certainly want to be content and not be on an endless search! I do also hope you can find one diamond ring that will give you pleasure!

I did my diamond upgrade about 12 years ago, before PS. Fortunately, the diamond is quite lovely. I did look into upgrading it at one point, and the additional $$$ that it would cost just made me love my current diamond even more.

Now, I focus on getting bigger and better colored stones to satify my need for big bling. :wavey:

That is also a great idea! I have acquired 3 Beaudry settings that I am working on as RHR's, so sometimes I think I should just keep my current e-ring and move on to other things!

It can really become an obsession for sure! I can relate.

I think PS definitely gave me DSS. Prior to PS, I thought a 1 carat round or even a .80 carat round would suffice. And now, having had my 3.48 cushion... for a couple of weeks.. it seems small @_@. I know, shame on me!

However, without PS I wouldn't have found the joy of antique cut diamonds.. and probably would have ended up with some maul jewelry (not that it's bad, but now that I know better, I'd rather get more bang for my buck).

PS has made my jewelry buying budget go through the roof. I don't have DSS, because I have two diamond rings and a ton of colored stone rings, but I change them out depending on the situation. One of the diamonds is for being the young couple with the baby, and the other is an heirloom as well as being rather large. For the majority of social situations anyway!

As far as PS giving me DSS? Nah...But it's really skewed my sense of reality for what's normal!

I don't have DSS at this point, having upgraded from a .50 diamond to a 1ct diamond & adding a 2ct band. I believe I'll be very happy with this as my wedding set for the rest of my life :D Also because of PS I feel as though I made great choices on my pieces & bought top quality items at extremely fair prices. I feel as though knowing about PS is like being a part of a secret sparkly world 8)
I don't have the budget for many of the amazing pieces I see on here but love to admire everyones beautiful jewels.

My next stop in the PS road is either diamond studs or a tsav RHR. Both have to wait until next June or so, maybe as a combined Bday & Mothers Day gift. Then I'll be moving on to a pendant and stackers. Of course something else may catch my eye before then, we shall see :naughty:

I went with a 1.5 center after trying on lots of rings with both smaller and larger center stones and liked the way the 1.5 looked on my finger in the setting I wanted. Yet, I still drool over anything2 carats and above and I do think PS is partly to blame. But once I got my 2 ct diamond huggies I am not so obssessed anymore (for now) thanks to DH who pushed me to really consider the 2ct instead of the 1.5 huggies.

But if it weren't for this forum, I would not not have been able to make the informed decisions about my diamond purchases. So I come here to get my diamond fix and I am over it for a while.

YES. And, now seeing Bliss' upgrade thanks to this thread, I now both have DSS and RE- ring envy! :Up_to_something:

That's because she snuck in the upgrade in her thread. LOL. We're still waiting for the official SMTR thread after her hubby proposes again. (so sweet)

Yes, very recently Phoenix got a 5 ct. stone, Bliss has gotten 4 cts., mom2boys has a three stone ring with a 3 ct. center, and ClassyRock came looking for setting suggestions for her 6 ct.!!! Several others here have antique stones over 3 cts.

I am just thrilled for all of them because they are all so sweet and can pull those off in their worlds! But that is not the DSS I have because my comfort range is much lower than that which I am sure makes my hubby happy! I did not have DSS with my 1.63 and I think my mistake was changing to even a slightly smaller stone. No extended family even knows I switched and I don't tell regular people about things like that! Only PS people understand OCD diamond issues!
