Does PS cause you to have DSS?

I can honestly say "no"! I changed my stone a bunch of times while engaged, and now I'm happy to keep the stones I was married with - it's my one nod to sentimentality since it's something DH feels (bizarrely!) strongly about... I feel like I've got the Basics down so I'm ready to move onto Unique and Unexpected ::)

Well, you know me well enough to know that my primary ailment is SSS - Setting Stagnation Syndrome! 8)

Oh gosh, that IS a killer and many of us suffer from that as well! My problem is settling on ONE! But I will say, I love my Vatche solitaire and really would be happy with that forever. It is my safest bet!

I am hoping you still love your 5 stone..right Yssie???

Oh I still adore my DBL trellis setting ::)

It's not quite DSS - no shrinkage. DVD, maybe? Diamond Variety Disorder.

My original stone is a carat and a half MRB - it's a great size. But then I fell in love with chunky facets and high crowns, and started looking for an old cut.

My 5 year anniversary upgrade is 8.8 mm, which I think is my boundary - same width as my nail bed, which is what looks best and most balanced to my eye. But then I see something like FranFine's EC ... Or Haven's cushion ... Krisydarling's OMB ... And I'm all of a sudden like a kid with Pokemon. Gotta catch 'em all!

I think I have both DSS and DVD!

years ago when the other diamond forum existed (pre PS days); I thought a 1 carat would be perfect. Then it became a 1.5ish carat round. And then a 3 carat cushion. I always thought 3 carat was my max size wise, until I tried on a 5 carat Harry Winston cushion in the micropave halo...that was when all hell broke lose re:size. Now I want a 4 to 5 carat pear or maybe round for my next upgrade. I would love an EC like FranFine's, or a nice chunky OEC! If only dreams come true ;)

I would say PS has raised my standards, and over the years having handled different diamonds of shapes/colors and clarity, I am more picky and more certain of what I like/dislike. Some days I wonder if that is a good thing, since it just means spending more money!

I went from .38 to 1.25 with .40 side stones about 4 years ago. Now I am feeling I could easily rock a 2 ct center stone. Dream on....

Okay, I thought so!!! :appl: I knew you had moved on to new projects!!!

I hear ya Alexiszoe and aprilbaby!!!

my ering is a sapphire and my ideal ring in my mind was a pretty big sapphire. DH made me a gorgeous ring on a limited budget at an expensive vendor. I love it and he put A LOT of thought into it and is very sentimental about it, but I think in some ways I had SapphireSS before PS, and PS surely doesn't help :wink2:

So, I just loved my ering and I *ahem*, "invested" in diamond earrings, a pendant, an eternity ring, a five stone, and an OEC ring. I don't think I would have bought any of those without PS.

Now that I have my OEC ring that I can wear when I am hankering for something bigger and more sparkly though I am pretty content in the ring department and am actually trying to sell my rose gold eternity band...

Now, if DH upgraded my sapphire ering for an anniversary, I would not at all be sad about that:-)

Nothing wrong with two sapphire rings, Bella! Sounds like you have a great collection already, though!

Now that I think of it, no, PS has never given me DSS. PS didn't change my feelings about the size of my original 1ct (was happy with the size, and really would have been happy with smaller, so long as it was knockout). However, it did confirm my unhappiness with its cut quality and performance. Since trading it in for my current diamond, I haven't ever desired larger either. PS does make me lust for different settings, though, and worry if my bezel is taking away some of its beauty (it's an OEC). So, SIS (Setting Infidelity Syndrome)?

Nope, not anymore. Rings and jewelry are fun, but I would much rather spend my money on other things, like house renovations. I'm more than satisfied with my three stone ring.

Well, you are in good company because there are LOTS of setting changes on here! But I kind of have Setting Variety Disorder in that I know what I like, but I just can't narrow it down to one!!!

Not DSS, but have become more indecisive about what I want. Last week I was absolutely certain that a dbty bracelet was IT for next purchase. Then I saw a thread featuring a very fetching milgrain eternity and thought I want that too! And so it goes on....

I've had it but after being on PS for so long, I discovered there is a difference between what looks good on others and what I'd feel comfortable having in real life! My eng ring diamond is now one I'd like to keep forever, even in it's small size, but I'd like a new setting.

Good point, and definitely true for me too, MC! I didn't feel comfortable owning and wearing a larger diamond. I thought I would, but no.

Oh, yes, I had a mega-gorgeous 2.19 AVR here a couple of weeks ago but I knew there was no way I could pull that off!!! ;(

I probably should stick with exactly what I have, but I guess I'll always second guess myself!

No, PS doesn't cause me DSS. It was, though, like my eureka light bulb regarding cut and sparkle - finally there was some one and some place that knew exactly what I had been looking for all those years!

My center stone is larger than I ever thought it would be - that's what upgrades do for you - even if you're only trying to improve on cut quality! I love it though and while I feel very finished with upgrades I've learned to never say never. You never know what might come down the pike although I am certainly not actively looking.

DS, would you consider upgrading to a larger H&A stone for your ering and then consider a lower colored AVC (haloed perhaps?) for a right hand ring? I ask because I know these speciality cuts come with a large premium and at some point all things become cost prohibitive - or at least the cost surpasses what most of us would be comfortable paying. I'm thinking you could get a larger H&A stone vs. an AVR for less money? Seems like that would be correct - maybe not but I just seem to remember that they carry a pretty hefty premium. I'm guessing that until you settle the ering question that the rest of your plans can't move forward. I'm sure you're pretty frustrated at this point and I don't blame you. Just thinking of the alternatives but I certainly wouldn't advocate settling for something you really don't want. I just know you love the H&A stones too.

Definitely yes! I had a so-so quality ring from Tiffany and always wondered why it looked tinted and didn't sparkle much. My husband and I had 0 knowledge and didn't even know about diamond color. After I found PS, I became obsessed. So many members have big beautiful diamonds and I had to buy something well-cut and big! I'm afraid to say that I may be addicted to the website and diamonds now. I'm already planning my next purchase

You really do know me well, MGR, and I always look forward to your thoughts! Yes, I think I could get a H&A stone the size, color, and clarity I want for less than an AVR...plus they are so much more accessible. I could also use this setting that I really do love and just have the head replaced (which I know is possible because Bliss just did it!). Jon said I could keep that I color AVR until the right one came in eventually, but I really thought that if I were to upgrade to something that wasn't the imaginary perfect stone, I'd rather it be a H&A with the right color just in case I ended up keeping it forever! And yes, I have no problem with a lower color stone like an AVC in a halo as an extra ring. But I do have 3 Beaudry RH rings and two are incomplete, so that is one reason I am not sure I want a really ornate antique ring for my e-ring. It could end up being too much, you know?

You were just very smart several years ago to go ahead and get your dream ring and then you never needed to change it! I might have even kept my last diamond had I had it in the right setting. But what is done is done and now I have the opportunity to make a change if I want!

Welcome to Diamonds Anonymous!!! There are many addicts here!

You surely learned well judging from your outstanding new ring!!!!

I wouldn't say that I have DSS (just yet!) but PS has certainly distorted my expectations.

Last weekend my DH and I visited Cartier in Melbourne since Perth doesn't have a store. I was all excited to see some big bling and when I saw the largest ring of around 2 carats all I could think was 'Is that it?!' Ill admit I was a little disappointed.
When we walked out I said to my DH 'I think PS has ruined me... That wasn't nearly as exciting as I had imagined it would be.'

can totally relate!!! I do not want to overspend, either. And I have absolutely no one to discuss it with around here! I am really happy for you that you found an OEC that you love! I think it is a perfect size!

Thanks DS! And I totally understand choosing a carat weight that feels right on the hand and is in your comfort zone. At this stage of the game, comfort is very important lol. A larger stone for me would be 2.5 carats, I know I wouldn't feel comfortable in anything larger. 8 mm really is a great size, and I'm happy with it. I hope something turns up for you soon!

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/9802/ This one seems to be hanging around GOG looking for a lovely new home! I think if you kept your ering classic - your Vatche mounting doesn't get much more classic! - then your RHR's could definitely be more antique. If you use your current mounting, you know the Tiffany band will work as well as others that you might someday want. It's a gorgeous look!

No, I've always been this way. PS just allows me to express myself more freely in a safe environment.

Dearest DS...I just happened to log on and see this thread! Oh can I ever relate! I haven't gone near this topic in the past couple of years because I just cannot afford to! Yes, Pricescope gave me DSS! And it was Pricescope that did it. I didn't even care for diamonds as a young woman. I only liked colored stones and had quite conservative taste. When I first came to on-line diamond fora I was just getting my feet wet about what made diamonds beautiful.

My engagement ring is a gold 18K oval with two 1-point diamonds nesting inside it. I didn't purchase a larger solitaire until I was in my 40's. Cut was definitely not yet king back then and 60/60 was the rule. I bought an E colored VS clarity stone of 1.25 carats for my first solo solitaire and I thought it was absolutely enormous!

To shorten my story, let me say that I later bought a stone of over 2 carats and found it too large to wear as a ring. I had it made into a pendant instead. Now I think I must have been crazy. Although that stone is lovely as a pendant, I want a 3 carat ring. The problem is that I will never be able to afford one with specs I want! (Sound familiar?) And my problem isn't my social group. Not that my own social group is fancy, but in this town where I buy groeries and do my dry cleaning no one would notice a 3 carat ring. Or a 5 carat ring.

Hugs to a sister diamond lover,
Deb

Hugs back to you, Deb!!! You are funny!!! Just reset that 2 ct. stone back into a ring!!! I think I am caring less about what other people think the older I get, but I still do have a comfort range! And I do have particular specs as well.

The 2.19 stone is gone. There was someone else waiting on it so I had to make a quick decision, unfortunately. But I think it was too big for me. I have to make smaller jumps than that! :twirl:

It will cure your DSS for now!

That would definitely cure my DSS!!! I did actually look at that one, too! I am afraid that might be too much of a size jump for me, though! I just need to talk to Jonathan. I didn't talk to him this week because they were sooo swamped after being closed for the hurricane and I had to wait and get the other diamond back to them.

I won't blame it on PS :wink2: I was taught to never place blame on others, and to take full responsibility for my actions.. HEHE!

No, I see a lot of big'uns IRL, so I've always lusted.

I got DSS when i first joined PS and that made me upgrade my ER to the stone that i currently have. I'm not sure whether i would have been happy with my previous, smaller, diamond if i hadn't joined PS. Maybe yes, maybe not. In reality, i think that the PS influence made me take the decision to get the bigger stone that i really thought would look better on my finger, without thinking that i'm unreasonable and crazy (the upgrading concept is not popular in my country ;)) ).
BUT...I have seen other people here on PS being strongly influenced by the whole "the bigger the better" mentality and ending up getting huge rings which they are not comfortable wearing in their every day life, so they end up either selling them or keeping them locked in a drawer and taking them out only for special occasions. I can remember at least three such examples...
