Does PS cause you to have DSS?

I never thought I'd ever have DSS! My original diamond was 1 ct., so my upgrade to 1.63 seemed like such an increase that I even had trouble getting used to it! Most people I know wear their original engagement rings of a carat or less. So my new diamond was one of the largest in my social and family circles. So then I got the brilliant idea to sell my 1.63 because it's value had increased so much and buy a stone close in size but with fluorescence and then end up with some extra money to spend. I do love the new diamond, but it is just a little smaller and I CAN tell the difference!

I have recently been on the journey to try to buy an AVR at 1.8 cts and 7.8mm, but it turned out that it was a low I color and I just couldn't adjust to having F and G stones over the last 30+ years and then drop to low I. I have no idea at all when or if another higher color AVR will ever be available with the specs I want, and even then, would I be willing to pay the price premium for that when I could get an ideal cut stone in a larger size for the same money???

So now I am at square one and I know I should just be content and thankful for what I have. But I think coming here and seeing all the beautiful larger diamonds does give me DSS, yet there is this conflict of needing to balance my affection for diamonds with the reality of where I live.

I know some will be thinking of saying I should take a break from PS, but this is my hobby and I don't want to take a break!!!

Do you ever get DSS from being here?

I think I go through periods of having DSS. My original engagement ring is a 0.47 with side baguettes for 0.71 tcw. I thought I always wanted a larger ring and years ago bought myself a ring with a transitional diamond and half moon sapphire sides. The center diamond is about 1/3 carat, perhaps smaller because it's not very deep. I adore this ring, am absolutely still head over heels with it! It's a very wide ring so it takes up more space on my finger and sits much lower to my finger. I think, for me, I need that heft and width on my finger rather than a big single stone, a look that I thought I was a fan of but realised that I'm not unless the stone is very large. It looks too odd otherwise.

I've worn my ring sapphire ring for about 5 yrs and just love it. I could see having other rings, but I can't see changing it. My earrings are now 1.60 carats vs my 0.30 carat ring. I've just never found a ring that I love as much. I sometimes want other people's ring, especially here on PS, but I always come back to my ring.

Yes, I definitely have DSS. I'm not planning on upgrading the stones in my engagement ring (although I'd love to!), but it's something I think about often. Maybe someday...

I was born with DSS.

Sadly, yes! I love all the beauties on here and I want them all! I came here about a year ago in the summer, lurked then joined in October, as I was searching for ideas and information to take my PR solitaire into a 3 stone. I thought that solitaire was the cat's meow at 1.06 cts, for the longest time! Then, while creating the 3 stone (the inital - veeeerrrrryyyy BAD 3 stone...) I began to lust over all the stones - coloured and diamond - on this site.

It kind of got me into the diamond world in a BAAAAD way! I guess an upgrade is your gateway drug into DSS!!

Now, I'm hoping the OEC I'm picking up on Monday in Las Vegas, will satisfy the DSS I've felt. It just has to --- I have no more money left!

On occasion, I have wanted a larger center stone, which I attribute solely to PS. Sometimes, I catch my stone in a certain light, and the faceting pattern shows just the way I like, and I really feel like I couldn't replace it.

DS - Do your feelings ever subside? Maybe wait it out before making a decision?

Rhea - Do you have a thread on the transitional with sapphires? It sounds perfect!

Yes, for sure it does!!! I see so many people it happens to, too! People will say in my social circle I have the biggest bling but then the go for bigger and bigger. I do remember a few posters who left and came back saying being away helps the DSS go away. I have been here almost as long as you DS so it is interesting to watch from the sidelines. I went to JCK and sat next to Erica and Grace and they had some amazing 3 carat OEC; I mean the most amazing OEC I have ever seen for 50K, or something like that. Anyway, I was in love. I looked at it and realized, for PS this is normal but for my lifestyle, no way, even if we made lots of money. It was not something I have seen people wearing where I live, even the wealthy here do not sport rings like too often. I do think it is fun to admire though! :D

Lol, Enerchi, at the "gateway drug"!

Loves Vintage...yes, you are right that I need to not make any rash decisions!

Oh, PS absolutely gives me DSS! It's the reason I purchased an 8 mm stone after wearing a 6.5 stone for 3 years! I received a one carat stone on my 25th, and after wearing a .33 stone it felt huge. After seeing all the beautiful larger stones here on PS I got an 8 mm OEC and I really do love it - but I was kind of shocked that for some reason it didn't appear that much bigger than the one carat to me. I think the reason is that the one carat wedding set has diamond melee, sits somewhat high off my finger and takes up a lot of space on my finger. My OEC is set in a simple solitaire setting, set low and I wear a plain band with it, so I think that has something to do with it. It's an older cut too, so maybe it has a little leakage? I don't know. But I will say the 8 mm shows up much better at a distance.

I considered a reset for a few seconds, but I really love my antique setting and I feel the look of a solitaire and plain band is just more my style - although have been looking for a thin diamond band to wear with the solitaire for a little extra bling.

I was experiencing DSS pretty badly for a while there - just from seeing all of the larger stones here on PS - especially the ones in simple solitaires - I just love that look. I reached a point where I was considering a break from PS. I was almost feeling a little tortured, which is absolutely ridiculous. My cure for DSS has been a financial one - I just really don't want to sink any more money into diamonds right now. I still have a little residual guilt from the purchase of the OEC. I also really, really love my stone. It makes me happy to put it on every morning. I'm feeling content with the size of my stone now, but if DSS comes back I think I'll take a break from PS. It's hard though - I spend four days a week with my mother and PS is like a lifeline while she's watching her 6th episode of Law and Order!

Honestly, it boggles my mind an almost 2 carat stone would seem a little small to me! I don't wear much jewelry and my few other diamond pieces are relatively small, and interestingly I have no DSS with them. What can I say, I just love the look of a big rock on the hand! :D

eta: sorry for writing such a long post, I hope you could all stay awake - it's just that I have nobody IRL to chat with about these things!

Skippy, I SO want to go to the PS get together at JCK, but I am really afraid of seeing all those amazing diamonds! :errrr: I am in the exact same boat in that even the wealthier older women I know do not wear large diamonds!!! There is one who wears a very beautiful OEC (probably in the 2-3 ct. range) that was inherited from her mother-in-law, and one other girl under 40 has around a 2 ct. EC. But most people I know wear around a carat. So I am okay and wouldn't stand out too much if I slightly increased my diamond size, but I know I wouldn't be comfortable over that 1.8 ct. mark.

HI:

Stay on PS--but change hobbies! :saint: Just kidding of course.

PS doesn't "cause" anything for me; has only increased my sphere, of options, in regards to vendors.

The size for my upgrade was influenced by many things, but not being a part of this site. My husband told me to get a BIGGER ring, but I had to draw the line somewhere.....

In the final analysis, if you want a bigger stone--get one, if it doesn't cause hardship for you: that would be the one and only factor that would be of concern "to me". Not otherpeoplesstuff.

cheers--Sharon

I can totally relate!!! I do not want to overspend, either. And I have absolutely no one to discuss it with around here! I am really happy for you that you found an OEC that you love! I think it is a perfect size!

I really shouldn't blame it on PS. I have always loved jewelry. PS just goes gives us the knowledge to buy intelligently and access to great diamonds!

I have credit for the first diamond plus this second diamond and wouldn't even want to spend that total amount on one diamond. So I definitely have plenty of resources to trade up and not use all the money if I sold the current stone. I probably don't need to keep two rounds.

I've had it but after being on PS for so long, I discovered there is a difference between what looks good on others and what I'd feel comfortable having in real life! My eng ring diamond is now one I'd like to keep forever, even in it's small size, but I'd like a new setting.

There are other diamond jewelry pieces that I could go larger on, but not everything. For example, I love about 1/2 ct for a pendant and shrinkage hasn't set in with my pendant (my bezeled .38 looks about that size on me). For earrings, I could easily pull off 1 ct per ear...it would go against "the rules" having larger earrings than everything else, but I would totally go for that, if given the chance!

Definitely! I think they need to put in a disclaimer that when you join that you will be addicted and spend lots of $$$! However, I've always been a diamond enthusiast--it's only just now that I'm able to fulfill my dream pieces after almost 15 years of marriage! DH does help to keep me in check, though! I wish I had found this site when I first got engaged so I could have taken advantage of all of the great trade in policies and not wasted my money on other pieces in the first place!

DS, I think once you find "the one," DSS will not be as much of a problem for you! Maybe Jonathan can cut a custom AVR for you?

That's a "Yes Hallelujah" for me! I look at my friend's rings and I'm happy with my size. Everyone has barely a carat and only one has a little under the 1.5 mark. But then I come here and I see Phoenix's bling and then Frankie's and then now Bliss and I'm aghast at how small my ring is! Plus! Being a larger size finger girl, it doesn't help! But, the good thing is that PS has made me realize that I LOVE warmer colors and that I can go warmer and bigger!

Yes, finding PS earlier would have been good! I would have also avoided some mistakes!

He probably can do that, but I figure he'd have to buy a 2 ct. stone to cut down to 1.75 so effectively I might be paying for the larger stone. Not exactly sure how that would work, but I have to decide if the extra money is worth it.

I can honestly say "no"! I changed my stone a bunch of times while engaged, and now I'm happy to keep the stones I was married with - it's my one nod to sentimentality since it's something DH feels (bizarrely!) strongly about... I feel like I've got the Basics down so I'm ready to move onto Unique and Unexpected ::)

Well, you know me well enough to know that my primary ailment is SSS - Setting Stagnation Syndrome! 8)

Oh yea without a doubt..I always thought 1 ct was plenty big enough...but I guessed wrong lol

No, PS didn't give me DSS. But it did make me extremely picky about the stone itself, and the quality of my setting!

Oh gosh, that IS a killer and many of us suffer from that as well! My problem is settling on ONE! But I will say, I love my Vatche solitaire and really would be happy with that forever. It is my safest bet!

I am hoping you still love your 5 stone..right Yssie???

I don't think I have DSS. I was blessed with small hands, haha. I never think my diamonds look that big until I see a picture of them on me, and then I think "Yah, time to quit." The largest one I have is a 7.8mm diameter, and it looks huge on me, so I'm done. When I go to jewelry stores, I always overestimate the ct weight of the RBs in the cases, and .75ct or 1ct looks huge to me. I wear a .8ct 6mm daily, and it's plenty large enough for the workplace. The larger stones only get worn around the house or for special occasions.

I have always been a size ho but never had the bucks! Ps has made me aware of how cut not actual ct makes a difference.
I have always lusted after my cousins 3ct old cut. When my mom got the double diamond (that is about 3cttw ) that I was given for my 40th bday my uncle got the 3ct, which he gave my cousin for her 40th! My cousin and I almost swapped at my moms funeral!! My kids wouldn't let me, so I am determined to find a third stone and make it a rockin three stone! That should cure it, I think;)

Well, having a size 8.25 ring finger...that doesn't help to begin with. Then you see all these huge diamonds on itty bitty ring fingers like Bliss and Frankie and Yssie - that doesn't help matters, either! :Up_to_something: DSS is definitely chronic for me. I think I need some finger lipo-sculpting surgery AND bigger bling!

I suffered from DSS the first few years on PS then slowly became desensitized / immune to it. Of course it helps that the price of diamonds have doubled since my last upgrade.  Everything has increased exponentially; diamonds, coloured stones and settings. Everything except my salary. :(sad

No. I have a firm grip on reality and have no trouble separating PS fantasies from my actual lifestyle. I love to look at beautiful jewels here and on vendor's sites, but I never feel like my diamond is inadequate.

It's not quite DSS - no shrinkage. DVD, maybe? Diamond Variety Disorder.

My original stone is a carat and a half MRB - it's a great size. But then I fell in love with chunky facets and high crowns, and started looking for an old cut.

My 5 year anniversary upgrade is 8.8 mm, which I think is my boundary - same width as my nail bed, which is what looks best and most balanced to my eye. But then I see something like FranFine's EC ... Or Haven's cushion ... Krisydarling's OMB ... And I'm all of a sudden like a kid with Pokemon. Gotta catch 'em all!

So, yeah. I don't think I want to go bigger - just maybe to start scoping out a chunky hella warm, verging on yellow cushion around the same size for the 10 year anniversary for variety. ;)

Haha, Circe, I can relate to the variety issue as well! I like my mrb fine, but I'd also like an AVR/OEC, AVC, and a copy of Fran Fine's EC would be very very nice!!!

No. All of my friends have diamonds under a carat. PS is not reality for me. I like to ogle the jewels on here though!

I am looking at bigger stones but I'll buy based on my own preferences, milestones, finances etc. I will take my style cues from the good ladies of PS as always :sun:
