I don't think it makes someone crass or vulgar or sound stupid to pepper their speech w/bad swears. It's colorful and it is an embellishment. To me, anyway. Again, not at school, not in the grocery store..I'm not picking out cheese dip like "aw [censored] are you kidding me? Where in the goddamn hell is the mozzarella kind? ****ing idiots". I don't wander around my house mumbling random swear words, or routinely go stand in a crowd of children and chant [censored] [censored] [censored] like some sort of demented chicken clucking. If you bring your kids here and I'm talking to you, they may here a shit/damn/hell. My dad and brother have said the F word in front of my kids, as have JD and I. That doesn't make us bad parents or bad people.
maybe it is a Chinese culture thing, but my parents (from the old country) taught me not to use foul languages in public b/c if their friends heard me using foul languages it will be a bad reflection on them as not being good parents.

Continue in those ways if you want to, even if 99.99999% of Americans today differed.
Majority is just a number.
Follow your heart.

Are you kidding me? Chinese insults are way worse than swear words. That's right, I'm talking about those old school poetry type sentences used as insults when they want to call you a piece of s't but hide it behind fancy words. They'll insult not only you but all your ancestors! If the intention is there, it's the same.

i have not heard a single swear word slip out of their mouths.

I went to school with lots of girls who never swore, drank, smoked, or gambled in front of their parents. Their parents also thought they were virgins till they got married. Doesn't mean any of it is true though. ;))

curse in front of women?

This is an odd question for the 21st century. Since when is a woman to be protected from real life? Is this 1913 or 2013?

If someone, guy or gal, is cursing as a part of their everyday speech . . . like using "eff" as an all-purpose word . . . then I wonder about their choices and their intelligence. Crassness never impresses.

If someone, guy or gal, is using "language" only when provoked or seriously angry (and I doubt that any one of us has NOT done this), then I don't usually blink. Unless the spewing of curse words gets excessive.

DF, do swear words in Cantonese, Mandarin or other languages spoken in China include references to sex and bodily elimination too?

Not DF, but yes. One of my favorite is when an insult is made about a crappy nobody wants to visit/live/see. "The place where birds won't even s't" The child friendly version is "the place where birds wont lay eggs".

Kenny, believe me... Cantonese is the leader of foul languages in the world... :knockout: no other languages on earth will ever come close... :nono:..when they speak in Cantonese their sentences will always start with something about your Mama's private part of her body,it's so natural for them.

Well, that and mom's private place is more creative than the simple swear words we have in English.

Kenny...say i bump into a friend on the street...it'll go something like this...F your Mama's P---Y, where have you been? long time no see.they'll always "F" your Mom first before get on with their conversations.

This is exactly why your "cultural" explanation is total BS. You are such a hypocrite. A common swear word is nothing compared to the vulgarity you have uttered.

To clarify, Dear PSers, this kind of speech is not common among all, just some.

i was referring to my parent's generation. i have never heard my parents use any bad words.

I always wake up very early and do a few things around the house before getting back into bed with a book. As I was doing some chores in the kitchen this morning I thought about this thread and the song, "She Took It Like A Man" by the country group Confederate Railroad. It is a very sly song, very intelligent, that uses the phrase "took it like a man" as a double entendre. I think it sets out to make the point that male behavior is usually a bit more ...out there...than female. Why else even ask just the men about cussin' after all?

I hated like the devil
To tell her we were through
I was sure it would break her heart
Tear her world in two

She is such a fragile thing
Lord, I hate to make her cry
So I broke it to her gently
When I told her goodbye

She cussed me like a sailor
Kicked a hole through the kitchen wall
She threw a fit and threw the phone
Half-way down the hall

She said"I'll be down at the bar"
Then I heard the front door slam
I guess all in all
She took it like a man

I was thinking she'd reach out to me
And beg me not to go
Or run straight to her momma's
'Cause I'd hurt her so

Thought she'd be devastated
I had a tender moment plan
I didn't think that she could take it
But she took it like a man

Repeat Chorus

I was raised to never swear in the presence of a lady and I won't. My Wife and I have been married for 5 years (partners 7) and I would bet she hasn't heard me swear more than twice (stubbing toes included!). I choose not to swear not because she is a delicate flower that couldn't handle hearing those words, but rather out of respect. I carry this over to all of my interactions with women. I also hold doors, pull out chairs, open car doors etc...

I curse. A lot.

BUT, I know the environments I can curse in. For example, I do not curse in front of my patients. I curse in front of co-workers who curse too. If I notice that someone isn't much of a curser, I try to curb it. I know some people really hate it so I don't like making anyone uncomfortable. In front of my husband though, I curse ALL the time. Sometimes I actually love to curse. If that makes me vulgar, I don't give a shit ;)

AN I swear in front of JD all the time too..around him it really is a bit of ************ity****. Our lives are so mundane, the only thing we have is Netflix and trying to come up w/new and funny bad swears.

What does not offend me: swearing.
What does offend me: chauvinism.

So, swear if you like, if that's what you'd ordinarily do. I don't need to be shielded from profanity, it isn't respectful or appropriate as far as I can figure out. I'm your equal, whether you're male or female. My status isn't derived from my gender. If you think I'm someone you should / could / should not swear in front of, by all means respond accordingly, but please, not because I'm female. There's more to me than my gender.
