So my partner and I are getting married and we have been doing some shopping for wedding bands. We are looking for platinum bands with diamonds. We both really love the Tiffany Lucida half eternity with Lucida diamonds, but it's only 4mm wide (http://www.tiffany.com/explore/wedding-gift-guide-wedding-bands/lucida-band-ring-GRP00260?fromGrid=1&search_params=p+1-n+10000-c+-1-s+11-r+-t+lucida%20band-ni+1-x+-lr+-hr+-ri+-mi+-pp+81+2&search=1&origin=search&searchkeyword=lucida%20band&trackpdp=search&fromcid=-1&trackgridpos=1). The sales rep told us it's unisex and comes in men's sizing but it doesn't help that there's a lady modeling the ring on the site! It looks good on us but it is a bit on the thin side. However I like the overall design of the band and absolutely love the melee diamonds with Lucida cut. I did get in touch with WhiteFlash for a quote on a similar ring in a 5mm width using Asscher diamonds in a channel setting, and received a very competitive quote with twice as much TCW included.

The only issue is - I'm not entirely sold on the Asscher cut. Whiteflash does have a similar ring that they've made in the past (https://www.pricescope.com/files/images/galleries/CustomPlatinumChannelSetAsscherWeddingBand.jpg and https://www.pricescope.com/files/images/galleries/PlatinumChannelSetAsccherWeddingBand.jpg) and the Asschers just don't seem to catch the light as well as the Lucida cut does.

I guess at this point I'm debating between just getting the Lucida because I love the cut or trying to find a custom ring with a similar cut. Is it possible to get the similar cuts (Lucida, Flanders, square radiant) in melee diamonds?

What do you guys think - is the 4mm Lucida too feminine for men (of course keep in mind we are gay! ) Or would we be better off getting a thicker band with another cut of diamonds?

Of course it were up to my partner, he would get a 1.5 Octavia Asscher solitaire in a nice masculine men's setting!

4mm is plenty wide for a man if you like it.

My dad wears a thin band, less than 3 mm. I just finished watching a movie set in the 60s where a man also wore a thin band, 2-3 mm. My uncle wears the Tiffany Etoile band, I believe also around 4 mm.

The Etoile was one of the designs that first caught our eye and took us into Tiffany to begin with. Unfortunately they don't make it in the wider size any longer. I believe the widest they make it is 2.5mm or so.

This says it all.

If you want width, buy another band....but not the same one. Wear them together or separate...single or stack.

For years my DH wore a single custom 24K yellow gold band, then I bought him a 4 mm platinum Tiffany and he wore them together until he lost the yellow gold one diving.....now wears a wide Bvlgari B-Zero w/g band alone. Tastes change and variety!!

That's where we're getting married too! :appl:

I don't think that ring is too delicate for a men's band- I would definitely be tempted by the 5mm Whiteflash version you described though!

actually I fancy this would be a question of how big your fingers are - my FF has slender fingers, about the same size as mine (I'm a 5-5.5 on my RH ring finger) and a too-thick band looks HUGE and disproportionate on his fingers. I like the 4mm for its elegance, but if you have shorter larger fingers perhaps it might get lost visually!

For comparison's sake, here's a picture of one of my husband's 4.5 mm rings on his 7.75 finger.

Funny, I just got one of those and I just posted about our set of Octavia rings.
Did you see my thread or is this just an coincidence?

That ring is awesome! I love the brushed/mirror metal combo (I'm getting the same with my wedding band) and the Octavia is a great size. I'm not one to wear diamonds, but I might reconsider if I had that ring. :naughty:

I haven't gone and looked at the band in question in person, but going on your pictures the Tiffany one looks like it is made with Radiant cuts which have a high small fine fire and sparkle index and the ones you are getting quotes from are Asscher Cuts which have a much slower broader amount of flash fire and sparkle. If this is indeed true that could explain the difference. Get a quote with a thicker band using Radiant cuts.

Kenny just posted his ring now THAT is a magnificent ring. Have you thought about a smaller Octavia in a thinner band?

I really love the Lucia you've tried on; I do NOT think it's overly feminine or too thin. Is there even a "close" picture of the WF option?

Congratulations! best wishes for a long, happy marriage.. the ring is gorgeous... I think it is 'guy' enough.. my husband wears a thin gold band.. I have noticed more men wearing diamond bands as time goes on.. and I would take the Asscher also ;-)

I tend to agree with the above poster. The Lucida is a little too feminine from the pics, but I'm sure it can look very different in person. Part of the problem is that it's modeled and advertised for women, so the perception of a "woman's" band already exists. 4mm is fine as long as you have shorter and/or thinner fingers. I have very long fingers and I prefer ~6mm (so I've discovered). My left ring finger is ~9.25, so certainly not huge. The most important part of this is what YOU like. PS is an awesome place to learn and show off, but most of us will never meet in real life. Are you concerned that people will judge you based on your choice?

ETA: my comment might come off as a little convoluted. Basically, wedding bands, like e-rings, are all about personal preference. There is no right or wrong. Go with what you like. I suggest trying on several diamond bands of varying widths (even if the cuts are different) just to get an idea of your comfort zone regarding size.

I like the idea of the Lucinda with a plain wedding band. Kinda like having a "mangagement" ring and wedding band!

Well I would say go with a thicker band even if you gay. You are still men after all right? Not that you cant go thinner but you seem to be questioning it yourself which indicates you are not completely comfortable with the size. I sort of went through the same thing not with a wedding ring but for a ring for myself. Ultimately, I ended up having the original maker thicken the setting up slightly.

Gay marriage is really uncharted territory with all this traditional stuff so you can really do whatever you want. There are no rules to fallow, only your own. But I would say if you want a generality of what I have seen, most of the male couples (female coupes are a different story) get matching rings, usually more on the masculine looking side, AKA thicker and usually somewhat unique, like an unusual finish, design or some stones. I have not seen much of the infinity or eternity ring or the his and hers kind of thing or engagement / wedding band thing.

You mentioned your partner likes a thicker ring. Maybe you meet him half way and get a thicker setting with the diamonds all the way around. Most mens rings are 8 to 10 mm unless they are a totally simple wedding band which can be 4 to 6mm. I think a diamond band that thin tends to be only for women as an eternity ring. Keep in mind, most men do not ware diamonds to begin with so a full band if diamonds is going to garnish a lot of attention. And its not a fashion ring, in theory you will be wearing this for the rest of your life. But again, as long as you like it, who cares what other people think, did they buy it for you? But if you have any doubt, then its your gut telling you to go thicker.

If you like that square cut look in an eternity band, here is one I just saw the other day that is both wider and diamonds all around. And its labeled as a mans ring.

I will be posting my carre cut full eternity ring soon. I ordered one for Xmas! I think it is about 4.5-5mm in width. It is to be paired with my asscher solitaire. Yes I do like my diamonds!

Like most have alluded to- it is what u are most comfortable to wear. Matching or not, wider or not.. Try a few others in terms if width sizes. See what you can tolerate.

You can get 4 and 6 mm Etoile-style diamond bands from Benchmark http://benchmarkrings.com/product-detail.php?sku=LCF160DWG&ct=diamonds&sb=

I second this. You said you loved Etoile to begin with, and this is in 6 mm. The Etoile style has sparkle and interest, but is also understated. It's a beautiful ring. Congrats on your upcoming nuptials!

ETA: Also, the Etoile has the advantage of being an eternity ring. I don't know if it would bug you, but I don't like when the decorative part of a ring slides to my palm side. With an eternity style, you don't have to worry about that.

Have you tried this style on in person or just looked online? A lot has to do with your finger size/length. There have been *many* styles I've liked when seeing online but tried on in person and they didn't look right on me.

And, my husband's 6' 1" and bigger guy and has a 4 or 5 mm ring and it looks just right on his finger. It's just a plain band, though, but the mm size looks right. I think you pretty much have to try on in person to see (even if you don't have a Tiffany nearby you, try a chain store w/a similar style to get an idea of what that style will look like - keeping in mind, of course, they may have not-so-good diamonds inside the band, so just use as basic style gauge.)

For the price range you're looking at, you could easily go custom. If I were you I'd contact James Meyer.

And a big DITTO to what MC said about trying on various options. Figure out generally which width and thickness you prefer, and what size works for that width, and then call James Meyer. :wink2:

I like Whiteflash's more that Tiffany's. WF's band seems bolder. I really like tension settings on men, though, with a squarish center stone.

I'm sorry - I totally missed your preference for square-cut stones. I agree with Swingirl - I prefer Whiteflash's options. And since those are custom rings, you can play with the proportions and the width of the rings.

I don't mean to add confusion........... but my husband does not wear a wide band and I think it looks wonderful. Can you snap a pic of you & your guy wearing the Lucida? Forget the picture of the female model - I want to see it on your hand(s). I love the Lucida cut and I'm a fan of Tiffanys too. I think if you really love it then it's worth the $$$$$. You're not buying an engagement ring, right?

Just FYI about Tiffany, what you are mainly paying for is the name. Not saying that is a bad thing, if you want to say you have Tiffany then go for it. I have one myself (it was a gift). Sure you could argue quality, but its mostly name, status, reputation.

But if you are looking at getting the most bang for you buck, skip the famous names like Tiffany, Cartier, etc. Their mark up is sooooo crazy. Lets say a diamond is worth $800. A regular jeweler would mark that up at least 100 percent or even more so your price would be 1,600. OK that's typical. But that same diamond at Tiffany would probably cost double that closer to 3,000.

That is why White Flash could offer you such a "great deal" Basically any non name brand can do that. And no it really dose not hold its value if some day you need to sell it...OK maybe a little, but not much. That 3,000 ring would only fetch you 800 bucks if you are lucky.

I'm going to echo this! You love them. They are beautiful. Just wanted to add that my Dh wears a 2mm rose gold band on each hand can't get more feminine then that and there is nothing feminine about him. People actually compliment him all the time. We have matching bands and they each have matching engravings. At times he stacks them to make 4mm but he really prefers one on each finger. We live in a diverse community on the west coast where many people are doing their own thing that they love. Gigantic rocks to nothing at all. Do what you love!
