Hi! I have pored over these boards for months in my hunt for the perfect e-ring style. The advice and resources here are INVALUABLE and unmatched by anything else out there!!! So, in my quest to reset my ring, I knew where to come.

To make a long story short, my fiance and I pursued for many months a custom sapphire design with an excellent local designer. However as we encountered too long a period of stop and go, financial questioning, and doubts, we decided to totally switch tracks. After months of thinking sapphire-custom-huge budget, in the matter of hours I refocused on a simple solitaire I could reset later on. We put the bulk of our budget in a really beautiful, F-color 1.22ct Asscher set in platinum (I'm allergic to nickel, so white gold was ruled out). After picking the stone, I selected my solitaire setting in about 30 seconds.... I figured, "I'm going to change it anyway, and it's just a solitaire! How complicated could it be?" Bad move. Now that I actually have it on my finger, I'm unhappy. My style has always been on the more eclectic/unique side (as evidenced by the initial sapphire hunt) as opposed to uber classic and commercial. Somehow the solitaire I picked is all the things I didn't want.... bulky, sitting up high, boxy... it looks like it could have come from Jared's. It makes the stone look smaller, in my opinion. I think the band is about 5mm, and my ring size is a 6.

So my issue is as follows: I want to reset my ring, ASAP. I have credit at the store where we purchased the ring in the form of my current setting (950 platinum). I LOVE the art deco look (the original sapphire ring was going to be a riff on a Tiffany design from the 20s), and so I asked for millgrain on my solitaire as my unique twist. As you can see from the pic, it's so slight it almost looks like a mistake! I'd like to keep a deco vibe in my ultimate reset. The way I see it, I have two options: I can switch for a lighter solitaire setting with essentially no additional cost. I'm thinking maybe a very thin yellow gold band, white gold basket with a little filigree detail on the shank? OR, option 2 would be to sink in some additional $$$ (I'd be willing to pitch in maybe 3-4K) to create/purchase an ideal setting that I would want to wear for a loooong time, because any solitaire would ultimately be temporary. I have been dreaming of a baguette halo with a plain shank to really amp up my relatively small Asscher, as it faces up around 1ct... very bottom heavy stone.

I love LM and have contacted him about some of his Asscher settings. He doesn't want to do any of his French or carre cut side settings with my stone since the proportions wouldn't be great (small stone syndrome!). I DON'T like pave, and would prefer a more vintage look, hence the baguette halo desire. However, I think he is out of my price range. VC seems to have the same issue with cost and style availability. Please offer any advice you have! I really want to love what I have on my finger. My current setting is below.

I am currently loving some of the Royal T designs from ERD, check them out if you contact them they might be able to make what you want or you might be able to modify something they already have made;

http://www.engagementringsdirect.com/royal-t-collection-pclid-16.html

Something like this might work too unless you hate the halo, but I would ring them and ask;

Beautiful stone!

Asscher girl's ring is one of my favourite rings with an art deco twist:

Re: Design advice needed!!! Please help me reset my 1.22 Ass

I LOVE this. I would ask ERD to make it, as they are good and have made similar designs (like the ruby halo they have) and they are reasonable

Re: Design advice needed!!! Please help me reset my 1.22 Ass

Love your inspiration. Not a fan of pave round halos with step cuts so I would stick with all step cut-just my opinion.

Re: Design advice needed!!! Please help me reset my 1.22 Ass

Love all these suggestions. I think I'm on the side of lambskin in that I think step cuts all play nicely together, and RBs kind of break up the party. I'm afraid I won't have ANY flash, though, if I do all step. Would carre or french sides up the sparkle factor enough? I've been thinking I just want a plain band (maybe a gold band and white gold head for the diamonds??? would that be weird??).

Also, I'm concerned on price. Although I mentioned that I talked to LM and VC, it's really looking like I have to stick with my local vendor (Diamond Doctors in Dallas, who I highly recommend). They do custom work in addition to providing stones at wholesale prices. I would expect they might be in the range of ERD, maybe a little higher as they have to maintain a brick and mortar location. Is a baguette halo doable for 3-4k? I know it's tricky to get the right sizing on the baguettes and traps.

PS thank you so much for the feedback so far. This is so awesome!!! :naughty:

Re: Design advice needed!!! Please help me reset my 1.22 Ass

Ugh Acinom, I keep staring at Asscher girl's.... but all I can think is $$$$$. It may start to compete with my step halo dreams! I've never seen an Edwardian/filigree style setting with an Asscher. Hers looks like at least 2ct.... would this kind of setting swallow mine?

Re: Design advice needed!!! Please help me reset my 1.22 Ass

Hi Deco_assch!

I guess I should respond here because I was in a similar position not long ago. I have an asscher that's the same size (1.23, though mine is an octavia) and my original dream setting was the exact same setting you posted with the baguette halo!

I contacted ERD and spoke with Chris, who was super nice and helpful. ERD's quote for that design in platinum was $3500, which in my opinion was very reasonable. I also got a quote from Brian Gavin and theirs was $5500-- not so doable for me, though the photos they sent me of another baguette halo they had made were quite lovely.

I eventually decided that my octavia was too busy for a halo, but that's still my favorite halo setting ever and I'm going to get one someday for a colored stone, I've decided.

I did contact LM at one point to ask about a five stone with traps and bullets but he had the same concerns about my stone being too small, though his quote for a simple setting with tapered baguettes was reasonable.

In the end, I went with a Jeff Cooper setting with tapered baguettes and tiny carres. I think this setting is great for asschers!

I think my carres and baguettes add sparkle and flash to the setting (a lot, actually, and my ring gets a lot of attention IRL), but they don't flash the same way rounds do. IMO, steps and brilliants have very different personalities. I think choosing a setting with more step cuts will add more flash to your ring, but your center stone will still definitely be the star of the show. I wouldn't worry about your ring not being sparkly enough.

Edit: Okay, I have one more thing to add:

Though I normally like step+step the best, there is one setting with round melee that I think would be just awesome with an asscher and would really help amp up the dimensions of your stone:

This setting is awesome, and it's not as expensive as it looks. I've seen webdiva's ring in person and all I can say is

Re: Design advice needed!!! Please help me reset my 1.22 Ass

Look up "Gypsy baguette halo".

You'll see my journey.

I have a 1.09 asscher. F VS1.
I wanted a setting to beef it up and make it look more unique. I didn't like pave.
Investigated the baguette halo of it all. And every art deco variation of a setting there was out there for 4 years.
Ended up with a pave halo and a plain shank.

If you want the baguette halo, contact Mark at ERD and have him quote you, and also Steven Kirsch. BGD has done one, and that's worth its weight in gold. But their price will be around 5500. That's probably the route I'd go though, if you can afford it. Experience matters with baguette halos.

It is an expensive setting though and involves custom cut stones.

There are ways to tweak it and make it more affordable, if you are interested. Basically though, those all involve straight baguettes for the sides of the halo, and rounds for the corners. You may not like the look. But it will be a huge cost savings.

I think Cygnet's setting is just gorgeous. And that's the route I'd go if you hate pave and are on a budget.

Hi! Yes, her center stone is 2,5 ct but I am sure they can make the dimensions right to match your center stone!
With such a sparkling center stone, small melee cannot 'take over', but the dimensions need to be right!

Regarding your question about the effect of carres or french cuts: I only have experience with french cuts. French cuts glisten, rather then sparkle. With your center stone however, I feel that baguettes will be really pretty or round melee like in Asscher Girl's ring.

I love the example above with tapered baguetes and tiny carres!

Re: Design advice needed!!! Please help me reset my 1.22 Ass

Ok, I've been processing the info here... my conclusions are as follows:

- I LOVE LOVE LOVE cygnet's ring!!! Even has a matching band, super cool... I checked the manufacturer's site and it looks like it breaks my bank, though :((( ~$4.5k for Ering setting alone is not in the cards right now.

- If I want to do a baguette halo right, I'll need to plunk down at least 5-6k, which I really can't do right now. But, when I do want to do that, ERD is a good option. Do they work with yellow gold, though? I only see white metals available.... I'm really liking the white head/yellow band idea.

Ultimately, I think I found a solution that will help me achieve my deco-look/step-cut-party goal. When I went to the Diamond Doctor storefront, I found a yellow gold setting with a white gold "head" of straight baguettes and basket for the Asscher. It looks pretty close to the below pic, except that the baguettes are straight (which I prefer) and my stone is square. They have a hand engraver onsite who can do some beautiful deco style engraving on the plain yellow gold shank! It's light, striking, and much more what I was originally picturing.

diamond-engagement-ring-emerald-cut-baguette-3-stone-yellow-gold-large.jpg

I think I'll have to put my halo dreams on hold for now... I have only had my ring for about a week , so I can appreciate the solitaire for now and then update in 5-10 years. We're only 23, so it will be nice to have some more financial leeway at that point. I'm not 100% sure the price is fair, though. They want about $2.1k for the setting, and then the engraving is an extra couple hundred, making it a round 2.5k. We only paid about $950 for the current (rather hefty) platinum setting, and they're going to give us that in credit. I like being able to deal with a vendor in person, so I'll probably go for it, but I'm not sure.

Feedback? It's a classic setting, but I think for my aesthetic desires and price range it may be the way to go.

Re: Design advice needed!!! Please help me reset my 1.22 Ass

A baguette side three stone ER ring is so classic and elegant. :appl: My favorite ER style still is with two baguettes flanking a solitaire. I have never regretted this setting for my ER. It looks like an engagement ring and will always look like an engagement ring. For more blingy options I used more elaborate settings for my RHR diamonds or colored stones. BTW those baquettes in your photo look really cool and not so straight cut.

Re: Design advice needed!!! Please help me reset my 1.22 Ass

Very classic. Those look like french cut baguettes. They are really awesome.

I think you are making the right choice!

Re: Design advice needed!!! Please help me reset my 1.22 Ass

Thanks for the ring love, guys <3

I love the setting you've chosen! Very classic and elegant. I know you said you prefer the straight cut baguettes (also a good choice), but those french cut baguettes are to die for. Soooo pretty!

I didn't realize some places were charging so much for the Jeff Cooper setting! 4.5k is insane. Mine is 14K white gold, so the retail cost for it was only 2600, but 4.5k for platinum is too much. I noticed that Solomon Brothers has the setting for 3500 and Genesis Diamonds has it for 3180. I have never shopped with either of those companies, but Genesis has good reviews on Yelp so if you're still interested, you might consider looking into that.

I think you can't go wrong either way!

Re: Design advice needed!!! Please help me reset my 1.22 Ass

Oooooooo I didn't even notice they were frenchies! That may be why I like this picture so much... it's not the identical ring I found, but the closest pic I saw online. They're going to have to make the setting for me anyway, so I wonder if they could swap the step baguettes for french cut. I bet it would really up the uniqueness and sparkle of the whole piece. Also, I've seen some really to-die-for french cut wedding bands from Single Stone that would look smashing with them.

Ok team, I think we are circling the wagons at this point.... final question is, from a jeweler's perspective will french cuts significantly up the price?? Obviously they are significantly less common.

Re: Design advice needed!!! Please help me reset my 1.22 Ass

If the price increase / difference isn't much, I would opt for the French cut baguettes as they add a bit more "something" to the overall ring. Cygnet's ring is incredibly gorgeous too and I didn't realize it is THAT expensive!

Re: Design advice needed!!! Please help me reset my 1.22 Ass

DD says that swapping for french cut will add 1-1.5k to the cost :blackeye:. They'd have to cut the stones to match the setting/my stone instead of just grabbing their stock setting and modifying the basket. Are french cuts really that out of the box??? I think I'll have to go with the stock option, since that minor tweak isn't worth the price to me.

OK, before I bite the bullet, and other cost-effective setting ideas? This baguette solitaire, while not 100% ideal, has been the most satisfactory solution I've been able to find so far.

Re: Design advice needed!!! Please help me reset my 1.22 Ass

What is your budget and what are your stone's exact measurements.

Re: Design advice needed!!! Please help me reset my 1.22 Ass

Unfortunately I don't have my stone's exact measurements with me... (at fiance's house), but it's a rather deep stone. Do you have a particular setting in mind?

I was willing to go up to 4k for a perfect, amazing baguette halo, but if I'm doing a solitaire I wouldn't want to go higher than 2k. As wedding planning begins, there are too many other places I need to be allocating cash.

Oh my gosh!! YAY! :appl: :appl: :appl:

Yes, please post pics! Did you buy it in person or online? If you bought it online and haven't seen it up close yet, there's a chance they are actually carres and not princesses-- some retailers will write "princess" for any square stone and don't realize that carres are different. I didn't think Jeff Cooper even made that setting with princesses. Now I'm super curious! Pics! Pics! Pics! It will be marvelous!

Re: Design advice needed!!! Please help me reset my 1.22 Ass

Edit: Just read the whole thread.. I should before posting.. I LOVE the 3 stone with baguettes, it's always been my favorite.. always will be.. I just wish my baguettes were a better quality.. I think they are soso.. I can become greedy when buying diamonds.. the yellow gold setting is very very nice..I think the thinner band will accentuate your diamond.. I love the pix below but I think it could be a future setting.. :) and art deco will go out of style again BUT the 3 stone ring will ALWAYS be in vogue. Classic.

rt-104.jpg

I love this one.. You wanted a sapphire to begin with and maybe you could get blue sapphires instead of rubies (or garnets).. I love this ring.. I love emerald cuts and baguettes and asschers.. your stone is lovely.. I think it would be enhanced in platinum.. I agree the modern setting with the miligrain isn't exactly a match but your ring is lovely.. I reset my diamond 1.66 MRB with a custom job with some baguettes I had in the previous setting and the picture I had was with miligrain and I am a modern girl (for an old lady) and i didn't really like miligrain but in looking at my ring now I wish I HAD done it :) and the setting I was using as my model had pave all around the prongs and I'm not a fan of pave either (my husband calls it diamond dust) but I wish I had done it too since I think my setting needs more pizzazz! but that just means in a few years I'll reset it again.. congratulations on your engagement.. wish you much happiness.

Re: Design advice needed!!! Please help me reset my 1.22 Ass

Thanks for the final halo inspiration ;) Give me 10 years, then we'll talk!!! For now, I could not be happier with the final result!!!! I am so, so, so, so pleased. It's fabulous on.... completely new and modern while having a deco flair due to the step cuts. I have never seen anyone else wearing anything like this! Give me asschers and steps anyday in a sea of RBs and pave halos. Thank you to everyone who contributed, ESPECIALLY CYGNET!!!! Thank you for letting me shamelessly copy your ring. I will wear it with pride! Ring twins 4 eva!

Ends up, this was a custom setting Diamond Doctors made... possibly for a client who requested and then didn't buy... they didn't give me exact details. It DOES have princess squares, but they are cute, sparkly, and tiny. The setting itself has 1ct of diamonds. WA POW! Love it.

WOW so bright! It's just flat out lovely.

You can also add milgrain later if you want a small change. I love it as is though. Wear it in the best of health!

Re: Design advice needed!!! Please help me reset my 1.22 Ass

As a step cut fan I really enjoyed this thread and all of the spectacular setting suggestions. I have to say your ring turned out fabulous!
That setting is perfect! I hope you enjoy it for many years to come :))

Re: Design advice needed!!! Please help me reset my 1.22 Ass

OH MY GOSH!!! WOW!

Ring twins! I'm so happy for you! ::)

That happened so fast! It looks gorgeous, and all of the stones are so bright! I think the setting really makes that asscher pop... and it looks huge! I am so glad you're happy with the end result. Are those little hearts on your prongs?!

p.s.

Lol, I just noticed that the thread title was truncated and is missing the last four letters, so I guess the forum thought you were trying to say a bad word and changed it to "Re: Design advice needed!!! Please help me reset my 1.22 a$$"

Does PS have a profanity filter?! For some reason this is incredibly funny to me.
