An acquaintance of mine is a gem cutting hobbyist, and he sent me a precision cut cobalt blue spinel. He describes it as “blue kryptonite” and I can’t say he’s wrong! It is very, very BLUE and almost seems to glow.

Next to a precision cut sapphire:

Oh my goodness! That is incredible! The color is just stunning! I had no idea cobalt spinel was being grown (though I should have because it’s gorgeous). :lickout:

ETA. I just saw what you wrote about seeing it on LT. It’s gonna make someone very happy (plus the proceeds going to the humane society is just wonderful).

Ok, fess up. Who bought the emerald cut lab emerald from Gene today?
It’s stunning and even though I already have a cushion shaped emerald from Gene, I was totally going to buy this one too. I love the emerald cuts!

That I’ve seen (and admittedly I’m not an expert on lab-grown material), Djeva is the only company growing it and they make it really hard to get - you have to purchase a boule of every spinel color they offer as they won’t sell just the cobalt blue color. So that’s probably why we don’t see a lot of lab cobalt blue spinel out there.

Oh mannnnnn, I’m on the email list but didn’t receive anything! How do you stay so on top of it? Does Gene typically post new stuff at a certain time? I noticed the last few times have been on a Sunday.

That’s neat information about the lab spinels. What a shame they won’t just sell the cobalt...they’d make a fortune.

I don’t think Gene had sent out an email yet. He only posted one new gem...this emerald. It sold ASAP. I usually see him upload new gems on Sunday so I just start checking the site throughout the day (I have a life, I swear it :lol-2:). He uploaded on a Saturday the other week and it totally threw me. :P2

I confess, I lucked out and was able to purchase Gene's new lab emerald ... I think it should get to me Fri or Sat - very anxious to check it out IRL! I will update on the weekend after receipt.

FWIW, a few years ago Doug Menadue (Bespoke Gems) had and/or was able to obtain cobalt blue lab/synthetic rough ... I didn't end up ordering at that time but per photos it looked to be fine quality and that electric cobalt blue.

The step-cut lab emerald from Gene is simply phenomenal - I was blown away by its beauty - it was so amazing I could only peek at it and then quickly put it away because it seemed unbelievably gorgeous - when I looked again, it was still that amazing ... it is fantastically gemmy and glow-y, and Gene's step-cut showcases its perfectly. It has that Colombian/Muzo emerald color, in my eyes. I couldn't be more happy with this stone.

Here are some IRL pics:

Just for fun I've been trying to find some pretty lab-created pad sapphires. Anyone have good sources for them? It's one of those things I could never justify paying full price (for a natural one), but the color play would be hard to accomplish in a lab-created stone. Just curious if anyone has seen good examples!

Goodness that’s phenomenal! So glad you’re happy with it! Emeralds are kind of out of my price range right now so I might have to look into lab created. Thanks for sharing your pictures! Do you have any ideas how you might set it?

Oh WOW. I already have my own JW lab emerald but I want this one too! That color is to die for!

My emerald in CvB setting should be completed this week I'm told. I sent that off so fast, I barely remember what it looked like. Hope it looks as good as marymm's!

It is both my first lab created gem & first alexandrite. It was rainy and overcast all day so I haven’t seen it in decent sunlight. I absolutely could not get my phone to capture green. I played with the settings & it never looked green on my phone pictures :confused2: it definitely goes greenish. It’s very unusual in that it has this rich deep burgundy or maroon base color even when flashing purple or green. Overall, I’m so happy with it! It is unique in my collection, sparkles a ton, and is perfectly cut!

Oh I forgot to add that Jeff’s pictures are very close to what I’ve seen the gem do in different light. Just couldn’t capture it on my phone.

It will be set into a ring but I have noooo idea what look I’d want! I have to stop buying gems so I can save to set them!:geek2::lol-2: I have two I want to get set before the end of the year! When this one’s time has arrived I’ll probably ask for ideas! It might be a while though... :)

@mrsgreeneyes, Do you have any idea when you will post the lab spinel? I have been stalking LoupeTroop every day hoping to buy it. I know that I will have a lot of competition, though. :lol-2:

Honestly I’ve been trying to figure out how to handle/price it. I just have no idea! I saw where I think Caysie (?? Forgive me if it wasn’t her) set up an auction on LT - basically people just emailed her offers and whoever had the highest offer won. I might do it that way.

@mrsgreeneyes, I would be really hesistant to make a blind bid, personally. Would you consider putting it on Ebay? I know that there would be fees but I think you might get higher bids that way. I could imagine people getting caught up and bidding it higher when they can see the price. Or else convince your friend to cut more, if he has more rough.

I love that the money will go to the Humane Society! :appl:

Setting suggestion:
Something like @mrsgreeneyes beautiful sapphire? Yours is large enough to handle something like this.
sapphire leaves.jpeg

Wow that a neat ring! Those prongs are so cool! It’s a possibility, thank you for the suggestion! It will be a while before I set it. I have a few others before it!

I just hate to lose so much money to fees and PayPal. eBay will take 10% and PayPal 2.9%, I’d rather that money make it to the Humane Society. That said, I’m absolutely open to suggestion!

Are you allowed to sell it in the preloved section? You would be able to have a bidding process (albeit not anonymous) by having people post their bids. Then the winner would just pay you through paypal.

That's a good idea! I'll pop over there and read the rules on lab-created gems and auctions. =)2
