Some of you know my situation but basically I have a stone and an empty ring setting (waiting for the setting to be delivered) and I just need a local jeweler to put them together. I found two jewelers who will do it for me and not sure how to choose. I've learned that I'm very particular and like things to look perfect. I think my setting will be very easy to do, hard to mess up, it's a really simply 6 prong in white gold. It may need to be rhodium plated (I'll decide if I want it plated when it arrives and I can see the natural white gold color).

One is a bench jeweler named Jen Green, recommended by another PSer. I can't remember who it was now, but they said she has done a lot of custom work and she's great. She is a one woman business, has a small studio on jewelers row not a big retail store. I've been communicating with her and she seems great, but she said she would have her diamond setter set the diamond, she wouldn't do it herself, and I'm not sure if that's normal?

The other jeweler I found by calling around and it was a recommendation from another jeweler (Barrio Neal) that said they don't work with items they don't provide, but this other jeweler would. His name is Anthony Fontana, he has a small store on jewelers row. I don't have any personal recommendation for him, just the store that referred me. Waiting to hear back if he sets the diamond himself, but he's been very quick to respond to me for other questions and seems like great customer service.

How should I pick? Any other recommendations for Philly jewelers who will set a stone and setting that I provide? Bonus if they also do rhodium plating in house, in case I decide to do that?

It isn't uncommon for jewelers to employ setters and polishers.

Anthony responded that he does the diamond setting and rhodium dipping himself.

Go and look at stuff they have done (or the setter you’d get has set). Bring your loupe and inspect some samples. Then you’ll know if one is better than the other or if you have any problems with their work.
