Hello,

I posted this in Cahrmypoo's Maytal Hannah smtb thread but there wasn't so much action over there so i'll try posting here to see if you will see it :)

hi Charmypoo,

just as everyone else here i love this ring and i'm convinced this is the ring to go for for my lady.

i'm looking at different diamonds for it and would love to hear your input on the options.

Option 1: an AVC from GoodOldGold http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/9875/ AVC's are very nice.. there is just something about this stone that doesnt really appeal to me in the same way as other AVC's i've seen.

Option 2: X-factor from ERD: http://www.engagementringsdirect.com/1.51-carat-g-vs2-x-factor-cushion-cut-diamond-gid-113233.html

Option 3: Another X-factor from ERD: http://www.engagementringsdirect.com/1.60-carat-e-vs1-x-factor-cushion-cut-diamond-gid-115475.html

Option 4: Similar diamond to what is in your ring. It's a Daniel K Cushion with 8 main facets (1.67ct G-VS1), i'm just not sure this is a good diamond. i have read your HW ring guide and the table seems a bit big and i'm unsure if the ASET is good enough for the price. it also has a "natural" on the bottom side which i'm not sure what to think of. the price for this stone is 16k. (pictures below)

i would love to get your oppinion on these. thanks in advance (sorry for posting massive pictures..not sure how to change that)

I think the AVC is beautiful if you want an antique style cushion. I don't like #2 because it is just too square for me. I do think the shape of #3 is nice and it has a nice ASET. And #4 is too square and I think it's ASET is not as good as #3.

I personally love the cut on the 1.51 and think the aset looks the best on that one. You need to decide what type of cushion you like (antique or modern) and then decide which of these to consider. There's a big price difference between all of these stones and you'd also need to consider how much you'll be spending on the setting.

thanks for your replies,

I like both the AVC and the 8 thin main facet modern cushion that charmypoo has in her ring. https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/a-year-in-the-making-maytal-hannah-halo-erd-cushion.147719/

if i could choose i woudl go for the 8 main facet diamond but it's so hard to find a good one. i'm a bit concerned about the aset of this one and also the large table.

how big of a difference will the Xfactor look compared to the 8 main facet cushion?

I don't think it will look extremely different, personally, but Charmy may have other feelings about that. The one thing I noted about Charmy's is that her stone has about equal diameter in both directions. The 1.60 stone also is almost the same diameter both ways. The 1.52 is more rectangular and will have a different look than Charmy's. So you need to decide if you want yours like hers or if you want a more rectangular look. I prefer the look of Charmy's for an engagement ring, personally. Once you decide that, you maybe can eliminate some stones that way. Option 4 has good diameter and is larger in diameter than the 1.60. But I'd defer to Charmy about whether she thinks that stone is good enough. The table does look a little large to me.

Thanks for your reply diamondseeker :)

i like the square shape better as well so hopefully i can find that. I have excluded option 2 regardless because of the inclusion on the table.

i hope this thread gets her attention as id love to hear her input.

Well then I'd stick with the 1.60 because it has a better aset compared to the 1.67 and having an E colored stone will be nice!

the 1.6 is certainly a nice stone.

I'm curious to know how much difference the 2 aset's will mean in real life? does anyone have a tutorial with live examples of this?

Bumping this in hopes that Charmy will see it!

Hehe,

Thanks diamondseeker, i was planning to do that myself. :loopy:

Beautiful AVC, love the square shape and the small table, this stone is an absolute winner in my opinion.

If you look at the 1.60 and the 1.67 (the asets), you'll see more red on the 1.60 which means that stone is brighter compared to the 1.67 which means you'll get better light return with that stone. I should also add that the brightness is more even on the 1.60. The 1.67 has red in the center and has the X that is red but all the space in between is light leakage which means no light return.

Bumping because I see Charmy on Rocky Talky!

Sorry ... I haven't been on this week. I am about to board a plane so I will reply later.

I am going to see if I can find other options for you - what is your price range and other specs you are looking for?

To be honest, I am not really loving any of these options. I am pretty particular about my e-ring cushions in that I wanted a 1.0 ratio (perfect square), table had to be under 56%, depth not much more than 67% and of course the facet pattern.

#1 - This AVC is almost too perfect looking for me. I will just leave it at that ... I think this perfection would have appealed to me a few years ago but my tastes have changed over time. I have no basis for my thoughts but my gut tells me you aren't loving the AVC.

#2 - Out of all 4, this one is actuallymy favourite. The table is not too big. It is 1.04 so it is mostly square but for me I could tell the difference. Are you really picky for a perfect square?

#3 - I also like but not for 4K more than #2. I paid a premium in the past for a E and although I don't regret it ... I think in some lights ... it is almost too white. F/G is probably where I would go in the future.

#4 - This table is way too large! Iw ould pass.

This one is a rectangular stone but it might be worth looking at. Ask Mark if he can find it and also check if it is eyeclean. The cloud and feather positioning is a bit concerning.

Hi Charmy!

Thank you so much for your reply and so sorry for not answering earlier!

What can i say.. i have fallen in love with your ring and would give my right arm for something similar. i must have looked at hundreds of cushions and this is the one i keep going back to. so in other words...the more i can make the ring resemble this one the happier i will be.

after some consideration i agree with your preference on the square stone. but perhaps i can be slightly more flexible than you :)

i have budgeted around 15k for the stone but can probably stretch that to 17k if i find something spectacular.

Specs i'm after are:
Color G or better
SI1 or better
Approx 1.5 Ct

thank you for the link to the james allen diamond. i'll ask for an asset on this one even though it might be too rectangular.

another question... this james allen stone, to me it looks as if it has rounder corners than yours. Is that the case? If so, would this stone give a totally different appearance even though i would use a similar setting?

thank you so much for your help!

Not Charmy, but I love more cushiony, rounded corner cushions! Otherwise, you may as well get a square stone! That D VS1 is very gorgeous, but it is too rectangular for me.

hi,

thanks for all your input!

i have found a diamond with ratio 1.02 which is square enough for me. it's a 1.7 Ct F VS2 with nice dimensions as far as i can see.

i have attached some pictures below. what do you think of this stone? price is just under 16k

i can't upload the gia for some reason but ill try again later. in the meantime here are the details.

Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
FL: None
Dimensions: 7,38x7,23x4,66
Table: 55%
Depth:64,5%

It has some pretty significant leakage. See the white spots on the ASET? They are clearly showing black on the picture of the stone because the background is black.

hi diamondseeker,

yes i can see it. with the black background it's almost like a dark "X" is showing. this one was from chris at ERD and it seems as they are struggling to find more options. :(

This one is really nice. But for me personally it looks a little rounded. Depends on if you like the shape. It will probably square up once set. A little leakage is not a problem.

hello again,

i'm in contact with GOG and they don't have any 8 main facet moderns available but they say this stone will look very similar once in the setting. what your view on this one? http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/10233/

Charmy - any input on the 8 main i posted above? should i be concerned about the leakage?

thanks!

Have you considered asking Jon to do a video for you on the stones you are looking at to get an idea on how the stones perform and what your eyes are drawn too ? It might be worth it to at least rule out (or rule in) what you really want in your stone.

The F is much, much bigger than the D.

You aren't going to find the perfect option if you want to stick with a 8 main cushion brilliant. I think it is more important that you find a diamond that you love the look of. Perfect optics will only come with AVCs and Square H&A. Everything else is going to be just as good as you can.

For the new 8 main you found, I think the pics are nice but lots of leakage on the outer edge. The ASET also looks very strange - is this a digitally created ASET or a real ASET?

I haven't had time to dig and look around for you but I will try. It's not going to be easy to find one ... I haven't found a good one in many years. I have thought about selling my stone many times since I never wear that ring (literally been worn under 5 times). I always backed out for fear of never finding another one like it.

Thanks everyone for your input and help, its very appreciated.

i know the aset looks a bit weird but i have asked ERD for a proper one. They dont have the stone in stock right now but will have it shipped in.

Perfect light performance is not necessary, but the leakage in this stone looks quite prominent and almost creates an "X" in the center. perhaps this is not visible when its not magnified on a black background and in its setting?

such a shame that beauty is not getting more wear.. :(.. let me know if you decide to part way with it (even though i would assume you'd have plenty of interested buyers)

I would definitely call this one in...under $16k and faces up great...an 8 main cushion brilliant. ERD can call it in..here's the price from another vendor:

http://buydiamonddirect.com/details/detailGIA.asp?ITEM=42551085

Our Item Number Is 42551085
Price Is $ $15,712.95

IMO, if you set the rectangular stone E/W it will face up larger with more finger coverage and look more square:
