Charmypoo and others - Cushion help :)

thanks ariel!

this stone is unfortunately not still available. perhaps someone else saw it here and decided to take a closer look.

the supplier of the 8 main above, with the strange aset, have recommended me not to go with this stone because of the leakage. so basically back at square 1 again :(

any advice on where to turn to maximize my chances of finding a stone like this? if not possible.. what cushion type is the option that will look most similar?

Very hard to find the 8 mains these days. Too bad someone snatched up the rectangle one .. it had potential.

The next closest would be the square H&A but it comes with a premium.

I found a decent 8 main on ebay but it's only 1 ct.

This is a modified cushion brillant but I think it has potential - it looks a bit like the x factor in real life. It has been for sale for half a year so I think the seller might be willing to budge below 10K. See if you can get him to take better photos for you.

Hi Charmy,

Thanks for these links but to be honest i dont think i'm ready to buy a diamond on ebay yet. This is my first diamond purchase and it was a big step in deciding to go online in search for it but feel that the aset etc will give me the comfort i need in the purchase.

This is another stone i have found. what are your thoughts on this one?

Not Charmy, but I kind of like this one! Symmetry looks nice to me and so does the shape! ASET not bad.

the aset looks great!

thanks guys!

The aset is not as red as some others i have seen but it has a really nice symmetrical distribution which i like :)

I like this one too. Very pretty to the eye and the aset is fine for me. Do you have the gia cert?

hi charmy,

i have asked for the gia report so will hopefully recieve it soon. Ill post details as soon as i get it. it's a G VS1 and price is 15.5k.

I really like the shape of this stone.

for 15.5k, should i be expecting a better aset? (more red)

charmy,

you wouldn't happen to have the aset of your stone lying around that you can post? as a reference..

Cushion cut stones aren't cut for the same sort of brilliance you get from a round h&a. Unless you go with the brellia cut stones from GOG but those are uber expensive. example: http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/10059/ these stones perform the same way a round h&a do so they have similar aset/idealscope images. For a cushion, the above stone, IMO has a great aset image.

one more thing, something to compare your stone to:

they have pretty similar aset's. thanks for posting that :)

here is the gia cert of the stone.

That was the point ;)) I think it's a great stone!

what are your thoughts on the culet? i've not seen one in a modern cut before.

I used to hate culets but they don't bother me anymore. It will be hardly noticeable once set.

I think this is probably the closest you will come to what you are looking for ... at least in the near term.

How long can you wait? If you can't, go for it :)

I would like to find the diamonad as soon as possible. but at the same time i dont like the thought "this is as good as it gets now". I obviously want the best possible diamond for my girl but at the same time i think i will go nuts looking for something that i might not find.

i'm contemplating these 3 stones now:

1. the 8 main above ,price 15.5k

2. http://www.engagementringsdirect.com/1.60-carat-e-vs1-x-factor-cushion-cut-diamond-gid-115475.html ,price 16.8k

3. http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/10233/ ,price 13.8k

looking forward to hear what you guys think

The ERD and GOG one are very similar... almost the same size, I am inclined to go with the cheaper one between these two for a 3K difference.

A well-cut, thin 8-main vs a thin X factor type look very similar, I wouldn't bother exclusively searching for an 8 main when the look is so similar and the X modified style probably is more abundant by a factor in the hundreds...

bump

I'd stick with your #1 the 8 main for $15.5k. That's still my favorite and it face up larger than the other two stones.

#1 is by far my favourite. Is there a way for you to see it in person?

that will be hard since i'm in Australia :). the plan is to buy it and have it shipped to maytal for setting.

Can I suggest just having Steven Kirsch set it? It's going to be a lot easier since your stone is in NYC.

I have rings from Leon, Steven and Maytal. I highly recommend Leon or Steven.

I don't think Michael is taking more business but maybe you can try ... he is amazing. He is in New Zealand so a bit closer to you.

hi charmy,

besides the geographical advantage of doing it in NY, is there a big difference between Steven's & Leon's work compared to Maytal's?

does Leon do work on diamonds from all vendor? i remember reading somewhere that he for instance doesn't work with AVC's?

Below is for a halo ring:

I would say it is like an Audi compared to a BMW/Mercedes or even Porsche. Maytal's work is good and I don't want to sound like I am holding grudges but my first ring from her was completely not what we discussed and the workmanship was below expectations. I was shocked to see such workmanship from a highly recommended vendor. My remake (the halo) was far better in every way but I don't think a second try should have been needed. Maytal is really nice and easy to work with - I know she bent backwards to make me happy (but Steven Kirsch would do the same as well).

With that said, I find Leon/Steve's metal work and pave to be at a completely different level. The fluidity of the metal, the minimal metal showing for pave work, the polish, etc etc. I would not hesitate going to Victor Canera for a halo too - the work is just flawless.

I would consider Maytal if I was looking for a strict budget I needed to fit in. She is a bit cheaper but I would spend a little more.

Hi Charmy,

I have bought a stone now (went for an AVC in the end after taking my lady to an antíque jewlery store and she fell in love with the larger facets.

I will have the ring made by Steven K after your recommendations :). I wonder if you can post some of the instructions you sent to Maytal prior having your ring made. I have sent pictures to Steven but it would be great if you can come with some pointers as well.

Thanks a million times for your help!

Congrats! Do share which avc you got! I am not sure if you know but I also have an AVC.

Steven knows what he is doing so I don't think instructions are needed. Decide on your shank width and halo width. My shank is very thin and may be too thin for people. Mine is 1.5 mm and I think most opt for 1.8 mm which I think works. my hands are just small so I went thinner.

I watched Steven work on my ring today ... Super cool. Saw holes drilled in the band and diamond set. Don't know how they do it. I would go cross eyed.
