Can you help? Looking for pics for uncommon 3 stone proportions.

Hallo all! :))

I'd like to do an old fashioned 3 stone ring - the type where the sides were much larger than we commonly see nowadays.

I have 2 x .95ct diamonds, and I want to put a 1.4ct stone in the middle. Does anyone have anything like that, know of anything like that, have photos saved of anything like that?

This style was more common in older rings, but I'm pulling a blank on that nice antique jewelry store in San Francisco - does anyone know the one I mean? I found nothing at Doyle and Doyle, and if anyone can come up with anything, it would be hugely helpful! I'm thinking of getting a setting from CvB.

Thank you all!

Hi mrs-b, Is it Lang Antiques and Estate Jewellery on Sutter Street?
only been to San Fran once and they were closed! Remembered it due to the Street name as had family friends with that name!

Hope you find your inspiration photos.
Stay well and Safe, best wishes

I have almost that exact ratio.

.92 and .93, if I recall old mines and a 1.42 cushion, if I remember.

The diameter of a 1.4ct is about 7.2mm and a 0.95ct is about 6.3mm. So the ratio of the diameters is 1.14.

I've been making my way thru all the old OEC threads, and Demelza has a gorgeous three stone in this thread with a diameter ratio of about 1.20.

I adore this three-stone ring, elizat! Really elegant *and* a show-stopper!

FWIW I've been planning to re-set my ER with larger sides, and your ring has persuaded me to move forward with the project.

A big Thank you to mrs-b for this thread! Always timely, always fascinating!

Oh, you ladies! AWESOME! And yes - Langs!

@elizat - thank you so much - that gave me a great idea of how this would look. I love those proportions. I love my current 3 stone, but the sides are really used to emphasize the center stone. Now I'm looking for something more even in feel, more of a traditional look, while still showing some side gradation. So yours is perfect - thank you so much!

@prs - thank you! That's getting reeeeeally close! I love the look of it. I wish my stones were OEC, frankly, as that's my dream, but it's not gonna happen. But those proportions are just about spot on - so thank you!

@Rfisher -

Those proportions are PERFECT. There is .9mm between sides and center on the ring you posted, and.... .9mm between sides and center on my proposed ring! Ideally, I would have loved to have gotten to 1mm diff between sides and center, but it's the sheer similarity-with-slight-difference that makes this sort of 3 stone so appealing to me.

My setting will be low on the finger, 6 prongs on all three stones, heavily angled sides, platinum, and distinctly streamlined, with the head integrated smoothly into the band, rather than having the obvious step up apparent in the Eragem 3 stone. But from above, the proportions should look about the same, so I'm actually pretty thrilled with that! Thank you!

@Hounddog -

Is there any way I can see those photos? I can't get them to come up. Any way?

I really like the je ne sais quoi of a three stone with stones of closer proportions. There's less tendency to focus on *one* diamond, and they have, in my opinion, a more casual look. Love that.

Ooh, @mrs-b I’ve got you!!!

Always happy to revisit this ring! 3.20 center, 2.31 and 2.33 sides. I can’t get it out of my head and it’s been since last August that I tried it on. Sigh.

Wow, perspective is weird. I vaguely remember there were two rings—one was the little sister of the other with (slightly) smaller stones. Looking at the first couple of pics with my hand farther away I’m wondering if these are photos of both rings. Gah. I’m a terrible Pricescoper.

At any rate, the proportions are what you were looking for. I had never seen proportions like this on a three stone. My first thought was—“um, shouldn’t the side stones be smaller?”

And then I pretty much forgot about that because it was a damn wall of bling and I loved it. And since then I may or may not have been dreaming about three stones.

@Tonks - you are no end of help! Thank you so much!

I do think the first couple of photos are of a smaller ring than the next few. Also no way the center stone in the first couple of photos is 3.2ct, so I'm guessing you're right, and the photos are of 2 different rings, tho similar. Since my finger is, I suspect, larger than yours, I think my idea would look more like the first (ie smaller) ring - especially since my entire ctw would be 3.3ct - ergo probably smaller again. I also want to set the stones lower, and angle them much harder, so they curve more around my finger and look more band-like.

These photos give an excellent idea of proportion, and I appreciate it! I just love an old style 3 stone!!

ETA My sides will be a smidge smaller. These sides are 72% and mine will be 68% - not a huge difference, but ever so slightly noticeable in the finished ring. I think that will help the curve, also, which is what I'm looking for.

You’re so welcome!

I should have included my ring size for reference. I am probably a true 6, but I wear a 6.5 because my knuckle is bigger and tends to swell. Hopefully that helps for scale.

I cannot wait to see what you put together! All of your collection is stunning and I really admire how carefully you curate it.

This is my current project. When I can get to my jeweller it will be held together by something more durable than blu-tack.

Centre is .86 AVC, sides are .46 MRB.

I got one for you @mrs-b
This is Bennie from Victor Barbone. It’s a show stopped.

1.17/1.25/1.07

I just wish they use a much better OEC. If all three OECs are transitional, it will even be more magical.
