Can someone please explain what is driving this?

Hello All -

So, I have place an order for a custom ring but I am curious as to what is causing this "issue" that I have noticed. The stone in the link below is rated a "F" color and "VVS2" clarity so pretty high up there on the clarity scale. Can someone please help me understand what is making this stone look a bit "hazy" vs. others that are rated lower down the clarity scale? I am very confused with this.

I have even noticed this difference when comparing two stones that both have "no" fluorescence so I can rule that out as the driver of this.

Example of a stone that is a SI1 but appears to be "more clear" than the VVS2 above (eventhough there are clearly more visible inclusions): https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/oval-cut/1.71-carat-e-color-si1-clarity-sku-835909

Thank you for the help!

Regards!

I suspect the F VV2 looks hazy because of strong fluo.

I have even noticed this difference when comparing two stones that both have "no" fluorescence so I can rule that out as the driver of this.

Beside fluo, some type of inclusions can make a diamond look hazy, notably cloud inclusions at SI2 and SI1, even VS2 as discussed a few times in this forum.

Here is what WF has to say about cloud inclusions

Thank you.

So, what could cause a stone to appear "hazy" if there is "no" fluorescence then (per the GIA Certificate)? As is the case for one stone that I was previously viewing.

The only inclusions were minor twinning wisps across the table (almost undetectable with a 10x loupe).

If you provide the link to the diamond, more expert members may be able to provide you with an answer.

If you are looking at stones at Jame Allen, some stones just need some GOOD CLEANING.

It could be dirty. Also, GIA doesn't take into account transparency. So the stone's inclusion types could make a diamond hazy.

Multiple sources have reported a massive dump of rough with micro-inclusions over the last few months. some will go clouds not shown but not all and they can and will suffer from scatter. They may grade up to vs range when cut and have issues with transparency.

Might it just be a different photog set up? If you are really interested in that stone you might question JA about it and why
it looks different from the other one.

Yeah, I also think it might be the photography. That is a gorgeous oval! I am very picky and it is one I'd order to see in person.
