Settings are not an after thought., What you need to know.




"Pave is the setting that you saw with the little stones set 'onto' the metal- there are little beads holding them to the metal, but like diamondlil said- you only really notice them on magnification. Think of a paved road and the diamonds are pushed into the pavement.

The slightly larger stones set in the channel...thoses are probably melee stones that are channel set. Melee is a term for very small stones from 1 point (0.01) and up- at least I believe that is where the size starts. They are very commonly used in either a channel setting or in a prong/sharedprong setting- often in eternity bands. "

Channel set is on the left--stones set next to each other, held in place by a "channel" of gold.

Bezel is on the right--a stone (or stones in sequence) surrounded by a "ring" of gold. The metal can be very wide or very thin or somewhere in between.

Pave has beads of metal that act as the prong. This may be the confusing point.






Channel settings work on the same principle as most bezel settings - the sides of the setting sort of fence in the stones. Jennifer's pics show this well.




Caution - a few bezels i've seen still use prongs because the bezel is for appearance and doesn't actually hold the diamond in place. Most bezels do replace prongs though
