Best way to sell a brand new platinum cushion halo setting??

I just redid my engagement setting and truth be told I just don't LOVE it. It's a platinum cushion halo with pave for my round diamond, although I am guessing a cushion stone would work in the setting as well. I had a gut feeling the ring was not going to be what I wanted and I actually had told me to hold off but I was required to pay the entire amount up front and it was nonrefundable! It's not a bad setting, I have just decided I would prefer the Emilya and a round halo. How do I go about selling my 10 day old setting??? I am so upset I didn't go with victor from the beginning but I was nervous about dealing with someone on the other side of the country. Thank for any advice!

Your ring looks beautiful, but I can understand wanting to go with Victor! You can list your setting on LoupeTroop or DiamondBistro and then after you list it, you can make a thread in the Pre-loved forum here. Be realistic and understand that you will lose some money on it. You need to give the specs on the setting, ring size, center stone size, who made it, and asking price. Then you'll just have to see what kind of offers you get.

Thanks. I was not planning to sell the center stone, just the setting. Is that common? Also since it is literally brand new I have the new appraisal and receipt for just the setting costs. I just wondered if it was something that was really doable and realizing I will take a loss, I would still be able to recover some money.

Re: Best way to sell a brand new platinum cushion halo setti

Of course it's doable. Gold, diamonds and platinum are all world commodities. It's just a question of how much of a loss you're going to have to take. The issue is the money. 10 days into the deal, I would start with the person who sold it to you. Do they have a policy that allows for returns or exchanges for something else? (Some stores will allow you to 'upgrade' to something completely different, like a watch that may suit your fancy)

Re: Best way to sell a brand new platinum cushion halo setti

If it's a custom ring, and those don't allow exchanges for 'change of mind' and I understand that. ... you can sell it yourself. You'll probably only recover half of the money you spent, but that's the nature of re-selling settings.

Re: Best way to sell a brand new platinum cushion halo setti

If you are going with Victor for the new setting, maybe you can ask him if he will scrap the ring and reduce the price of the Emilya setting you want by the scrap value? You will take a bath on this but no less than if you are selling by yourself privately. Just a thought.

Re: Best way to sell a brand new platinum cushion halo setti

When I sold my first setting after making a similar upgrade/change after just a couple of months I sent it Grace (Jewels by Erica Grace) and she put a "place holder" in it and it did sell through them.

Re: Best way to sell a brand new platinum cushion halo setti

Willydiamond, I love the halo setting in your pic! Who did that setting? I realize I am going to loose at least half of my just occurred cost on this new setting if I sell it....It doesn't have to be Victors, I just don't know if the end result I have currently is truly what I dreamed it would be. I love the coverage and halo, but somehow this big squarish cushion shape seems like a big disc on my hand... More modern. I also like the ring from afar, the illusion of a cushion, but when I look close I don't know....

Also I have not looked at Erica Grace, can you show me your ring Mayk? Is it a halo? What did you dislike about your earlier setting?

Re: Best way to sell a brand new platinum cushion halo setti

Mayk, you make me feel so much better! Do you have a solitaire now? Ok so checked out JBEG and wow....I also have a previously owned Brian Gavin Sara halo that I love! However not sure I think it will fit my smaller stone. I think it may have belonged to a person on here?... Anyway if I could sell my setting and go with a preowned I loved...win?

Re: Best way to sell a brand new platinum cushion halo setti

I do now have a solitaire. I got a BGB from JbEG. Preloved from a PSer! :naughty:

Mayk, gorgeous ring! Beautiful. I meant to type that I SAW a previously owned BG halo on JPEG. Not that I owned one! Not yet! So was the process of buying from them and selling your old own a good experience?

Re: Best way to sell a brand new platinum cushion halo setti

I would be better to sell the ring vs. getting scrap. If you sell for scrap you are pretty much taking a 70-80% loss. If you sell the setting you can at least hopefully recover half of what you spent.

Halos are typically easy for resell. Someone (especially into colored stones) will buy if it the price was right. Would you want to keep it nad perhaps but a colored stone in there? If not I would list it on LT and DB. See what other settings are going for.

Agree with you, but it will be done fast

Erica and Grace are fabulous! I've done buying and selling with them.

Willydiamond, I love your wife's ring. Is it the Ada style on ERD? I wish I had gone with another vendor but if I can make back half the money and get what I love at a decent price I think would be happier long term. I last rest this ring 7 years ago...so I doubt I can do it again and I don't know what else I would do besides the halo. Is ERD cheaper then VC ?

Re: Best way to sell a brand new platinum cushion halo setti

List on LoupeTroop and DiamondBistro and then post pictures and links on the Pre-loved forum here! Definitely try to sell yourself first and avoid losing even more from the commission! That is how you'll get the most for the setting. Second will be consignment and worst of all is selling for scrap (which would be nuts for a brand new setting!).

Hi Rockredo,
I am not sure what it is called. Momhappy and I have the same ring. You can call or email Chris at ERD and he will know off the top of his head. And yes, the cost at ERD vs. VC was significantly lower. I have never seen a VC halo in person so I cannot compare. His stuff is beautiful, but then again so is ERD. Perhaps ERD will be a good option if you do not recover what you want from your current setting. Best of luck and let me know if you have anymore questions.

Rockredo,
ERD does a CAST/ CAD version of this halo. VC does a hand forged version. They are both based off the Harry Winston "The One" halo. Hand forged is always more expensive then CAST/CAD. ERD happens to do both so it is nice to get options from them. I had a 2ct RB in a round Emilya, while my neighbor has a 1.9ct RB in a round ERD CAST version. Honestly I have scrunitized both rings together more then I care to admit. Unless you really know what you are looking for both rings look pretty identical. It hurts a little to realize that mine costs much more then hers so you can't really tell the difference. However, there is something I like about having a hand forged ring. however, if you are more budget friendly or honestly just don't care about the difference then I would check into ERD. They have been making HW inspired halos for a long time and have excellent customer service. They fall between 2-4k for a HW inspired setting while VC is 4-6k. It really just depends what you want. I have seen both and can say you can't really tell the difference. Both are works of art.

Re: Best way to sell a brand new platinum cushion halo setti

SB621,

Thanks for this honestly and information. I truly appreciate it. Given that I am only thinking of changing it because a few things bug me, I cannot justify spending a boat load of money, again! My new setting was in the same price range, was custom, and I do think it's well done....I have changed my mind about what I truly want. Your ring must be spectacular!

Re: Best way to sell a brand new platinum cushion halo setti

Rock--

After I answered your post I looked at the ERD website at the ADA style and my wife's ring is not that, but its close. My wife's ring has diamonds on the shank not all the around the ring but only to the 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock on the other side, not on the bottom of the ring. I didn't want pave on the bottom of the ring because as my wife puts her hand down on tables, etc I thought that the pave would loosen and come out, just my opinion. Also my wife's ring does not have pave on the part between the shank and the halo, I think that is called the cathedral, but I am not sure. I did not want diamonds in that spot because you just don't really see them, unless you turn the ring sideways, I guess just a personal taste. I had been looking for ideas for a while and also had a budget in mind and when I saw Momhappy's ring, I knew that was it and the pricing from Chris was within my budget.

Edit: One more point. When I picked the ring up at the Fedex Depot, and unwrapped all the boxing and packing and finally opened the ring box, I let out a loud "wow". Well, the FEDEX lady who was working there asked me if I was OK, so I walked over to her and showed her the ring, and she let out a loud "wow".

Re: Best way to sell a brand new platinum cushion halo setti

Willydiamond, I truly value your input. I already emailed Chris at ERD. I wish I had done all my research before just pulling the trigger, but lesson learned! I think my setting is very pretty, just not exactly what I realize I want. I agree with the pave in the band...and I was also already thinking that about the donut ...since I hope to wear my thin wedding band with it. Does your wife? I also realize I actually don't mind a little gap, I sort of like that the band sits just below. Your wife's diamond is a bit bigger but I have a 1.3. Does the diamond look much larger with her halo?

Yes, wife does wear the wedding band with the ER, see my pics in the thread
There is a little gap between the ER and the wedding band, she likes that.
Yes, it does look bigger with the halo because naturally the halo is surrounding the diamond. ERD picked very appropriate pave to use. I like how there is no "airline" between the pave and the center stone. Best of luck and keep us informed.

Re: Best way to sell a brand new platinum cushion halo setti

Already heard back from ERD! So nice and helpful. Even willing to work with me on costs. I think the positive Pricescope referral is invaluable. I am talking with Chris and going to decide if I want to redo and sell my current setting. I think it will sell and quite honestly it's just that I like another style, not a reflection of the workmanship. I even asked Chris at ERD to give me his honest opinion on the whole situation. Thanks again!

Sb621, your post was super helpful as well. I thank you for being so honest and sharing your experience. I am actually pretty excited there maybe an outcome that will cost me, but not kill me if I do redo it.

Re: Best way to sell a brand new platinum cushion halo setti

RockRedo... do you think they could keep costs down by reusing perhaps the diamonds in your band if a resale isn't plausible?

Re: Best way to sell a brand new platinum cushion halo setti

I just scanned these threads, but didn't you say you told the jeweler that the wax casting looked "too square" and the jeweler said essentially "the actual ring will look more rounded? And this ring is SQUARE, after you told the jeweler to change it? Isn't that ring not as-ordered and also still within a return or refund period? On a credit card? Do a reversal and fire it back, if the maker didn't follow instructions.

Re: Best way to sell a brand new platinum cushion halo setti

It says all sales final on my receipt and I was required to pay in full when I ordered the ring. I also emailed him during the process saying I wanted to hold off, I was too anxious not being able to see the ring and he then said he would make a mold. I saw the mold and said I was worried about it looking square and he said it would not be square. I honestly feel intimidated to go back again but I am going to email him and go in his week to discuss. I did pay with a credit card, but the payment happened when I ordered it 9/20. I feel like I am so discouraged I just want to start over with a new talented person!

Re: Best way to sell a brand new platinum cushion halo setti

Sb621,

Did you have the donut Emilya? Diamond on the donut or plain? I am working with ERD and I am trying to keep in mind what you said about being so similar to Victors. The price is in my budget if I sell my new setting. I am trying to decide about wearing my band with it, it's a tiny pave band on 3 sides, shouldn't touch another ring anyway!
