Beauty In Large Size?

Thank you so much DiamondSeeker! Those are lovely. Are they "4 Main" cushions? I clearly need to read about cushions on GOG website.
I think I remember someone speaking about "8 Main" cushions, but I don't know the difference. I would appreciate any help.

In that size, I would get a VS F/G in simple setting that shows off the center stone. I haven't tried one but I have a feeling that I'd enjoy seeing the facet patterns of AVR. Emerald and cushion would also look great I think. My all time favorite is actually RB but it's common so I'd prefer something different if I could get a 5 ct.

Yes!! This is what I would get as well, it is just gorgeous and I love it - so flattering and IMO very elegant!

This week I had a magical hour at Harry Winston where I got to try on - and take pictures of! - lots of big rocks. I am also a size 7. I have pics of a 5 carat emerald cut and a 6 carat radiant on my hand that might be helpful. They are on my iPhone and I'm out of town until Friday but I'll post them when I'm back at my computer (unless someone can link me to instructions on posting pics from iPhone? I'm embarrassed to say I can't figure it out!).

Personally, I'd go for an antique or antique style (like the August Vintage cushion and rounds) because they are magnificent in larger sizes. I'd also do a pretty simple setting without a halo but with some elegant details (tiny bezel and beautiful basket maybe?).

I can't wait to see the finished product!

My fiance tried on a 5 ct. stone. That $hit looked SO SUPER fake. The faceting was all drab looking, nothing. No character. Costume jewelry appearance almost. At that size, many cut for weight rather than beauty (in MRB, I could be wrong) so finding one that has the size AND the proper quality, ideal cut will set you back your first 7 children, although you may only have 2... plus your right kidney, half of your frontal lobe, your spleen, and your liver. :naughty:

So I have yet to see a super ideal large (4-5+ ct) RB. I've seen a 3 ct that was super boring. :blackeye: ;( :(sad :(sad :(sad :(sad :(sad

You are so right! The price will set me back many, many pennies! If I purchase a round, it will be an XXX. I need to research cushions some more.

I agree that some diamonds are cut for the weight, and not for the overall beauty.

Diamondseeker, Greenbling, junebug, and Rosebloom,

Thank you for the links and replies!

Rosebloom, I would love to see your pictures. I am of no help posting them, since I am technology challenged!

I have size 8 finger, and my experience with colored stones is, anything beyond 12mm round (or cushion) looks a bit weird. Since diamonds have more brilliance and fire than colored stones, I think a smaller size (like 11mm) will achieve a similar look. 11mm translates to 4.75ct roughly. Also, in such large size, I personally prefer a non-round brilliant cut. Antique cushion, OMC, OEC, emerald,... all can be very nice.

Hello Cookie,

The round diamonds that I have been considering are 11mm to just under 12mm. Hardly anyone who has responded seems to like round brilliants above 4 or 5 carats. I should have started this thread sooner.

Rectangles - Yes!! Not rounds. I don't like large carat diamonds of round shape.

There are a few ladies here with 3 stone rings with large centers and those are quite beautiful to me. Mom2boys has a 3 ct. center and half carat sides. For some reason I just like that better than a single 5 carat round. I'd go with cushion or emerald cut for that size. But only in my dreams!

There are some ladies on PS that have larger RB's. Someone mentioned Diamontebleu (she has I seem to recall a 6ct RB AND an equally large EC). Sparkles has an amazing 5ct ACA and I've had the pleasure of seeing that beauty in person, it's absolutely mesmerizing!! LVnut has a 4ct RB.

I am also in the process of acquiring a 5ct. I do love most shapes and am particularly partial to both RB's and EC's, and have a hard time deciding between the two. Where I live, I've seen quite a few large RB's and the ladies who wear them pull them off very well. An acquaintance has a 5ct AND an 8ct, both RB's. Most likely, I'd end up with a RB.

Great, I'll post the pics by the weekend. Also, I should add that while I've seen several fancy shaped diamonds in this size I haven't ever seen a MRB of 5 carats+. I'm sure it would be spectacular!

I'm shopping in this size now and on my size 8 finger I don't think it looks too large at all... then again, I've been wearing a 2ct halo'd stone for years so maybe shrinkage has set in. I've tried on MRB in the 4.5-6.5 ct range and think they look...amazing. I have no interest in a halo or complicated setting. Step cuts, pears, and marquise are out for me (just preference) and I haven't see any cushions or radiants that really wow me. While I WANT to find an antique stone, there are just so so so many more options with RB. I also fear I might get bored with the old cuts. (and hey... nothing says I can't recut an ideal MRB into a more antique cut later on)

I don't think they lose anything in large sizes. For me though my only worry would be how it would look on my finger and what the setting was like. I do love cushions and they do face up smaller so that might be more proportional for your finger size. Is there a way you can look at both shapes at once to determine what you like better on your finger. Do you have a setting in mind? Go through the 3+ carat thread as I believe there are a few in that size range which might help you.

Clearly this doesn't meet your 6+ carats, but this would be my choice - i'm biased though, i love antique cuts and like someone else already said in this thread the unique faceting just shows up so much better in large stones!

Thank you for all the responses! Everyone is so kind to help me!

I went to sleep thinking that I would change my preference to a cushion or maybe another shape besides a round brilliant. However, I woke up still thinking that a RBC would face up the largest and have the most sparkle. I love antique settings, and saw a beautiful one on Lang's website. I think with such a large diameter it may look ridiculous with a halo even though I mentioned a cushion halo earlier in the thread.

SarahBear, I don't think I will be able to see a large RBC and cushion together until later this Fall.

Someone mentioned that cushions face up small. I think that has been in the back of my mind all along. I love the cushion rings of the ladies on Pricescope, but I think deep down I am afraid it will look small on my finger.

I think I will feel more sure of my choice when I see a setting for a RBC that I can visualize on me. I hope that makes sense! :wink2:

Hello Lovebug,

I am love antique settings and antique stones! The one you posted is a beauty!

I see myself owning an antique cut later on. One of our jewelers specializes in estate jewelry, which is unique and a bargain compared to new!

That 5 carat ACA looks huge but she has tiny fingers. If you don't already have it bookmarked, you might like playing around with the carat weight v. finger size chart.

For example, I've always loved the look of Sna77 wife's ring. Lots of real life pictures about two thirds down the first page of this link:

She's a size 3.5 and the diamond is a few points shy of 2.4 ct. Using my favorite PS tool (link below), I know that on my (and your!) size 7 finger, I would need a 4 carat round to achieve the same look.

I love this chart and thought it might be fun for you before you get a chance to try stuff on.

That beauty is in another man's hands at the moment.....and he's driving me crazy......making me wait......

Life's too short... rock what you wanna rock...halo what you wanna halo.

At the end of the day it comes down to personality. Whilst a 7ct EC three stone is the epitome of elegance........I have the energy of a freight train...so looking into an EC everyday.......I'd be saying .......where's the excitement.....

I would, however, roll phoenix in a dark alley for her pear.......

Do you mean you are having the stone reset?

Canuk-Girl,

YES! The ACA is beautiful and doesn't seem too large. I think her finger size is only a 4.25, and mine is a 7is (it's my knuckle). A 6ct RBC shouldn't overwhelm my finger. Plus, I am going to be picky and get an XXX GIA diamond! I will go visit in person before any funds are transferred too.

Thank You for posting the link!

Vintagelover,

You are so kind to think of me when you saw the ring! It is beautiful! I do love it!

I'm perusing custom ring maker sites right now. I love classic and old though.
