Beauty In Large Size?

I would love to know your thoughts on whether RBCs are still beautiful in sizes above 6 carats?

I also like cushion cuts, but I keep veering back to the brilliancy of RBCs. My concern is whether RBCs lose their beauty in a larger carat size. I really value your opinions. =)

Thank You!

Thank you for your reply. I AM ABSOLUTELY SERIOUS!

Pricescopers have more experience than I do. I really want to know what your opinions are. I have heard some people say they think RBCs above 4 carats begin to lose their beauty.

I would like your opinions, that is why I posted.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you love a 6 carat round, go for it. I know some would prefer a fancy cut like an emerald or a true antique in that size, because the faceting is so visible in the larger sizes.

I have searched through countless threads in an effort to help me make a decision. I am confused, and would appreciate people chiming in!

Oh, I think RB's in any size are really beautiful, it's my favorite shape! I don't think size detracts from their beauty at all...but, that said, I think that for me a 6+ carat RB would look a little out of proportion on my hand (not that I'll ever have to worry about that problem IRL!) - BUT I am also a firm believer in getting whatever it is you truly love and is a good fit, so I think it boils down to personal preference and style.

If I were ever lucky enough to get such a large size stone, I'd probably go with a cushion just due to personal preference. I just love the shape and and faceting at that larger size and think it's a very flattering look on the hand. (will never happen but it's fun to dream :cheeky: ) But if it's a round brilliant that truly makes your heart sing, go for it!

Thank You RubyBeth!

I love emerald cuts on other people's hands. I have never owned an emerald cut, but I think they are classic. Your thoughts about having another shape besides RBC in a larger size is what I am wondering too.

I really appreciate your thoughts!

Thank You junebug17 for your reply!

I have looked at cushion cuts using the diamond search function. It seems that cushions above 6 carats are harder to find. I would love a slightly rectangular cushion, but then I go back to what I feel is "safe" ...RBC.

I never thought I would be able to have a large diamond either. I am blessed, and I don't take it for granted!

Thank you for your advice!

No, I do not care for RBs in bigger than a 2.5 to 3 carat. I think the round shape is not as flattering in such a large size. It just tends to look like a big orb IMO. For bigger sizes, I like rectangular shaped stones.

HI:

Are you in the market for a large stone or is this question academic  ? What shapes have you tried on? What size is your finger?

cheers--Sharon

Hello canuk-gal,

I am going to purchase! I am starting to get nervous though, hence this thread! I want to make sure I am doing the right thing.

My finger size is 7ish. I can "pull off" larger carat diamonds without them looking ridiculous. I am just concerned about the shape.

I have seen some large RBCs that look like orbs as Laila619 said. I wish I could recall the carat weight, maybe about 10cts?

Oops! I forgot to answer part of Canuk-gal's question. I have tried on asschers, emeralds, radiants, and smaller cushions. The jewelry stores had 2ct cushions, so I really could not get a good feel for them.

Lady, if you want a huge round brilliant, go get it! And then come back and post pictures because I'm sure we could put your mind at ease about its beauty.

Have you been able to try on any large size stones? I think your feelings will be clarified once you do. At least, mine always are!

(But if I had to get a six carat stone, I'd do an asscher. I LOVE them, but you can barely see what's going on in the size of one I might be able to actually afford.)

HaHa!

I am mesmerized by asschers. I always stop to admire them, but I wonder if I would be diligent about keeping it clean. I have been told that asschers and emeralds need at least weekly cleaning. I appreciate your thoughts!

I'm not sure that I would want such a large RB but I do think that large step cuts are gorgeous!! Unfortunately my asscher was only 1 ct, and it did require regular cleaning, but so do my RB and marquis. I actually think that my RB requires more but maybe just because I find myself wearing it more often than I did the asscher....

I found a thread that DiamanteBlu started about upgrading her ring. There are sooooo many beautiful rings from her shopping trip in that thread. I believe she owned a 6+carat RBC. I don't know if she is an active member, but I would love to know her thoughts too.

Our responses our only going to be what's right for US, personally. I don't like RB's in any size outside of 50 pointers for 5 stone bands FOR MYSELF. On others I think they are nice up to 4 carats. Over 4 carats I prefer other shapes-- primary cushions and step cuts.

HI:

Before I bought my current ER, I tried on 7-10 ctw. cushions and asschers. TOO BIG in a diamond. Colored stone--skies the limit!
Recently tried on a 6 ctw RB--just not my style.

I prefer emerald cuts or pears and nicely cut radiants in larger sizes. Even a marquise would suit. But that is just me.

cheers--Sharon

I prefer fancy shapes over 3 cts. It's not that a large round loses much of its beauty, but the fancies get more beautiful as they get bigger.

Thank You Christina and Gypsy,

I am beginning to think that I need to slow down and consider cushions more seriously. There are so many tools for evaluating RBCs online in order to narrow down diamonds. I guess that is partly why I felt "safe" with a RBC.

JulieN,

Thank you for weighing in. Most people seem to feel the way you do. I definitely need to think about this more carefully. I want to have fun, but I am nervous I am going to make one gigantic mistake!

I think it's all relative.
If in your world half a carat is usual, then 1 ct looks huge and 2 ct looks obscene.

There are people for whom a 6 ct is a small diamond.

Hi ClassyRocks,
I have size 6 ring fingers and tried on a 5ct RB a few times. I think it looked great! Maybe if you were buying a RB that would extend past the sides of your finger, it might look odd, like a doorknob.
If you love the round, buy it. If you love the cushion, buy it. The lovely people here will help you either way if you need shape specific advice.

You are so right Kenny!

I felt guilty asking for opinions, like I might be judged. I have been burned already, and that is how I found Pricescope. I really appreciate all the education Pricescope and the members provide.

JaneSmith,

Honestly, I always dreamed of fancy shapes. I never seriously considered a round diamond for a ring. However, I have begun to appreciate the brilliancy of the RBC, and that I why I have been looking at that shape. I don't think it will overhang my finger on the sides. I think I really need to reconsider a cushion shape though. Confused.....

Thank You!

ANOTHER QUESTION!

Do you like squarish or rectangular shaped cushions? I think I would halo it.

Please help!

I think a rectangular shaped cushion in a halo is beautiful and very flattering. The rectangle shape tends to make the fingers look longer and slimmer IMO.

Laila619, thank you so much for the link. I have admired her ring too! I like everything about it!

I actually thought about putting a RBC in a cushion halo, but I don't know if it would produce as nice of an overall ring as KristyDarling's.
