Are there no protections in any of the new laws passed by Congress? If antibody testing proves covid19 will you have any protection?

If antibody is positive, he will be protected. If negative, we are in for a fight.

This is a terrible situation.

It truly is. He is on unpaid leave effective now. Already used all of his vacation and sick time. The company sent a case to the insurance company that handles short term disability. If the doctor will agree to fill out a form and if the insurance company agrees it is a valid reason to be out, then he will get paid (I think full pay) for up to 6 months.

My anxiety is taking all I have to keep under control. Last time he was super sick (unable to use hands, barely able to sit/stand, in constant severe pain, etc), we had several specialists running every test they could manage all certify he was in no condition to work with any level of accomodations. (Spinal guy, neurologist, GP, and president of the state chiropractic association) The insurance declined because they (the three nurses who reviewed the documents) decided there was no reason he couldn't work. Appealed every which way but ended up with 6 months out with no pay.

DH and I are both heading in for antibody testing. His manager (and 2nd line manager) are being disgusting about this. He has been told to work with HR to get on short term disability and if he can't get it back to March, his evaluation will be based on him not working. (Which standard action is mandatory performance plan in preparation of firing.)

I'm so, so sorry to hear this. That's disgusting. Employers have way too much power here.

Reporting from France. Went for my weekly food shopping at my small usually uncrowded shop in the next town over, and was one of only four people in a mask aside from shop employees. The place was packed. People chatting in groups, no social distancing.
Also, the tourists are back, no masks, no social distancing. So disrespectful to the locals who have been so careful; a vulnerable older population.
I thought I lived in a sane place. I will definitely be staying at home another two weeks to see what happens then. And maybe two weeks after that. Or all summer.
Just a little surprised at how quickly things have changed. What are people thinking?!
How is it where you guys are??

I am thinking people are going crazy and losing it. Same thing happening here. (Almost) No one is wearing masks outside and so far the stores in NJ require mask wearing but that is the only place. And beaches are reopening today! I am not happy at all about this. We are returning too quickly and reopening too fast and I fear (some of us) we are going to pay the (ultimate) price.

I agree it is a sign of disrespect when people refuse to wear masks to protect others. And as for tourists shame on them. That is insult upon injury. I cannot believe tourists are coming to France already @Jimmianne :( Please stay safe.

Have you guys reopened @missy?

I feel like I've lost a chunk of time! Our media hasn't reported much on it so I've no idea what you guys are up to!

Here in Australia we are admittedly far below most of the world with regards to comps infections rates, and the decision was made long ago for schools to do remote learning for all of term 2. Our state has suddenly flipped and decided to send students back in less than 2 weeks. I'm beside myself, I think it's too early. I'll be keeping my kids at home until term 3.

What state are you in @Dandi ?

We're still one day a week in NSW. I hear rumblings of them going back for a full week by end of May.

I don't know what to say other than that I hope and pray the antibody tests work out. You and your husband have done everything right. You have done all the footwork. What you are facing is just formidable. I am on your side; you are in my thoughts and prayers.

We are in Victoria. In the last week we have had 2 clusters of infections (80ish and 20ish) cases, I think the timing for reopening schools stinks. I'm incredibly anxious.

Is school definitely starting in two weeks?

I'm really surprised as your Premier was the most cautious out of all of them!

We are doing (according to some of the mayors) a "soft" reopening in NJ. Some of the beaches reopening for a week starting today to see what happens. In a week I don't think anyone can draw a conclusion and by Memorial Day all the beaches here are supposedly reopening. :errrr:

That sounds crazy too. Why? What are they thinking???

I know, I'm so surprised! I think he just caved to pressure from people who want their kids back at school. Preps, grade 1 and grade and 2 will be back for a week, then the rest will follow. I'm disappointed. I don't see the point when school holidays are only weeks away. How are you going in NSW?

Public pressure I think, people just want and need their kids back at school so they can work. I do understand, they are trying to find a balance between protecting health and supporting the economy. I'm just dreading the consequences.

Missy, my village is a summer resort. If I recall correctly we get 30,000 visiters. Lots of English, whom I do not think can come in yet, but many French leave the cities to weekend here. I think they are the ones here now.

Seems like people are doing this everywhere, celebrating the open. Not too smart.

The same thing is happening here. Politicians are giving in to public pressure. I hope Governor Cuomo and Governor Murphy hold their ground otherwise the consequences will be dire.

@Dandi I think you have the right idea and you have to do what is right for your family. Sending you bucketloads of well wishes across the miles.

Oh dear well they should know better! I mean I don't expect much from Americans :( but I do expect more from the French!

Thank you @missy, you too, lovely. I'm surprised at how much resistance I've met from others regarding keeping my kids home when others are at school. But I'm sticking to my guns.

For what it's worth, which is not much, I agree with missy. I think you are taking good care of your family in the face of popular opinion that runs contrary to what you believe to be right. I think you are very strong to do that. No one likes to go against what his neighbors are doing.

We're ok. Let's just say I tend to be a bit more of a risk taker so I'm fine with where we're sitting.

I would prefer to home school but that's because I think it's more efficient for our family, not covid19 related at all. I will send him back when they mandate that we are to send him back.

I'm obsessed with the suburb tracker and have been tracking cases in each surrounding suburb that I've visited. None have recorded any cases in 2-3 weeks.

On the whole I would say this is the most I can feel comfortable about the disease (if one can even call it comfortable). I'm cautious of a second wave but I think we (Australia) can deal with it.

Apparently ScoMo ordered the whole inflammation thing in children to be looked at but they still don't think it's a risk. I like the nice health man Brendan Murphy so I'm cool with his advice.

They probably feel guilty for sending their kids back so want you to do it too. Makes their decision more justifiable for THEM. I'm sure they have good reasons for sending their kids back but often I find some people really need you to conform to make them feel ok about themselves.

I know quite a few families (TX and WA) who will homeschool rather than send kids back. Possibly even next school year if things aren't safe enough for their comfort. If I had kids in school, I would do the same! I'm sorry people are giving you a hard time.

We will be homeschooling if they open the schools too soon. They’re talking about staggering start times and having the class size reduced, but none of these will keep my child out of a confined space with someone who is possibly infected.

Here is a map of a real restaurant that shows how a cluster was created by one infected person. Nine people were infected in the time it took to eat dinner. The air conditioner blew the virus around the room.

Classrooms are far more confined than this restaurant example. Class is at least an hour. We have AC running constantly. I don’t see how having children return to school will be safe at all.

We already paid for our son's school in full or else I would homeschool in a heartbeat. I am trying to find a way to tell my husband that I don't want to send our son back. I probably should look into trying to get refunded but I am pretty sure it isn't possible. I literally paid the week the news started about China and the virus. It's not like we can't afford to let the money go but my husband is not on board with just throwing money away. Sigh.

School is done here. In general would have been having graduations right now. They'll worry about next school year in July. School starts August here so I guess its a wait and see.

Today we're getting Gale warnings/winds I think the storm thats just immediately south is going to end up with a name at some point.

Ask about a refund! Lots of places that don't usually are doing them right now. Better to have happy customers who come back when they feel safe than resentful customers...

Just had a quick look at the news. Apparently our R rate in the UK is rising again towards 1, so that is a bit concerning coupled with the overcrowding on public transport and easing of lockdown/ schools opening etc. Also the weather is set to warm up here again and I think plenty of people will be out and about. I just hope they are sensible and adhere to social distancing.
I have to say though where i live most people seem to be pretty sensible. I was in the supermarket yesterday and some carnival music came on the radio so we did a 'social distancing' conga down the aisle which was good fun! The staff joined in!
