An OEC sight unseen - possible?

The stone is gorgeous! It appears to be well cut. I’d pull the trigger.

@joelly OECs have smaller tables tham MRBs. They have to have smaller tables to achieve that gorgeous, chunky facet pattern. So in order to get the small table the crown has to extend further upwards. This automatically means a well cut OEC will weigh a little more than an MRB with the same spread.

The trick is to make sure the OEC doesn't have weight hidden in a too deep pavilion. Not only will a deep pavilion angle hide weight, it will also significantly reduce the light return. I am beginning to think it is by far the most important angle in any round diamond.

this is so complicated. Who can help me irl if I can’t rely on my own eyes? :(

:???: Paralyzed....

Rely on your eyes over everything else, don't get hung up on the numbers and splitting hairs here. Well cut old cuts aren't as common as well cut MRBs.
Not one person has said "hmm looks wierd, don't buy it". You've got feedback from a lot of people who know their old cuts and are saying it looks great. At the very least get it and review it in person. Don't let it pass you by.
I'd buy it in a heartbeat if I had spare cash.

Love the flowery facet pattern. What do your eyes tell?

It looks really good, but you won't really know if it's the stone for YOU until you get to see it in person. I don't think it's unreasonable to ask to arrange seeing it. Our current social situation might cause some difficulty, but surely there's some way?
I can see why you feel paralyzed, but he's probably feeling some economic pinch too, so might surprise you what he'd be willing to do to make the sale.

That is a beautifully faceted stone! :kiss2: Absolutely worth taking a look in-person. One other thing I’d suggest evaluating carefully though is the girdle - it is extremely thin to very thin. While that wouldn’t dissuade me from a gorgeous OEC , I wouldn’t feel very comfortable with a four (even double) prong setting long-term. If the stone moves you and you’re in love, I’d inquire if there are any other setting options the seller can offer that will provide better protection.

@joelly please ask the seller if you can see the ring in person. The facet pattern is beautiful. Move it and check out that there is a pleasing on and off pattern. Make sure the facets don't all go dark at the same time. I don't think they do looking at the videos but check that out in real life.

Look at the profile. We see our ring in profile often. Do you like the profile. For me that is critical. I passed on an otherwise breathtaking stone because the profile was too flat for me. We all have our preferences however and as long as you like what you see it's good.

The very thin girdle would not deter me in the slightest. Many OECs have that (Bubbalah does) and you can just make sure the setting is protective.

And if you do meet the seller to see this stone in person make sure you are both wearing a mask.
If the seller lets you take videos (and hopefully he will) you can share here and we can weigh in hopefully in real time if you do feel you need us.

Crazy times but there is still beauty all around and life can still be sweet. Maybe this is your dream stone. Good luck and we are with you in spirit.

:???: Paralyzed....

Overcome that paralysis and spring into action!!! :mrgreen2:

That diamond may well be a total winner. The only way you'll find out is to arrange to see it, or at least ask for more photos that show the profile. The OEC experts here will be able to tell you if the profile looks good.

I think you need to determine four things: do you like the diameter size, color, crown angle and price?

What is your minimum diameter preference, is this stone ‘the big enough look’ you want? Don’t buy a stone that isn’t the big enough look you want.

Do you care about color? Are you one of those people in which tint bothers you? Like, have you ever had a G color stone that bothered you because it looked yellow? That’s a sign that you are color sensitive. In an old cut, L is the color grade that for me can be very amazingly white in some conditions, or it can have an underlying tone that takes it to another color vibe. If you are not color sensitive, then this stone is a go. You should ask for photos in natural light, sunlight, etc, before you see it in person, to see color in various lighting. L is a pretty nice find in an old cut, IMO.

Do you have a Pinterest or instagram screen shots of stones you love? Do you love puffy bubbly OMCs or fluffy OECs or are you gravitating towards old mine cushions or Transitionals. Do you have any diamond rings here on PS that you admire? Think about what you are drawn to. Like Missy, i love puffy crowns and three dimensionality. You need to see a photo or two of this diamond’s profile actually ask for several because a crown can look puffy from certain angles. Get the vendor to estimate crown angle and pavilion angle before you see it in person. If you are okay with what looks like a gorgeous cut that could be enough.

And price. Is it a comfortable, expected price?. Keep in mind the setting will add to the cost of a diamond and this diamond includes setting in price presumably. This setting looks pretty and ready to go, but the baguettes are quite long so see if it can be sized to your finger eventually. Don’t size it before you see it, because then you can’t return it.

Those are my thoughts to get you thinking your way out of analysis paralysis.

Wait, if this is Larry, you can totally trust this ring. I'm pretty sure he has a good return policy. His merch is top quality. Just have him hold it while you're thinking about it. He is super nice too.

That Faceting pattern is gorgeous and ideal for an OEC. It also faces up very white for an L. If I had the funds, I would snatch it up ASAP!!!

It is Larry. He is super nice. I also like the fact that he is local.

He is super nice and I don't know if he will remember me but when you see him please tell him Missy and Greg say hi. We met him a year ago (or was it 2 years ago-my brain cannot grasp time it's going so fast) at the show in Brooklyn and I was so impressed with his inventory and with him. Such a nice guy and he knows his antique jewels too.

I will. He is really nice.

The video of that diamond really brightened up my day. Such a beauty. I can’t wait to hear about your personal experience with it.

May I ask who is this Larry you speak of? Thank you, if you care to share.

I do love that stone and hope you can see it IRL to decide if it is the one.

The good way to see diamonds is to live with them for a week, the other possibilities are surrogates & even that mostly for comparing, not for tasting one stone.

Once you have it in hand, you may well compare with the smaller stones for cut - it takes some exercise & it may well be easy at some point to take pictures of things in the same light/position (I know how this sounds!), but much else of the impression is lost if only 2D images are available.

2p

Then, is it not fun - once or twice, just to keep a good measure.

My first thought was that this is an exceptionally well cut diamond with such a beautiful facet pattern. So I think when my first thought is wow, it says something to me. Did you feel this way? I think the way this diamond makes you feel says everything.

I cannot comment on anything else just what the most important factor is to me while selecting a stone. It has to give me goosebumps.

I would share this info if saw that OP had put it on hold first. @joelly are you still thinking about this stone?

Thank you! I think I know who this is now.. Appreciate your offer to help! :)

Larry is on Instagram. Platt Jewelry Store. He has many wonderful jewels. He owns a jewelry store in LA near the grove. Such a nice man to deal with.

His instagram is so much fun to look at! The stone is really gorgeous and I loved the photo so much, the cut looks perfect. Is this your favorite out of the other ones that you've shared?
