Hi. I'm about to propose and have done quite a bit of searching around on what makes a quality Asscher diamond. Here are some specs of 3 different stones I'm considering:

Carat: 0.50
Polish: Ex
Sym: Ex
Clarity: VVS2
Color: H
Table %: 59
Depth %: 65.9
Crown %: 15.1
Culet %: 0.4

Carat: 0.55
Polish: Vg
Sym: Vg
Clarity: VVS2
Color: F
Table %: 58
Depth %: 65.7
Crown %: 15.8
Culet %: 2.8

Carat: 0.55
Polish: Ex
Sym: Vg
Clarity: VVS2
Color: E
Table %: 61
Depth %: 65
Crown %: 14.3
Culet %: 0.4

Based on these metrics, which would be best?

Also, what solitaire settings work the best with Asscher's? I'm also trying to look for a setting, that has engraving or is in an art deco style. I can't seem to find any on any of the major sites. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks so much in advance!!!

Ditto - pics would really help, though hopefully one of the EC experts will see this thread soon and have more insight for you re. what you've posted. It's good that you have asscher in the thread title :))

To quote Karl -
"A square emerald cut is the generic name for an asscher or asscher like diamond.
There are a ton of variations which is why you have to have pictures when shopping online.
In general the things to look for are:
eye square?
eye clean? (no visible inclusions)
Smaller table
high crown
pleasing outline
pleasing patterns
Not overly dark
reasonable spread"

Unfortunately, I don't have photos. These diamonds are from Blue Nile. I'm looking to spend about $700 tops on the setting. I'd rather put the extra money into the stone.

I just wanted to be sure you know that an asscher is going to face up smaller than a round diamond of the same weight, so a .5 asscher is going to be around 4.4-4.5mm. You may want to consider a halo type setting for that size stone. Beverley K makes gorgeous antique style settings that would work well for an asscher.

Just saw your last post. I think the Bev K settings will be above your price point.

What is your budget for the stone? You might want to look at James Allen because their prices are often a little less than Blue Nile. Plus, they provide pictures which are essential.

You really need images/asets to judge asscher cuts.

Here is one on James Allen (not sure what your budget is). You could request an aset on this one.

Ha! I was just about to post that one as well!

This one is overkill on color and clarity, but it looks like a beautiful stone:

They just don't have many under a carat, unfortunately, and I think it has a lot to do with how small these stones face up.

I've looked at James Allen too. I like that they provide photos. I could spend $3000 without having to finance the ring. Are you familiar with Emma Parker & Co?

I prefer the E and the H, from the GCAL photos of those three. Don't like the thin windmills and thick facet style of the F.

They are. I'm still not sure that Blue Nile's signature ideal rating means much, but the specs seem to be good.
