5 stone ring 1.5 or 2 ct for size 6.25?

After stalking the 5 stone thread here, trying to decide on the best carat size for a five stone ring to fit my 6.25 finger, i need to leave the shadows of a lurker and ask for some input :)

I’ve decided to finally get a BGD open gallery ring, to mark the birth of my son. (It was a pretty dire situation so I’m getting myself something VERY nice, as a welcome home present after being in the NICU for 6-8weeks.)

I really want to get full finger coverage where you can’t see the band much, but still have a comfortable ring.
Would you recommend:
1.5 ct (0.311 I, 0.318 J, 0,33 J, 0.314 J, 0.311 I)
or go big with a 2 ct (0.4s in G-H)

There aren’t any 0.35 stones in Brian gavin’s current inventory, so splitting the difference doesn’t look like an option.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Although I wear a size 8, here is s comparison of a 1.5 carat vs 2.55 carat 5 stone ring. The setting appears to be the same as the one pictured. Larger stones are K-L color, smaller stones D(GIA). Honestly, the smaller size is more comfortable as the stones in larger size rub against my fingers. But larger one is flashier! Good luck!

I wear a 2 carat five stone ring on a 5.5 finger. It was made by Memoire and sits low and curved. It is very comfortable! If it wasn’t set this way though I am not sure if I would get finger rubbing from the diamonds.

Thank you. I really love that you have full finger coverage on both (from above).
I’m curious- How is the 1.5 in profile, do you see a lot of the shank in profile or side view day to day?
I do like a little flash :D

Wow L-K i wouldn’t have guessed, but i’m not that color sensitive it seems.
Do you remember how much variation there is in carat / mm size of your stones?

Thank you! The 1.5 stones are .3 carat, and the other one is .51 carats each . I don’t know mm size.

Lovely ring :)
I see what you mean, it looks like the prongs are a bit more blunt on the sides of the BGD setting. However I’m thinking i might get a little less width as the prongs are set a little further apart between the stones. Perhaps that will help some what on comfort.

Well this is a more difficult decision than expected. I was ready to buy the 2ct but wanted to check with BGD and got a recommendation to consider the 0.3 for comfort and to fit the style and size of ring. That threw me i guess :)

Oops @MissGotRocks--I just realized that I tried on the same style ring you have. Looks :kiss2: on you!

Thanks! I have had it for more than 15 years now and wear it as a right hand ring every day. I still love it!

My ring is a little under a size 6, maybe 5.75. It’s a 1.5 carat. I believe the stones were .29 each. I love the size. It is so comfortable. I’ve been asked several times if it’s an eternity ring because all you see are diamonds. I think it would drive me crazy to have the diamonds between my fingers, so I personally don’t think I could wear anything larger. A5D2A278-35F4-4C4D-87C6-F34ADAC80FF5.jpeg

I have a 1.7x cttw transitional cut 5-stone (4.3-4.5mm diameters) on a ~6.25-6.5 finger -- thread here! https://www.pricescope.com/communit...ranny-in-18k-rose-gold-shared-prong-3.215685/ Love the size. Probably wouldn't want to go substantially bigger. What are the diameters of your 0.3x vs 0.4x stones?

I have to imagine that the 1.5cttw in I/J colors is a lot less expensive than 2cttw in higher colors -- does the price difference help you make a decision? I.e., is a subtle-ish difference in size worth it in price? Are you more worried you won't like seeing color in I/J, or thatyou won't be able to see a difference in G/H but will have paid for it?

One of the stones is 4.9 mm vs. 4.2 on smaller ring. I don’t have a cert on the 2.55 ring, so I don’t know the cut quality. The .3 are ideal cut. Pictures of 2.55 are below. C9EA0257-A579-45BF-8F47-DB743A0F409A.jpeg 3EB6F4D9-B04F-4D6F-9FC0-F08BBFD3C429.jpeg

Thank you :) That is very helpful.

How much of the shank on the 1.5 do
you see? I really would like to not see that much.
I'm a size 6.5 and I tried on a 2 ctw last year and loved it.

IMG_2486.jpg IMG_2484.jpg IMG_2487.jpg

That is understandable it is so lovely :)
It looks like the outermost prong/shank is just peaking through at the sides, perhaps i can get away with 2ctw without it chafing the fingers beside it.

I think you should go for 2 ct if possible. There is a visible difference.

Have you considered 6 or 7 stones for even more finger coverage?

You should also consider how you’ll wear the ring…alone or stacked with a solitaire or other bands? Make sure you will have enough space to wear the ring as you intended.

I definitely see the difference and would really love to have the 2ct stand alone piece for a RHR if comfort allows it (as i originally started saving for a 2ct stone, but now i’ve parked that dream ring for a future anniversary. I just couldn’t justify cleaning out my investment account for a ring and i love the finger coverage of a 5 stone.

yes i was actually briefly contemplating a 6 stone with Quadex stones, but it would be about 24mm’s of stones total, just like the 2ct, so wouldn’t solve the issue. But it was tempting due to the stones being a bit cheaper, but it would be custom so that kind of negates the savings on the stones. Also there are no reference pics to get an idea of what i would be buying, so i wouldn’t know if i liked it prior to CAD’s being made :)

Good point, it will be on the right hand (no stack). I might get that 2ct solitaire one day but for now alas just on its own, so i won’t take that into account :)

My 5 stone is 2 ctw (4.55-4.7mm stones) and I’m a size 5 on my RHR. The ring is a size 5.25 with a sizing bar and I can wear it on both hands (size 4.5 and size 5). I posted lots of pictures on my thread.

Have you thought about getting 0.4ct J color stones and the upgrading the color later? You can reuse the setting if the mm size are in the same range.

Lovely ring :) Is that a memoir setting as well?
Really great to see the spread of 0.15mm isn’t readily apparent. Do you see it in person at all?

The profile pic of the ring is interesting. With that shot in mind and knowing my fingers also differ much the same in height and are a 6.25, i’m wondering if the diamonds would actually be able to fit me without rubbing against my fingers much.

Yes i was actually hoping for I or J color stones as my other rings are H and not super ideals. Also i bought 0.4 earrings with jacket halos two years ago and one is an I color the other K, and i’m very happy with Brian gavin’s stones in that range. So if there were 0.35-0.4 stones in J i would just buy them now :D

I tried to find out if Infinity / HPD might have some in that range i stock, but found their site is no longer up, so that was a dead end.

I recently had the same style of 5 stone ring made at BGD with slightly graduated stones (so I could use a couple that I had on hand). I wear a size 6.5 and the stones are as follows:

2 x 0.36 ct each (~4.65 mm diameter)
2 x 0.45 ct each (~4.95 mm diameter)
1 x 0.50 ct (~5.15 mm diameter)

I did feel the stones on the end at first when I started wearing the ring, but I got used to it.

Good luck with your project!

I got it from Costco of all places. This is the link. https://www.costco.com/.product.100773949.html

The 0.15mm graduation is very slight. It’s not noticeable because the stones are set in an arch. I can see it but my eyes are trained to see ultrafine details for my hobby and crafts.

It might help if you bought a 2ctw CZ 5 stone ring to try on. It will give you piece of mind and cost you less if you change your mind. BGD charged me $250 for the CAD drawing when I cancelled my 5 stone ring order.

Wow i have heard them mentioned here before, but have never seen anything IRL. (No costco in Denmark )

Okay that’s very helpful and also the info on your trained eye :D
I’ve got eagle eye as well and the husband often asks for my quality control abilities. So i’m sure i need to graduate the size a bit less than 0.15 then if going for a non-graduated ring :)

Good idea with the CZ! It might be cheaper than driving a round trip to Hamburg for a ring try on…

I did a five stone with brilliant cut cushions - not exactly the same as quadex but it gives you an idea of the look.
B34F1122-7670-44D4-94AA-5BEE44576539.jpeg

That is really beautiful, it still has the slightest scalloped look like rounds :)

I think the quadex will have a more ‘sharp’ look to it, like an asscher 5 stone i found here on PS. I think i just got a bit too hyped the stones were there in the specs i wanted, but i had my heart set on the rounds so i composed myself :)
