With diamond prices where they are, and the fact that I drive a '99 Saturn with 130k+ miles on it, yes--it would definitely cost more than what my car is worth to replace my e-ring.
However, my husband drives our new-to-us '05 Ford Focus which was about 10x what he originally paid for my e-ring. At the time he bought my e-ring, though, he was driving an '86 Buick, which we later sold for $100 to a family member.
