your E-ring worth more than your car?

With diamond prices where they are, and the fact that I drive a '99 Saturn with 130k+ miles on it, yes--it would definitely cost more than what my car is worth to replace my e-ring.

However, my husband drives our new-to-us '05 Ford Focus which was about 10x what he originally paid for my e-ring. At the time he bought my e-ring, though, he was driving an '86 Buick, which we later sold for $100 to a family member. :wink2:

Yes, though neither are that expensive when compared to most PSers. I drive a 1994 Honda Civic with 138K+ miles on it...the price of the ring was about twice what the car is worth, though I'd imagine the replacement cost is quite a bit more now. I'm selling the car when we move, though, so I'll have no car for awhile and I imagine whatever we eventually get will cost a lot more!

I need a reliable car to get to and from work. Public transportation is a joke down here and I work second shift.
Plus, I give enough money to insurance companies every year.

We just recently upgraded my engagement ring. My husband joked to me at the time he was wiring the money to the shop in the US "You know we could buy a brand new VW Golf GTI" with this money?!? I felt a tad sick at the thought, as our upgrade budget did seem to double as the ring viewing went on... Mind you in 6 years time that Golf will look really old-fashioned and dated, whereas my ring will still (hopefully) look still all shiny and pretty and lovely :naughty:

No, but that's simply because I have a platinum band. I'm more of a diamond admirer than someone who would wear one.

My car is a Mercedes GL550.

Purchase price was about the same for both.

I bought my 2007 Civic in November of '06.
I bought my upgrade ring in March of '11.

Current value? I don't know.

My car hasn't depreciated much in the five years I've had it. I paid cash in '06, and now it's worth $2,500 less than I paid back then, according to KBB. If it was in excellent condition, it would be worth only $1,000 less than what I paid for it. This is why we ended up buying new Civics, by the way. We looked for used, but they weren't going for much less than the new cars, so we went for new.

We paid cash for my original e-ring and my upgrade. My ring goes up in value every single day in my opinion. It is truly a thing of beauty, and it certainly has been a joy to possess. What it's worth on the market, I have no clue.

I don't plan on getting rid of either any time soon. The car I will drive until it flat-out breaks down beyond repair. The ring I will wear my entire life. I like the idea of passing it on to a future daughter, but she's likely going to have to pry it out of my cold, dead hands.

A decent investment on both accounts, I say.

Edited to correct purchase year of ring.

I was going to say, of course not, but when I think about it they are getting closer in value. Car purchased for 15K, but maybe worth around 4K? Ring purchased for 2300, but probably worth 3K? (maybe more) now?
I agree with Haven. We are planning to keep our vehicle for another 5 years, not quite driving it to the ground, but as much as possible given we have small children. As we are not planning to sell it it's current worth is not important. As far as my ring, my dream is that it becomes an heirloom. My daughter already knows it will pass onto her (hopefully not for a long time!)

My 7 year old Lexus is still worth more than my e-ring. I just ran a Kelley Blue Book report, and my car is still over $18K,

E-ring is around $16-17K so they're going to be worth the same pretty soon!

Right now? Yes, my e-ring is worth more, probably at least 10k more if I had to guess.

I drive a very reliable used car. Cars are not important to me, so I've never owned an expensive one.

They're pretty close, though both were amazing deals (we paid around half of what both were worth). My car's purchase price was just a little more. I just blue booked my car's value, and private party value is still $1k more than we bought it for 5 years ago, and I think a little less than my ring would cost now.

No, my car is probably worth about 30 times as much as my e-ring. Both my DH and I thought it was inconceivable to wear a car on the finger.

Yep. Ring is forever. Cars good for about 200k miles and then it's dead.

That is how I feel. To me it makes no sense to spend a fortune on a car because it is not going to give you pleasure throughout your whole life. A car is to get you from point A to point B IMO. I would much rather spend the money on my ER. I realize though that for many the car they drive is a status symbol and as important to them as an ER is to me. I am fortunate my dh feels the same way I do though. :))

We drive a lexus SUV that we bought secondhand in 2002 and knock wood it is still going strong! (hope I didn't just jinx it ;-) )

For some absolutely.
I just love jewelry and adore it for its beauty and for how it makes me feel. The status symbol aspect doesn't concern me. I don't buy things (cars, jewels, clothes, homes etc) for what others will think but rather for what my dh and I decide is right for us.

You should ask this in conjunction w/geography.
If you're a New Yorker, for instance its not hard for your e-ring to be worth more than your (non-existent) car. My e-ring cost $600 in 1981 dollars but I did not have a car in those days as I took the subway or bus or walked everywhere.
Now I do have a car but have no idea what it's worth; not much I would think, its so old that I have to open the door manually and crank up the windows manually--does get me where I want to go with no problem though so don't worry about it. My hubby asked me if I wanted a new car sometime ago and I said no, buy me some jewelry instead...

Same is true for people who really love cars. I love my car not because of the status symbol but because I truly love everything about the car and how beautiful it is.

I've been thinking-- the purhase price of my car in 2007 was 2.5 times my ring purchase price. But over the years the car had gone down and the ring has gone up. So maybe not exactly more YET but the prices are getting closer and closer.

I totally understand that. It's what appeals to you as an individual. Your preferences and interests and what speaks to your heart and it is what makes the world an interesting and diverse place. I am glad we are not all the same or our Show Me the Bling section would be pretty boring. :))

My FI's car is worth twice as much as what he paid for my e-ring, but he had to downgrade his car when we bought our house. My ring cost 1/4 of what my car is worth. I get the better car and the pretty ring. I'm spoiled! :D

Yes, ering factor 2 and rhr factor 3...(current car value VS what the rings cost)
I'm doing this several times a month(more than once weekly),

so I do NOT want a better car.
As long as it's safe, comfortable and reliable and fits all my kids, it's my perfect car.
