I am helping my cousin''s bf pick out her engagement ring. She wants a yellow sapphire. I am working with a local B&M store to get some in, and honestly i don''t know much about sapphires. Is this one a good one, or can you not tell? Is this company reputable? Are there any online retailers that I can trust? I bought my diamond at WF, but I don''t think colored stones are as simple.

Link is usable now. NSC is a reputable company and specializes in unheated sapphires. Although more expensive than most vendors, I hear that they have good customer service. WF is also able to source coloured stones from Pala at very low markups, from my prior experience with them.

The sapphire has a decent cut and colour. The saturation doesn't wow me, but step cuts aren't exactly the best cut to show off colour. If you are close, it's worth taking a look at it in person.

my ering came from NSC--my DH did it all on his own:) He loved Livia the sales rep and looked at tons of sapphires before he found one he loved. Their prices are higher, but you can find beautiful sapphires there if you look. he liked it b/c it was a one stop shop where he could have the ring designed, pick the sapphire, pick the side stones, and have it all set...

It''s a lovely stone, and considering it''s cut (step cut with it''s large facets) and tone of color (light and sunny shade of yellow) it should be a very brilliant stone that "shoots sparks outside it''s body" - to put it simply, and that''s especially nice in direct sunlight. Just don''t expect those multicolored sparks like the ones you see in a diamond, cause sapphires don''t have that optical property.

I like the color -- says it''s vivid. And I like the shape. It will be long and thin, is that what she wants?

If the shape is OK with her then I''d say take a look at it in person.

Thanks guys. I appreciate all of the feedback.

She is not a jewelry person (crazy, right?) so this has been pretty difficult. In pictures she liked the look of step cuts, not the crushed look of cushion--but she might not feel the same way when she sees the stones in person. Ahh. I don't really know the best way to do this.

He wants to be at around 5k for the ring. She likes the look of pave/split shank. I am not too worried about finding the setting.

I have to add a space right after the name to make it linkable.

Nice yellow; I like concave faceting in light coloured stones and this one really stands out.
