Hi there!

Does anyone have examples of warmer diamonds (J to M) in yellow gold settings? I've searched PS a number of times but haven't found that many. I've seen threads about this topic but I ended up feeling confused more than anything.

The e-ring setting I'm looking at is Tacori 2510 in yellow gold. I haven't found my diamond yet but I would like to get ~6.5mm OEC in a warmer colour. In your opinion, will this look terrible in a yellow gold setting with whiter channel set diamonds?

Please be kind on my preference for yellow gold settings, I know it's not to everyone's taste :)

What a gorgeous setting! I love it in YG.

I like the look of warmer stones in YG. Of course, I wear an O-P in RG, so that does bias my opinion.

I love love love yellow gold and think your setting is an awesome idea  My ering is a simple 14K YG 6-prong solitaire, the wedding band is also 14K YG. I love how warm and shiny they are on my hand. The stone is a GIA-J OEC, which looks plenty white to my eyes. Right now I temporarily also have an L-M OEC in a platinum fishtail setting, and I can see more warmth in that stone, even though it is in a white metal setting, than I can in my J. I'll be setting the L-M in a 14K YG bezel soon :naughty:

Thank you BDTG!

In your experience with warmer stones, would you say there's a tipping point where yellow gold makes a diamond looks whiter versus enhancing the warmth? (does that make sense?)

Your M three-stones (AMAZING BTW) looks much warmer than ResonanceofLife's O/P in rose gold (also gorgeous but a very different outcome) - maybe it's all about the lighting when taking pictures?

Oh yay! More replies!

GemFever - your set is gorgeous, your stone looks VERY white!

ETA - Haven, you did an amazing job designing your set. I just read your post about it, the basket/carriage (not good with technical term) is TDF.

I'm not sure there is a tipping point per se where colored gold might enhance the warmth. I think it is really a matter of personal taste and how color sensitive one is. Many factors can determine how warm the stone looks in photos, which lab graded the stone(s), lighting, reflections, what color someone is wearing on their body.

I adore the warmer colored diamonds and think that they could be gorgeous in yellow gold settings. Plus some of the tacori and antique style settings really "sing" in colored gold - there is just something so old world and romantic about that combination.

Here's another beauty:

and this one (not sure of stone color) but tacori looks fab in YG:

Okay, it's clear to me that I'm not good at using search terms on PS - I don't know how I missed either of these. Again, SUPER helpful, especially that second link to joxxx's OEC in yg tacori! Scrumptious - feeling better about warmer diamonds and yellow gold combo, I just need to find a well-cut OEC.

It is hotly debated whether YG contrasts with a warmer stone (making it look whiter) or lends color to the stone. In my experience, my decently cut 100-faceted RB that was J/K contrasted nicely with its original yellow gold setting and I never thought it looked tinted. It's now set in white gold, and there are times that I notice the tint, but overall most people don't believe it's a J/K when I wear it, so it still appears plenty white against the WG. I personally think the color of the metal makes little difference when you're in the slight-tint, near-colorless, or colorless realm, and I'd choose based on what's flattering to your skin and within your style.

I've been wearing my old plain yellow gold wedding band recently, and forgot how rich yellow gold looks, I'm falling in love again.

I think that setting is gorgeous in any metal! I am not sure about the contrast with the sidestones. Some people here with lower colored center diamonds had their settings made with lower color diamonds as well. But I am not sure if Tacori will do that or not.

That's an excellent point DS, I will check into it. I have a feeling that Tacori may not be willing to lower side stone colour all that much (but I'm basing this on something I THINK I heard somewhere while researching settings).

As for an OEC, maybe I"ll try to stick to a J/K coloured stone to minimize contrast. I'm also wondering if the contrast might be slightly less noticeable because the centre diamond sits fairly high above the side stones...I think I'll be going to try on that setting for the 5th time this weekend, lol!

Hi there!

I'm a fan of warmer stones in anything BUT white gold :o Though I love PLAT and WG, to me warmer stones just have a more romantic old world feel to them in rose, yellow or unplated white gold (more of a buttery tone). I actually just purchased a O-P stone which I'm hoping to set in unplated white gold, but I heavily debated Rose. And I love the setting you picked out. Very pretty.

I think a yellow gold setting with a warmer color diamond could be wonderful.

If you prefer yellow gold don't hesitate, go for it!

I love love love yellow gold. My mom's ring is a 1.25 AGS 000 J in 18k yellow gold with platinum prongs. It is definitely more tinted than my G color AGS 000. But I would never call it yellow, or even warm. It's just not white white. I love the look in combination with the yellow gold. The faint tint in the diamond (which seems almost like a reflection of the metal) just "matches" the rich gold so nicely. I don't have any pictures but could take some at Christmas time when I'll see her next if that helps.

Coati's dreamboat ring is an M OEC in 18k yellow gold and it is perfection.

All these replies have really helped me ladies! I'm feeling much more confident in my choice (and my taste/preference) to pair warm with warm. I have to say when visiting the local B&Ms (as well as talking to friends) and explaining my e-ring preference, I've gotten some looks of distaste and doubt. Apparently a number of jewellers around here think yellow gold is icky and way out of trend. And I won't even begin to tell you the astounding lack of knowledge about old cuts...eeeep!

I have to say Coati's OEC and setting is killer, I pretty much fainted when I saw it.

Warm with warm - my favourite combo  The setting you've chosen is GORGEOUS!!! If you're very concerned about the contrast between sidestones and center your best bet is probably to ask if they'll do it with single cut melee - I have no idea if this is something they'd do though. The colour difference that you see IRL isn't actually because of body colour differences, it's because smaller diamonds return light so differently - even lower coloured J/K RB melee will look like bright white dots. Single cuts have fewer larger facets so the light return is more similar to that of larger stones, which mitigates the "little bright white dot colour contrast" effect.

I've written a couple of essays on here on my personal thoughts ... if I could remember the threads... I tend to favour unplated wg with Cu or Ni over yellow gold for slightly tinted stones - J through N-ish? I love how metal and stone colour sort-of blends to create this overall look of "warmth"

Ah - one in Yenny's thread: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/which-metal-compliments-a-warm-stone-best.160706/

I find I get better search results just using google instead of the PS search function. Just google 'pricescope' and whatever you're looking for.

Don't listen to people telling you about trends. Buy what you love. I like the look of YG and wish I could wear it. Coati's ring is

I find it amazing that people rail against YG. Yellow is the *natural* color of gold! It's how gold is supposed to be! So pretty and warm and shiny

Can't wait to see your finished ring! :appl:

I've looked at it oh, about a hundred times, and it still has that effect on me. So amazing.

My experience buying OECs in yellow metal and then unsetting them is that yellow metal adds about 2 color grades to the apparent body color of the stone. Whether you care or not is another issue. And of course, this is separate from the beauty of yellow gold. I do find diamonds "pop" a lot in yellow metal as well, because of the contrast.

I agree, Coati's ring is one that gets me every time!
