You might contact poppyseed (Amcor Designs) to see how much one of the fishtail settings would cost. It's not going to be $100, but maybe you can get the setting (including setting the diamond) for under $200. On DB, just search for poppyseed to find some current listings.

Ok, this is platinum and diamonds in a halo around a sapphire. The sapphire is set kinda high, so maybe a jeweler can swap out the head for lower set prongs? And still stay sort of close to the budget?

Sure do! I really hope he gets this I haven't found anything so vintagy yet modern, cool, nice CTW, and CHEAP!

With one or two cheap engraved good bands? A diamond one on some anniversary, that would make a stunning stack.

I really like this one. It has great finger coverage, is the gold he wants, and sounds like the price is ideal. What's not to like?
