Would you say 400 dollars is a fair price for this aquamarine ?

Hey,

I've been looking for an aquamarine for some time. Here is a 12 carats one from Nigeria with good dimensions (15.400 x 15.300 x 10.400 mm). I know deeper blue aquas are more highly valued and that is has a window but I actually like this lighter color. I trust the vendor from whom I already bought, my only questions are both the price (never bought aquamarines) and the brown stain you can see on the first pic. Any opinion would be highly appreciated :)

Absolutely... I've seen the super pale material go for more than that (only $33/carat). This is mid-range saturation to me. Very pretty. Can you see the brown stain face-up?

That brown looks like a facet reflecting something brown. I don’t think it’s inherent to the stone. $400 is a fair price.

I would bet that TL is 100% correct on this. In photos facets will always pick up some other color near by. If it was in the stone, it wouldn't show on only the surface of one facet.

Looks nice and yes, the brown is a reflection off the facet. It is the price. Seems too good to be true $400 for a 12 carat Aqua of this saturation. I'd be very wary unless you know of other people who have bought from this vendor whomever it may be. I bet the stone is quite a bit paler in person. Beware of light blue Topaz masquerading as Aqua too.

I googled the pictures. The price I seen was $1499.00. Which sounds about right. Still a good deal. I've seen them for much more this color and this size.

Hey just to give an update : the stone has arrived and I'm delighted by its color ! The window is not too bad IMG_20240514_165000.jpg (at least better than for 90% of aquas I've seen) and I'm coming back from a meeting with my jeweller : it will be set in a pendant with a semi-halo of pink spinels and white gold, can't wait :)
