Would greatly appreciate advice: buying a ring after 12 years of marriage

Hello! I've been reading a lot here, but would greatly appreciate any advice.

Background: My husband gave me an family heirloom ring when we married 12 years ago. It had three small mine-cut diamonds aligned vertically (kind of like a cross) and a jeweler told us it was worth ~$300 total. The setting was rose gold (not my style) and the ring was from the 1800s. It was a lovely ring, but just not my style at all. I loved the sentiment, but rarely wore it-- the way the diamonds were aligned made it hard to wear with my wedding ring, and my husband wasn't in favor of changing the setting-- so it's been sitting in my jewelry box.

Current Situation: Fast forward 4 kids and 12 years later: We've saved up $30,000 to buy a new ring. I've wanted a ring for years, and keep putting it off because I feel bad spending the money on something that's purely for my own enjoyment. I am pretty low-maintenance in general-- I wear minimal makeup, the only jewelry that I wear is my wedding ring, and I am super tall with very unfortunate large hands (size 8 ring)-- so a 1 carat diamond on my fingers looks small. And I am not dainty (again, unfortunately) so a setting that is simple and classic interests me-- I'm a fan of the Vatche U-113 6 prong setting that I've seen people here recommend. I get that some people might find it boring, but after living for 12 years with a very unique engagement ring, I'm ready for boring!

What I like: I like round, radiant, and cushion shaped stones. I don't think I'm very sensitive to color. I do care a lot about how sparkly the ring is-- my old ring was super dull, and I'd love to get one that I can stare at and see flashes of color. I tried to go to a local jeweler to get an idea of what I was looking for, but all of their stones were CZ and they didn't have any above 1.5 carats so I left feeling like I didn't learn much. I'm way too intimidated by Tiffany or someplace like that to go in, even just to try-- and I do NOT care about brand name. (I'm much more of a Costco girl.)

Does anyone have any recommendations for stones that will look nice when I stare at them? Because I don't have experience with diamonds in real life, I have a hard time knowing what will bug me when I see it-- for example, I think I'd rather have some inclusions and a larger stone than a really small more perfect stone-- just because my fingers are so big. Links to actual stones for sale would be a major plus-- thank you!!!

Addendum:
I love the look of this, but it's double my budget:
https://m.costco.com/Radiant-Cut-4....tinum-Three-Stone-Ring.product.100394470.html

This ring is in my budget (and I love the look of this too)-- but when I run the ring through the HCA (Halloway Cut Advisor) calculator, it tells me that "the total Depth % entered suggests that the girdle is dangerously thin, or the data entered is incorrect"-- but I typed in the GIA number, so I'm thinking that the girdle is bad.

Lots of people will come along to advise, in the meantime, browse Whiteflash’s site, their A Cut Above diamonds are the bees knees for sparkliness :mrgreen2:

I am sure you will get lots of suggestions, what a great budget and lovely position to be in. This is exactly the sort of dilemma I day dream about!

A superideal round will give you maximum sparkle, something like this is in budget,

https://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3932395.htm

You could then spend the rest of the $ on the setting and the possibilities are endless. This, for example, is classic and sleek,

I’m looking forward to seeing what you choose!

This Whiteflash A Cut Above Diamond at 3 carats is going to be super sparkly and a nice size:

https://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3893624.htm

Super ideal cuts like the A Cut Above at Whiteflash do carry a premium - so if you are OK with still a well cut diamond (it will still be very sparkly) and save some money (or go up in color/size/clarity etc), you can also search for diamonds on James Allen that falls < 2 on HCA and go from there. Or, look for AGS 000 diamonds. I am sure you will get suggestions from other posters on this.

FYI radiant and cushion cuts face up smaller than rounds e.g. 3 carat cushion looks like a 2 carat round, so if you are concerned about size I would suggest sticking to rounds.

Your hands are so NOT big. I'm an 10.5!

A 2+ carat stone after wearing nothing is going to be a big adjustment. Have you tried wearing a CZ solitaire of the same size? If not, I'd start with that. With 4 kids and a busy life, if you have not, you should test out "diamond" sizes. Here are two rings that won't fall apart the first time you wear them and come in a range of finger sizes.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PX3Y83O/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
https://www.amazon.com/Round-CZ-Ele...srs=9399664011&ie=UTF8&qid=1516616720&sr=8-31

I'd also stick with WF and HighPerformanceDiamonds if sparkle is your goal.

Some questions. How color sensitive/acute are you? Are you someone who will search and search for just the right color nail polish/hair color/shoes? Can you see the slightest tint of yellow in the laundry? Do you obsess forever on paint color to find just the right shade of paint? Are you an artist/painter/quilter?

You posted a three stone setting. Do you think you'd rather have a solitiare for your budget or a three-stone? As someone with a larger finger myself, I greatly prefer 3-stone settings. They give you some width for coverage and they help make the center a little less prominent as they step down the height. It makes if feel less ginormous. Plus, 3 diamonds is better than one, right? This is whiteflash's butterflies setting. It usually made in diamonds, but I thought this sapphire picture from a PS member showed it off well.

The sides don't need to be the same shape either.

For daily wear, a bezel might be quite pretty and functional.

So, give it some thought and give us some feedback.

Happy searching. And yes, you can do much better for your hard saved $$$$ with a PS recommended vendor rather than Costco. You’ll be amazed at what’s out there. If you’re happy to go down a bit in colour ie H or I and look at “eye clean”SI clarity (what that means is there are more flaws but because they are crystals or clouds you can’t see them just looking with your eyes. Diamonds are graded for clarity at x10 magnification. But you do want a well cut gem, that’s the key to a nice sparkle.
If you’re happy to go with a simple 6 claw solitaire setting in 14kt gold for around $700 odd, you’ll have more $$$ for the big diamond!
The diamond gurus will come along and give you some suggestions.

I agree with Bron about settings. I buy the best diamond I can and go « quality but inexpensive » with the setting. To me it is all about the diamond.
You are in good hands here and it will be fun to see your search progress. All the best!

I'm going to suggest a 3 stone for you to give you some finger coverage. This gives you a 2.2 center and .8 each sides total 3.8 ctw. That would be lots
of sparkle and give you great finger coverage. That would be 6mm + 8.35mm + 6mm.

Possible settings...I love that 3 stone bezeled (last photo) RS posted above. I would go with
a very low setting since you have young kids. I personally would probably go with custom made though.

I second the Amazon CZ recommendation! I’m a 7.5 ring finger and I hate that I can never truly try on rings at jewelry stores. Once I narrow my search, I like to buy cheapy knock offs to really take the look for a spin. We have a Clothing Mentor resale shop on town that buys them back from me when I’ve had my fun. :)

If you want sparkle, a superideal cut is going to beat out the other shapes. Either a large solitaire (I have the Vatche U113) or a three stone ring would be great! I have dealt with Whiteflash for years and recommend them highly. They usually have the best prices and selection of well cut rounds.

If 1.5 seemed small to you, I would consider going even bigger than 2 carats. Your size 8 finger can accommodate it. A three stone is also an excellent idea. Just depends on the look you prefer.

Try on both solitaires and 3 stones, and see which you prefer. I personally love 3 stones, and they provide a lot of finger coverage. Whiteflash has a few different 3 stone settings. I also agree, with the advice if you do do a 3 stone, make the side stones more accents than compete in size. I understand about being cost conscious. If it would make you feel more comfortable about wearing the ring, buy something under your budget.
For me, I love this stone, I bet this would be gorgeous if you were doing a solitaire
https://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3907532.htm

If you don't mind warmth, and for me color levels up to J it's a personal preference, this one looks great, and is a little bigger and less expensive. With your price range, I would totally stick with a super ideal cut to get the best performance.

Highly recommend going to Amazon or QVC and ordering few different styles of cz rings in your size. Wear them for couple of weeks or even longer to get a sense of what you like in the settings and stone dimensions. You have a great budget for a ring so narrowing down choices may take some time.

I also recommend AVR AVC diamonds.. I have an ACA/Expert selection 3 stone ring.. .55 .70 .55 all G color SI1.. I LOVE THIS FIRE BOMB. I had a 1.33 K AVC that I gave to my son for his wife's engagement ring.. I LOVED THAT STONE.. BUT I didn't want my son to go into hock for a ring and my husband and I agreed it has now become and heirloom stone.. I have learned one huge thing here, CUT IS KING!!! cut beyond color or clarity.. with smaller stones one could even go SI2 if it's eye clean. I look forward to seeing what you get - 4 kids! 12 years.. hats off to you and hubster for a great life!

I forgot to mention www.diamdb.com is a great resource for figuring out how the size would look on your finger.

You can input the size e.g. 2 carat, or if you know the dimensions of a particular stone, you can do that too, together with your ring size, finger length etc. You can select your phone or laptop's screen size so that the diamond actually appears true to life size.

I find that using it on the phone really gives me the "woah, this is how it must look in real life" for some reason. Have fun!

I am a size 7.5 and I wear a 1.5 carat with tapered baguettes. It used to feel large, but DSS is a real thing. I think a 3 stone is a great solution for optimum finger coverage. I love a round with pear sides.

I think you have a great budget and can find something absolutely amazing with the help of the folks here!

Whiteflash ACA or High Performance diamonds are the way to go. Is the 30k just for the stone, or for the stone and setting? I would not go as low as J, but an H or I color would suit you very well.

And I don't think a size 8 is all that large, but maybe that's because I'm a 6.5 /7 lol.

I'm in love with the August Vintage stones (I bought 2 in December). Any of these would look great in solitaire or 3-stone settings:
https://www.augustvintageinc.net/co...-304ct-j-vs1-august-vintage-cushion-brilliant

https://www.augustvintageinc.net/co...cts/2-064ct-i-vs2-august-vintage-european-cut

At one point, I was considering these 3 to make a 3-stone ring, but I went with a 1.7 J color European round instead. I don't think that Jonathan would mind me posting the photos he sent me.

A photo of this trio:
AVC 3 stones 1.72 J VS1.jpg
I love the finger coverage this would give, and the coverage would be even better if you used a 2 ct. I was going to have him make me a rose gold setting. This is a CAD of the ring:
AVCRoseGoldCAD1.jpg
In the end, I went with the Sienna solitaire for my August Vintage European round, but would love to have an August Vintage Cushion 3 stone one day!

Since I see everyone is pretty much recommending WF, I'm going to suggest some other stones that aren't "super ideal" but will still in the ideal range that:
 https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-di...i-color-vs2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-3680824
 https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-di...f-color-si1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-3593635
https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-di...j-color-vs2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-3451981
https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-di...i-color-si1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-3734411

I'd ask for ideal scopes on 3 of your faves from here....it also seems like these are in the US from the delivery date so another option would be reaching out to Yekutiel from ID Jewelry and see if he can access these stones and provide you with light return images. They also work with great benches and carry Vatche so they could make or get any setting you want!

I have no stone suggestions to add but wanted to wish you well on your hunt! Don’t feel guilty about spending the money on something that’s just for your enjoyment... you’ve waited a long time to have something you love on your finger and I have no doubt that seeing you stare at your new ring will bring your husband great enjoyment too =)2

Oh, I’d also second buying cheap CZ rings from amazon - both solitaires in various sizes as well as three-stone settings. Wear them during everyday life and soon you’ll figure out what works best for you. Keep in mind DSS is a real thing! I have an 8mm stone that felt huge and heavy at first; now I barely feel it on my hand and there are times I actually think “Eh, I could go larger....”

there are lots of great suggestions here. definitely avoid the Costco ring. It's overpriced for what it is. Another huge YAY to Whiteflash - I have a 2.93tct I color/VS2 clarity ring that was about your budget (a little over) and it is big and white and sparkly as heck.
