Worried about my new ring!

Thanks Chrono. The funny thing is though I did my homework.. or so I thought! I was two months researching and looking for my ring... however, I didnt realise that its only when you are wearing it under different lights that you really get to see how good/bad the cut is! yes the baguettes were also examined.

based on the photos I sent do you think I should just suck it up or explore what is is that is bothering me! I do actually love the ring.. what I am hating more would be if I have paid hard earned money on something that is worthless!

Then how come you ended up buying a stone w/o a GIA report?..

Yes, if it were well cut, it would have very little leakage.

Can you post a picture in shaded daylight as we cannot see into your stone to see the facets, things like the size of the table reflection on the pavilion below can point out if the stone is shallow or deep? Your photos show white light return which hides the stone so not much can be seen in them.

I will take another picture tomorrow. I am now 99% convinced the baguette side stones are synthetic material. 100% transparent, waxy/softer feel to the touch and when I scrape the side with my nail its almost like I can scrape bits of it off (obviously I havent gone that far) . Dont know how I am staying so calm about this but really feel like I could cry!! I am going to call some jewellers tomorrow to see if they will assess the stones for me but I think they wont do that unless the purchase was from abroad. Is there any way I can confront the seller about this unless I am armed with proof ? this whole experience is beyond upsetting and YES before anyone says it again I KNOW I made a mistake!!! just looking for help now to try to rectify this somewhat.

Reading print thorough a diamond does not necessarily prove it is not a real diamond.
If real diamond material is cut thin/shallow enough it behaves like a window, letting light pass straight through.

When light is traveling inside a diamond and hits a facet it does one of two things:
1. Bounce/reflect off the facet and travel back into the diamond.
2. Pass through the facet and leave the diamond.

What determines which it does?
The angle the light ray makes with the facet.
The angle (at which a light ray changes from exiting the diamond vs. bouncing and staying in the diamond) is called the critical angle.

Take your ring to a pawn shop or jeweler and have them test the side diamonds.

Thank you Kenny! Thing is.... its like there are no facets or anything interesting happening with the light!!!! they are like glass !!! I will just have ot get them tested... and I would say 100% I am right!!!! SURELY I have recourse in that event?!

I notice that your diamond has a large table. Other than that, though, you haven't said anything about it that would indicate that it performs horribly. Nothing in your photos indicates that (though they are out of focus). I just want to mention that my very favorite viewing light is overcast outside for the very reason that it doesn't sparkle in that lighting. I love the white brilliance in my diamond, which is also shallow (excellent diameter for the weight). My diamond has a smaller table facet than yours, but spready isn't necessarily a deal-breaker. It is certainly not the favorite here on Pricescope, but that doesn't mean it's hideous. I am pretty sure you have worked yourself up too far over those baguettes. I can't imagine that they aren't real. Step cut diamonds don't look anything like brilliant cut diamonds. Nothing wrong with choosing size over cut. If you fell in love with the ring in person, the rest shouldn't matter.

OP - my thought is that the baguettes likely are diamonds, just not well-cut - and if you feel you could scrape something off the surface, perhaps the baguettes (and entire ring) is dirty? I've bought several second-hand/antique rings, and all of them have benefited from a cleaning as soon as I got it home... have you cleaned your ring yet? If there is grime/yuck coating the stones and metal, soak it first in warm/hot soapy water for a bit, then give it a good scrub with a soft, worn toothbrush, and rinse well in warm water.

Thank you Tourmaline!!! that makes me feel much better! Just by way of an update, I went back to the appraiser today and she tested the stones in front of me and all are real. so PHEW. I also asked her about the feel of the baguettes and she said its probably due to the way they are mounted. in terms of the light issue I am having, she couldnt really see what I was talking about, however, she advised me that its probably due to the facets and the fact that no its not an excellent cut but overall she said its a very good cut from what she can see. This really put my mind at ease so now its a case of getting over my issues or deciding if I just will not be able to do that! what I have realised from talking to her and this site is that unless you can afford it, you cannot have all the specifications you want in a ring so sometimes compromise is everything.

You are so right, unless you have Oprah or Bill Gates' budget, we all have to accept compromises in our diamond rings.

The compromise I had to accept in mine: though it's VS2 from AGS, has an unfortunate black carbon blob.
