Will such a TEENY, TINY difference in MM size between 2 stones be visible??

I have been considering 2 stones for a while and now my husband has told me he ordered one stone for us to look at because it is a better color and cut grade. There is also a TINY (and I mean TINY) increase in MM size between the two:

Stone 1 (2.72 carats) H SI1 with a diameter of 8.90 x 8.96 x 5.48.

Stone 2 (2.86 carats) G SI1 with a diameter of 9.04 X 9.09 x 5.68.

My sweet hubby ordered the 2nd stone this morning (because of better color, AGS Triple 0 cut, etc) -- not because of size increase -- but now we''re just curious...

Side by side, would you see any size difference -- or is the difference visibly too tiny to really notice? I guess there is approximately a .14mm increase in diameter? Is that even detectable?

Any P-scope officionados out there who have any opinion on this?

Thanks so much!

You *might* notice a difference with side by side comparison, but it would be slight and up to the both of you if such as minuscule difference would be worth basing your purchase on....But it is generally thought you need a difference of half a mm to be able to see any real increase, but that of course is subject to opinion and perception etc. If you were to view both diamonds individually, I doubt you would notice any difference.

.1 mm is miniscule. it is definitely not appreciable to the naked eye. there are other factors that could contribute to making one diamond look bigger than the other but on that size difference alone....no way.

eta: hehe....lorelei and i both said 'miniscule'

funny word! i think once is enough!

I think that 0.1 mm is really too small to be detectable even after staring at it for hours. Heck, I can''t even draw what a 0.1 mm looks like on paper.

Ditto to what everyone else has said.....it might be BARELY appreciable when compared side-by-side, but if you were to put the diamonds on opposite ends of a dining room table, you''d not be able to tell which was which. It won''t change the overall "presence" of the stone at all once set.

Think of it this way: One gal is 5''3"; the other is 5"3.25" inches. There is a measurable difference, but it''s unlikely that one gal will appear any taller than the other. Even if they were standing side-by-side, you''d have to scrutinize pretty hard to pick up on it.

Thanks for the help! You all confirmed what I thought I already knew. It isn't actually bad news -- as I am hoping the G SI1 AGS Triple 0 cut astounds me by its comparative beauty alone. Seeing a slight size difference might sway my opinion just a smidge and I don't really want that. I really want the prettier stone - as I think they'll both look significantly larger than my current 1 carat.

Does anyone have a size-by-side picture comparison of a similar size jump? (I mean the difference between approx. 1 carat and something in the neighborhood of the size stone we ordered (maybe between 2.5 and 3 carats).I know someone out there has photoshop talents and has played around with side-by-side size pictures for fun - as I have seen them on P-scope but I don't know how to find it...?

Any idea?

Thanks again!

here is a 1carat next to a 2.75carat

Belle! Thanks so much for granting my request so lightning-fast! Wow! What an awesome graphic. Can''t wait to show this to my hubby. He is excited to receive the stone but not NEARLY as excited as I am. Maybe this''ll fire him up!

Many thanks!!

i always liked this picture too...although it only goes up to 2 carats:

Model''s middle finger is a 6 US ring size (used to try and fit more rings on the upper knuckle).

Sizes: From left to right: 1.02ct [E/VS1], 1.21ct [G/VVS1], 1.51ct [F/SI1] and 2.01ct. [E/VS1]

Ditto what others have said. The difference in size is super tiny. I would pick diamonds based on light performance and price since the size difference isn''t going to be real noticeable. Please post pictures when you have it, we''d all love to see the stone and the final ring!!!

Thanks everyone! I will definitely post pics once it is in my hand. My hubby told me today that it will not arrive until Monday because we did a wire transfer adn it takes longer? (Somehow that doesn''t sound right...I wonder...)

It is my b-day, as I said before, on Saturday and I told him he could wrap this rock and let the sheer delight of opening it & playing with it be my b-day gift -- even though if we keep the stone, once set, it''ll become an anniversary treat for 10 years in November...so now I am wondering whether he is telling a fib and will actually have the stone by tomorrow and give it to me on Saturday. What do ya''ll think? Is he trying to pull a fast one???

Anyway - I will be playing with my camera as soon as I get the stone and posting pictures for feedback -- either this weekend or first of the week...

Thanks again & everyone have a great weekend!

Well, I sure hope he gets it home for your birthday. Happy Birthday in advance.

You sound just like my friend in TX, btw. Makes me smile to see a "y''all" now and again.

That''s great news! I don''t think you will go wrong with the AGS0 stone! Please come back with pictures for us!

Update: Found the paperwork in my hubby''s car..and he isn''t fibbing-- the wire transfer will take a day to go thru, then James Allen will ship the stone -- so it really will be Monday when it arrives..and my husband will be out of town

Oh well -- I''ll have to muster more patience than I''d hoped! That gives me the weekend to experiment with finding the macro mode on my camera!

Never mind... Anxiety is fun too!

I came to this thread late, but if you're still curious as to the size difference, here are the two stones you were considering:
You tell me, which one is bigger?

Stebbo! Are those actual size representations of the two stones I was considering? How did you do that?

Looking at them while flashing, I''d say stone 1 is just barely distinguishably larger -- but does that represent the first stone I listed (the 2.72 carat) ? Or the one I ordered (2.86 carat) ?

I''m fascinated! Tell me more! I''m gonna go stare at it again...

I just re-read your post! Those ARE actually represesnting my stones. How or with what program did you do that? Do they also actually illustrate table size? I sit my imagination or does the second one show a slightly smaller table like the 2.86 carat has?

I''m totally enthralled. Please explain!

Stebbo, the comparison would be much more useful if you''d place the stones side by side. And 3shebabes, remember that the actual stones are MUCH smaller than his pictures. So the difference in size will be MUCH harder to detect in real life.

Purposely put separately as 3shebabes won''t be wearing both, but here they are side by side:

And a more real life size - what you see on the screen at normal viewing distance should match what you'll see on your hand from about 10 inches away (assuming you're running 1024x768 or above)

Thanks, Stebbo!

I think this is more lifelike....

Second one looks bigger....

Nice work El ( still think the second one)
