I am thinking about selling my marquise cocktail ring. I would need to get the center certed first. Does anyone know if GIA will grade it set? This is the ring…

No. The stone must be out of its setting. Pretty ring!

Unfortunately they will not, it needs it be loose. EGL does, but they are often unreliable with their grading.

The ring is gorgeous, by the way!

Thanks. I freaking LOST the GIA cert. And there is no engraved number.

If you've got the report number, GIA will issue a duplicate as mentioned above and won't require an inspection. If you don't have the report number, it may be in your appraisal paperwork and if you don't have it there it may be in the files of the jeweler who sold it to you.

Depending on how you're planning on selling it, it may not be worth the time and expense to pull it send it to the lab and reset it. This may be a case where an appraisal may be better for the task at hand.

True, maybe I could just send it to you…I don't have the number.I DO have the original owner's name? I'm not sure I'm going to be able to track it down….

Will an appraisal be enough to sell it private sale? I know everyone seems to want the GIA cert...

Yes, that’s what everyone wants. I’m just not sure if it’s worth the costs for you to deliver it.

I’ll walk through an example:

A 0.75 SI1/I/marquise with good GIA documentation is going to net you about $1000-$1400 for the stone.
The same stone with lesser paperwork is going to get you something like $700 to maybe $1000.
The difference has to do with your own sales skills and that GIA branding.
GIA is going to charge $78
Insured shipping two directions, assuming you don’t live in Carlsbad or NYC will be about $35 per direction.
Pulling will be $10 or so. Resetting will be probably about $50. Maybe more if there’s prong damage. It may go as high as $150.
That’s $208 in costs and you’ll mess around with this for something like 2 months. That’s quite a bit of pain for an expected $92 gain.

Thanks Neil! I do know the stone is a D color, VS2 .87 carats based on the GIA…I think I may just get an appraisal and try to sell on my own.

Having Victor make my new e-ring has been a double-edged sword. I am now critical of all my previous jewelry.  I would love to reset it into something more like this:
