Hi!

Im looking for a round diamond for an engagment ring, im going to set it in a Cartier Destinee setting and i dont know which one is a better stone.

One is a 1.0 Ct H color, VS1

The other one is 1.5CT, J color, VS2

Both have GIA certificates, with a VG cut.

I dont know if 1Ct is enough or is it too small? and is it good to sacrifice Color and Clarity to buy the 1.5 ct?

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks

Hi vicpop,

This really doesn't tell us a lot about the stones. That said, I would buy nothing less than an EX cut.

Neither. VG from GIA is not good enough.

What makes a diamond look bright, white and sparkly is the cut. The one thing you do not want to skimp on is the cut.

Drop down to eyeclean SI1 for the clarity. And go for an EX cut from GIA. And make sure that the HCA tool gives it a 3 or lower. https://www.pricescope.com/tools/hca

It's not being a snob. It's being an educated consumer. You want to put your money where you will notice it the most. Cut is where you will notice it and get the best return on your investment.

The first question that needs to be asked is if you already have a second hand Cartier Destinee setting? Because if you do, it needs a specific size stone and it is unlikely that a 1 ct and a 1.5 ct are going to both fit properly. I am almost positive Cartier will not set customer stones, so I am assuming you have a way to purchase a setting through another source?

After we know more about the setting, we can better advise you on a stone. But as others have said, start with GIA excellent stones and we can help you narrow down the better ones of those.

+1 on an excellent cut, while there are some nice VG's they are harder to come by. Another thing to consider if you are looking to dip on color is that a great cut will produce more light return and in such aid in masking the color or a J stone per say. If you are considering I's and J's it may not be a bad idea to pair them with stones that offer slightly larger tables 58-60% to accommodate more brilliance and help to mask the color better. I have seen some super white looking J's with approx 60/60 table depths.

Also +1 for SI1 as most will be eye clean in and around the 1-1.5ct mark, you could possible even go with an SI2 if you are working with a vendor you trust to give an honest opinion of whether or not it is eye clean.

I subscribe to the buy what you can see or cant for that matter and get as big as you can with an outstanding cut.

Thanks!
Diamondseeker, i plan to have a custom platinum setting made resembling the Cartier Destinee Solitaire. so it can acommodate whatever stone i get.

Im having trouble finding EX stones in Mexico, most of the dealers i have seen have VG or Good Cut grade stones.
