Which do you like.....why?

So... I'm waiting to see the diamond.. not because I don't want to see it.. but because David has convinced me I should let him set it in the setting I want... NO OBLIGATION to buy it.. but says he likes the stone so much he would be thrilled to feature it for sale on his site in the setting I've chosen even if I don't end up purchasing the diamond. (I think he would like the claw prongs better.. but he's humoring me on the old fashion/traditional ball prongs and bars at the end of the baguettes). So.. three weeks now to wait... patience is not my virtue.. I hope tons of people get engaged so I have a bunch of new bling to look at while I wait.

David picked side stones. They are K .62 tctw. He took a picture inside a box so I could see how they would fit together.

Ignore all the lovely lint.. this was just to look at size. He thought they could be bigger.. I was excited they were not bigger.

Here is a great EC ring with side baguettes and I like the proportions. Unfortunately I don't have a great head-on shot. But they look a little smaller in proportion to the center stone to me. I need to look back at your 5 ct inspiration ring, too.

Your inspiration ring has perfect sized baguettes for that diamond. I think these are too big for this stone.

Yup, DS made it very clear. You need smaller stones. In my opinion.

I agree. Smaller ones definitely could work beautifully as well.
In truth, my thought was to have our cutters form a point at the outside edge, turning these into long shields. In which case the extra size works great.

Still, even if we leave the ends as they are, I love a slightly larger baguette as it allows more light play than a more narrow one.
It all comes down to personal taste for sure.

I think it looks great!!! They certainly make your center look whiter. not sure if that was intended, but I like it and think it'll look great!

That's a pretty ring DS.. you have all kinds of pictures saved. I am 100% certain I would not want them bigger. The ring you are showing has nice proportions. I like the look of these. I plan to show them to the hubby tonight...

I have saved a lot of favorites over the years! Hmmm, I like shields with maybe ovals and cushions, but I love baguettes more than anything with emerald cuts! Your inspiration ring would be one of my dream rings! But I am sure whatever you choose will be beautiful!

+1... I think with baguettes, they need to be substantial to have sufficient flash and these ones are a very good size. For me, I would not go smaller... i'd even go bigger... but hey, that's me!

A few design aspects that apply here to pretty much all baguette /shield rings:
Size of center really matters
In the case of a five carat rock, the baguettes will need to be set way lower than the girdle of the center diamond
In the case of a 2 carat diamond, it's possible to set the baguettes, or shields at a height close to the girdle of the center.
Stripes or side diamonds
In the case of some baguette rings, the side stones are positioned, and sized as "stripes" running down the shank.
When the proportion, and setting style is modified a bit, they can function more as "side stones" in a three stone ring. In that way, they can offer additional light play, and optical interest points on the ring. The Baguette and center stone have much greater effect on each other when the baguette is set closer, and has some additional size

Both style can be very beautiful IMO.

He liked it and likes the idea of points on the ends. (I never can figure him out, I would have guessed bars)

My thought is will it have more presence since with the sides at .31 each? (knowning it will not come close to the coverage of the 5 ct) Again, I try and remember this thing is all blown up to see it and when it gets on my finger it's going to be so different.

I do like the color of the side stones. In the picture they look to be a perfect match and this was a big concern for me. Interesting comment about it making the center appear whiter. I thought that too but just thought it was the angle of the picture so I didn't really stop to think about it knowing the picture quality was not that great lint and all .

Wow! I haven't been around much for the past week or so, so I'm just catching up on your thread! I'm not sure if I mentioned in your last thread...actually it might have been wolfmommas awhile back, but I saw a really low colored EC at a local pawnshop many months ago. I was in a rush and didn't ask to take a closer look, and when I went back it was gone! Now whenever I think of that stone I'm convinced that I missed the deal of the century.

When I purchased my asscher I was convinced that I needed to keep the color up, having been told over and over that step cuts show body color so much more than other cuts. Now though I'm convinced that I could love a low colored EC, especially if it had a nice keel. I think of them the same as other antique cuts, there is something very vintage about them and the body color just adds to the appeal. I'm not sure that I would be satisfied with a lower color as my e-ring, but as a RHR... .

I think that when it comes to fancy cuts your eyes really have to decide. My asscher has a slightly larger table than many would consider ideal (66%) and it wasn't quite square, but once I had it in my hands and was able to assess it myself none of that mattered, I just knew that I loved it and that I just had to have it. Of course a year later I decided that I wasn't content with the size...but hey what PSer hasn't gone through that once or twice or several times?!

the lines go beautifully together in this combination, in my opinion!

I would like for the side stones to be a little bit smaller. They seem a bit too big for me and overwhelms the center.

The Leon ring that DS posted in my mind has the perfect proportions.

I too love the idea of the pointed ended but would go smaller rather than bigger size wise.

Of course this is all taste- also important to remember that once the stones are trimmed and set they will be positioned in a way that angles the down the finger- which will make them appear slightly smaller.
Also- when comparing to other rings, look at all the factors that will affect the look:
Size of center stone- as I mentioned before, the larger the center stone, the lower the bags in relation
Shank design - for example, three sided pave presents differing considerations IMO)

IMO the three sided pave ring's side stones appear a bit stubby in one of the photos- but this is all personal taste.

So.. I'm attaching a picture of the setting I chose... use your imagination it has a great big yellow diamond in it I studied every setting on DBL's site.. and I also looked at one LM has on the Art of Platinum with the same pointed sides.. it's the reason I ultimately went with a little bigger sides... Also, I will wear this primarily on my right hand.. and every now and then as my wedding ring.. I thought going with more of a three stone look (little larger stones) versus smaller more e-ring setting would lend itself better to a RHR...

It will be all Platinum.

Nielseel.. I know you are hunting a lower color stone... I think this K will be very interesting.. considering I went from an M in my Tranny to this.. I'm actually moving up the food chain..
