Where to buy authentic second-hand designer handbags?

One day I would like to own a real designer handbag.

Can anyone recommend sites where people sell authentic used bags?

Extra points for non-US sites (because often American sellers don't post overseas and if they do, the postage is very expensive).

Next time you are in a tourist spot that caters to high end holiday makers from overseas, always find 5 min to check out the local charity store

more often than i would have thought they donate a tonn of their stuff to make room for their holiday purchases and that includes designer bags and garments and shoes

I had bought only retail handbags and was very new to the "game" when I decided to get a monogram LV bag. I sold my brand new (bought at a LV boutique) bag and matching belt on TheRealReal and bought a used monogram bag there. In terms of money spent, it was probably money out the window. But I was never going to carry a rose colored patent leather looking bag or wear that belt. The monogram canvas bag that everyone else has I use every day. Trust TheRealReal. They are very careful going over what one consigns. I have consigned a lot with them, much of it new with tags or new in boxes, otherwise in excellent condition. I trust buying from them.

If you’re buying online, then it’s a bit hit and miss generally. Some places will have local independent boutiques that vet their bags first so they might be more reliable.

What‘s the bag/brand you’re after? Some do go on sale, can be purchased tax free at airports etc and needn’t cost thousands.

Naughtypidgins nest (npnbags.co.uk) have a small but usually good quality selection.

Hermes would be the dream but unrealistic!

In reality, i would really like, in order of preference:

Chloe
Chanel
Coach

I checked them out and wow, huge selection! International postage is pretty steep but I'll definitely have a good detailed browse on there, thank you!

Try Vestiaire Collective

Try Ann's Fabulous Finds

Hermes bags cost an arm and a leg and Chanel ones aren’t far behind. Chloe goes on sale sometimes. See by Chloe or Coach on sale should be quite affordable.

The Real Real does have it issues with authenticity.

Given your list of preferences, I’d probably save up for a Chloe in the sale.

I like Fashionphile and the Luxury Closet.

not sure about their shipping policies but i purchased a bag from fashionphile and found them very honest / accurate in the description and photos.

I feel like TRR is a mixed bag (no pun intended!) - I've ordered from them and some of the items (clothes, jewelry) have had flaws that weren't noticed/disclosed/apparent in photos. I still like their site a lot in theory but it's made me shy away from some purchases I would have made otherwise.

There’s also Xupes.com, I think they have a shop in London and are also on ebay. They have Chanel, LV etc. Some of the prices are a bit high, I feel, for preloved, though!

I heard a lot of Chinese are selling second hand jewellery and bags on WeChat. But I don’t know where on wechat.

Thank you for posting this article, MsShnooks. I had no idea that any such information existed. It was fascinating.

It seems to me that, over time, The RealReal went downhill with employees being pressured to produce a lot of volume within a short period of time. But that is just the accusation of the company's detractors. I don't know if others view it differently. It certainly was an informative article, however! So thank you again for posting it.

I have not consigned anything in a few years, and I certainly have not bought anything. I wish I had the money to do so!

Deb :wavey:

You could try https://www.yoogiscloset.com/ - I've bought several things (bags and shoes) off them over the years. Always superb quality - exactly as described and the shipping from the US wasn't too horrendous.

I’ve heard good things about Ann’s Fabulous Finds, though I’ve never purchased from them myself.

I’ve been thinking about getting this but got scared by the Realreal getting coverage on authentication issues

It says no returns but if I get it and it’s obviously fake can I return it?

@MakingTheGrade

I’d imagine that the chances of that bag being fake are far slimmer than if you wanted a classic Hermes, Chanel or LV.

I'm in the UK and have bought from Naughtypidgins Nest before. Their service is great. The Finer Things Aberdeen also has a good reputation.

Good Lord, I would hope so!

I have not been dealing with The RealReal in recent years (although they have contacted me trying to get me to consign things and I considered doing so).

When I was consigning items I cannot tell you how any times an item I consigned was sold then returned! My money was "given" to me (on paper only) then taken away when the buyer decided she didn't want an item. I remember one pair of Ugg suede loafers, new in the box, being sold and then returned twice!!!

So when did this "no returns" policy start?

Oh it’s a “final sale” situation lol

What’s the law like in the US? Can sth be ‘final sale’ if it turns out fake or broken?

I have bought a couple pieces from the Realreal.com and fashionphile, mostly SLG's-two wallets and a LV monogram adjustable strap. Oops, I bought one bag from the Realreal. It is a LV that they quit making in the marine color mahaina leather before I could purchase it. I saved almost 2K and it was in like new condition. I couldn't pass that one up, and I still love it.

@MakingTheGrade I’ve heard it said by designer purse enthusiasts that The Real Real will refund if the bag is proven to be a knockoff by a professional authenticator.

If the cost of getting it authenticated still makes it a good deal, then you could use a good credit card like Amex that will stand behind you and take that gamble.

Yeah I’m also nervous because I did some googling and couldn’t find any other images of that exact purse model which makes me kind of suspicious..

Fashionphile is good. I haven't ever bought handbags from them because I'm not really a handbag person, but I have friends who are and who love Fashionphile, and I've bought multiple pairs of shoes and several scarves, mostly other colors of styles I already have one direct from the brand, and comparing them they all seem identical save for color. I've never had to return anything to Fashionphile.

TheRealReal can have issues with authenticity but they are very easy to return to. They don't necessarily have the correct size or condition listed and the pictures can be overedited to the point of missing things, or randomly only showing the back of an item, or other weird stuff. But, like I said, I've never had a problem returning.

I would be careful with this as WeChat is also where many of the "superfakes" are sold.
