Hello, All

I'm starting this thread because I need to clear my head a bit, and I would greatly appreciate your thoughts on this concern of mine. So thank you in advance for your consideration.

A few months ago I purchased a spectacular rose cut ring from Intergem (strictly as a consumer). The moment I saw it, I was smitten. I'd been looking for a rose cut ring for awhile, but it needed to be the right one, ya know? It glistened and danced in the bright lights of the convention center, and it performs just as wonderfully outside, at home, and under fluorescent office lights. I really do love it! The two main trilliant/pear shapes have a very attractive green tint most of the time and flash beautiful pastels off their facets. The white RBs sparkle like mad. The center step cut trapezoid adds a nice contrast. The pics don't capture its smoky transparency very well. The larger stones have visible inclusions if you look for them, but they just add to the charm to me. Not sure if they show up in the pics.

Its totals about 2.83ctw of white and "champagne" diamonds (though I'm skeptical of the blanket "champagne" designation). It is 18k white gold and the marquises are set in 18k yellow gold cups!!! It is an original, one of a kind piece, and I got a good deal on it.

Now to my dilemma...For one, the ring takes up about half of my finger. It's a very sturdy piece with some heft to it (not as delicate as it looks), but I still worry it gets in the way as I work with my hands a lot. And, I've come to realize I am not much of an occasion jewelry person. I like pieces I can wear everyday. Since it isn't exactly comfortable for me for everyday wear, I haven't had it appraised or insured yet , which has resulted in me not wearing it at all. It just sits in its lovely box :blackeye: If I get it appraised, I'd like to do a full gemologist appraisal because I am wondering if any of the marquises are fancies and if I could get a better color identification for the trilliants and the trapezoid. But that's going to be $150 or so I'd only like to spend if I'm actually going to start wearing it....And since I haven't had it insured or appraised, I haven't had it sized down. Currently, it's about a 6 on the mandrel, but because of how it's designed, it would easily fit a 6.5, a full size too big for my middle finger.

I feel like I'm going in circles :loopy:, and am seriously considering selling it to find something that would be more of an everyday piece. Help please. Should I go ahead and sell? Have it insured and resized? Hold onto it for awhile longer and see if the answer comes to me?

I think it's super cool and unique but about as bad as it gets for practicality of daily wear.
Perhaps convert it to a broach which you can wear without worry.

I know you said you like rings you can wear all the time, but for this ring you could change your usual practice and only wear it for times when you are chillin.

Are all the stones diamonds?
That center one could be a Fancy White Diamond.

OMG Kenny I was thinking the same exact thing as you are .....I was also wondering why it would be $150 to have it appraised. Unless oyou are GIA certifing the stones. Even so I think you should spend upto $100 appraising it and it should be much on your home owners rider to insure it maybe $100 a year so do it and wear and enjoy it is is certainly unusual.

Kenny, it definitely may be worth changing up my thinking and keeping it around to be worn on more relaxing days. Or finding another way to make it work by turning it into something else - hadn't considered that.

All the stones are diamonds. It hadn't occurred to me the center could be a fancy white, as it shows a little more gray in real life. But the smokiness of it makes me think you could be onto something.

Thanks very much for your thoughts/suggestions!

Thanks heididdl! Since some of these stones have unusual coloring, I'd like to get a full gemologist appraisal, and was thinking I might just go all the way and have an independent appraiser look at it because I really want an expert opinion if I'm going to go ahead and do it. I can be a little black and white sometimes, but I'm sure there are other options if I look into it.

Have it converted into a pendant. It is beautiful but looks like it will catch on everything.

If it's sized and insured, do you picture yourself wearing it very often? If it's still only going to be worn occasionally, I think I'd sell it and buy something more suited for everyday wear.

Hi,

I think it looks as if it was a brooch that was made into a ring when brooches went out of style. I love it as a brooch, not so much as a ring for all the reasons you gave. Lovely piece though.

Annette

patricias, I've thought about it a bit and don't think I see myself wearing as anything other than a ring, unfortunately. I rarely wear any sort of jewelry other than rings actually.

Junebug, I guess I'm starting to realize I still wouldn't wear it very often if I had is sized and insured. If I put the effort into it, I may wear it once a month. Trying to figure out if that's worth it to me, as I really do love everyday pieces.

Annette, I wish I wore brooches, as I do think it would look lovely as one.

Thanks everyone for your input!

I hope I didn't infer there's something wrong with owning pieces that are worn only on special occasions…it's fine if you're ok with that! My comments were influenced by your statements of preferring pieces that can be worn every day, or at least fairly often - and also by the fact that I feel the same way lol - good luck with your decision!

It's so pretty! I can't bear to sell it if it were me. Turn it into a pendant for daily wear instead?

junebug, I didn't read your response as inferring anything. In fact, I think we're on the same page. So no worries, and thanks for your response!

Thanks Ashleigh! It truly is beautiful and the pics don't do it justice! I just can't see myself wearing it as a pendant. And think I'm still heading down the path of selling it.

For this would come down the dollars and cents.

I don't like pieces warming a drawer.

If I paid less for the piece than the component diamond parts could be bought, especially the two rose cuts, then I would likely keep it and reset the pears into something more wearable. The other diamonds I would likely sell.

If I paid more than the two main rose cuts, I would sell the ring as-is and look for something I would wear.

That makes a lot of cents, Dreamer ;)) I couldn't resist the pun. I hadn't thought of it that way actually. I have no idea what the two pear rose cuts would go for by themselves, but anticipate could be in the realm of what I paid for it. But it's so spectacular the way it is, I'm not sure I could fathom breaking up the piece. The craftsmanship is really stellar and a lot of care was taken when making the graceful frame.

I'm just full of excuses, aren't I?

Then insure it and wear it and stop thinking about it you crazy lady!
