Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!! I hope everyone has a wonderful not too stressful day with the family or friends, or wherever you are. I have a lot to be thankful for this year. I have a wonderful Hubby-to-be (I find the word 'fiance' super awkward for some reason...anyway), a beautiful new engagement ring, and the cutest new puppy. I am also thankful for my parents and future family-in-law (not sure what to call them...) and of course my supportive and loving friends! :appl:

Ok, now that my Thanksgiving rant is over... I currently have a "problem"... well its not really a problem I guess...but it is a bit of a dilemma for me. Its a good dilemma though!

I currently have a 3.6 ct RB that is set in an extremely large/flashy setting, that I uses as my Right hand ring. I was fine with its large/flashy-borderline-gaudy appearance before when I didnt have an engagement ring because it was usually the only ring I wore. However, now that I wear my engagement ring every day... I find that my big-ol-honker of a ring is just sitting there untouched. The diamond is just so beautiful I find it a shame to just let it sit there... but I cant wear it with my ering because (1) the looks totally clash when worn together, because my ering is also a pretty big and bold ring, and (2) the setting is just so overpowering that I feel like my ering is no longer the center focus (which I feel it should be).

So I have three ideas:

(1) I could set the RB into a 3-stone or a 5-stone and wear it as a RHR for evening wear or when I feel like dressing up... But I am not sure if this would work...or if the RHR would still overpower my e-ring. Do any of you ladies have RHR where the Diamond is larger than your ering? The reason I think a 3 or 5 stone is because it is still a simple classy setting for the diamond, and I feel the look wont clash with my e-ring.

(2) Set it into a solitaire, take the diamonds out of the setting and make it into bands to stack with it and wear as a RHR... but does a solitaire feel to E-ringy for a RHR

(3) I could set it into a classic pendant and get a dbty necklace to wear with it. I am also liking this idea, but my only concern is... I guess I would be a little nervous wearing that large of stone on my neck... what if it falls off or the clasp comes loose ... it seems to happen to my mom ALL THE TIME. :nono: Can a jeweler make a necklace that maybe has a double securing system? I dont even know if that exists, I dont currently have a necklace/pendant combo that I love to wear so not sure how that works. Also, while I love wearing blingy jewelry, does anyone think this would be too large for a pendant?

I would love to hear some input and opinions and what you guys think I should do...

Here is the link to my original SMTB thread so you can get a better idea of what I mean. https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/my-3-01-cushion.180361/

Thank you lovely ladies (and gentlemen) for your help! And I really hope you all have a wonderful and totally-stuffed thanksgiving today!!!

This is a great problem to have! I would vote for a necklace, because in the photos both rings are beautiful attention-getters, and while they don't clash, I can see how together the attention might be diluted from your wedding set. You can have a necklace made without a clasp, if it's long enough to fit over your head ... but honestly, I'd say that on a good, strong platinum chain, with a secure clasp? Your diamond is going to be safer than it is on your finger. You're a lot less likely to bump your neck than you are your finger, y'know? I've been wearing my diamond pendant for, oh, three years now, and a lifetime of different necklaces on less durable metals ... and never, never have I had an issue. Whatever you decide, take pics!

I would do a beautiful necklace in a secure setting. What a lovely problem to have!

Re: What to do with a 3.6 ct Diamond?!? and Happy Thanksgivi

Circe - I am definitely leaning towards the pendant. I am thinking of setting it into a simple basket-like pendant. I was just worried the diamond wouldn't be secure enough...I'm gonna try to see if their is a super secure dbty... I love that look and think it would look so wonderful with a pendant. I hope you are having a fabulous turkey day!

AprilBaby - I count my blessings everyday! especially on thanksgiving day! Hope you are having a wonderful day!

I'd be feeling very thankful to have that problem! :-) How fun! Enjoy investigating your options! :-)

Re: What to do with a 3.6 ct Diamond?!? and Happy Thanksgivi

HI:

Get a colored stone of equal size and set it in a bypass style. Nyet to three stone and pendant.

Use the remaining stones for a tennis bracelet or diamond bangle.

cheers--Sharon

It would be easy to create a necklace with a "safety clasp'" One way would be have a clasp on both ends of the chain, and place a jump ring one or two inches from each end of the chain. Secure each clasp to the opposite jump ring and - voila! You have redundant clasps!

Ooh that sounds perfect!!!! Would I have to custom make this or does a jeweler usually have this in stock?

Re: What to do with a 3.6 ct Diamond?!? and Happy Thanksgivi

I would also go with a pendant or maybe sell it and buy another RHR that didn't compete with you ering.

Re: What to do with a 3.6 ct Diamond?!? and Happy Thanksgivi

Since you have large setting for your e-ring, I think you could do a simple three stone right hand ring.
The other option could be a pendant, but I wouldn't put too many diamonds on the chain or else it might be too dressy for daily wear. It should be insured no matter how you set it so you won't have to worry about loss or damage.

I've never actually seen this but it should work. You'd have to get your jeweler to make it for you.

I think pendant it is! My mother gifted this to me when I finished taking the Bar..so I have sentimental connections with it as it represents a a very large accomplishment for me :appl:

I LOVE the look of the three stone ring... my favorite 5 stone is Yssie's swoopy trellis ring :lickout: ..but I am leaning towards setting it as a pendant for the time being with a few different chains I can dress up or dress down.

I am currently in the middle of setting the other diamond in the other large RHR.. I am trying to find a mate for it and make it into a pair of stud earrings. With all the new beautiful studs that are popping up on PS I am getting the itch for my own pair that just wont quit...so since I am not wearing that RHR either ... Anyway, the more I think about it, and the more I consider christmas is looming around the corner, I am thinking I may wanna keep some extra cash in my pocket :$$): . So pendant now...later... 5 stone ring. Kicking the can down the road..doo doo doo

I think I'm going to need to see a pic of this 'problem' of yours...

I'd like to have a 3.6 ct. problem....
Ummm....where are the pics of this problem?...

Re: What to do with a 3.6 ct Diamond?!? and Happy Thanksgivi

Hi Goldfish!

what a set of honkers!! don't get me wrong, they are lovely.

that said, in Europe very very few people would wear any of these alone, and I think really almost nobody two of them, one per hand.
One of the topics I very rarely seen discussed in this forum is exactly this one: when does 'much' become 'too much'?

In certain working environments flashy jewelry can create social distance, frictions, and skepticism on the professionality of the woman wearing it. I personally do not agree with any of these prejudices, and would never draw conclusions on a person based on the jewelry she wears, but it seems to be a matter of fact that these type of judgments are made all the time.

I do not know to what extent being somewhat aligned with what other people around you do, and whether this could have any consequences on your work life, but perhaps you could also want to consider whether any of your friends and the people you meet in your daily life ever wear two impressive pieces of jewelry at a time.
If this is not the case, maybe a pendant is a better idea, as i think it would look a little bit more discrete :wink2:

I'm a fan of the 3 stone idea--just make sure the side stones are proportionate. I think it's a shame to have such a beautiful diamond on a pendant and not be able to view it directly at all times!

I was just about to link to your stunning three stone as an inspiration piece! I think it is incredible and that is absolutely what I would do with a spare 3 carat lying around (happens to me all the time really!). :)

Re: What to do with a 3.6 ct Diamond?!? and Happy Thanksgivi

I would be afraid to set a stone that large around my neck. Besides, a stone that big should be on your hand where you can admire it often 8-) If I had a beautiful stone that large I would definitely have the most beautiful RHR setting made - possibly an antique replica that does not resemble an E ring in any way. You're ering setting in itself is TDF and most unusual. I am sure there is someone out there (Perhaps the same designer who created your engagement ring?) who can design a smaller setting for your other hand that won't compete with your ering, perhaps a setting of similar proportions to your ering? You could put the stone in a bezel and surround it with colored gemstones such as rubies, sapphires, or emeralds, with more diamonds surrounding, with a substantial shank covered in diamonds? :naughty:

Edit: to add pics

P.S. a three stone would be fabulous too! You could even use colored gemstones as the side stones and then Halo the entire three stone with diamonds? I could go on and on… :loopy:

Re: What to do with a 3.6 ct Diamond?!? and Happy Thanksgivi

Mom2boys and Rosebloom - I was actually just thinking about this last night as I was going to bed... I was so sure I wanted to set it on a pendant... but then as I was lying in bed I started thinking... maybe I shouldnt. Maybe I should wait a little while to set it really nicely into what I really want... which is a stunning 3 (like yours Mom2boys) or 5 stone. But I am SUCH an instant gratification type of person most times and impatience tends to get the better of me more times than I'd care to admit :nono: ...

Re: What to do with a 3.6 ct Diamond?!? and Happy Thanksgivi

Luxie - I LOVE that one with the rubies in it! When I was thinking about what to do with this stone, one of the thoughts that popped in my head was a three stone with some really pretty reddish/pink sapphires ... but then I thought that maybe I could grow tired of it? I have a few colored stones that kinda get neglected now too :nono: ...I am totally playing favorites. Worst. Jewelry. Mamma. EVER!

Hi Dianabarbara!

I totally hear what your saying.. a spent much of my time growing up in europe, half my family lives over there... and I will say it is such a rarity where my family lives (in scandinavia) to see anyone wearing any diamonds. period. I remember when I showed them my engagement ring.. my dad said "wont you be worried walking around with that on that someone may chop off your arm?" ..that lead into a little discussion about the differences between where we live in europe and where we live in the states.

Where we live and my social group of friends it isn't uncommon to have a 1.5 -2 ct ering. My gf's tend to wear A LOT more flashy jewelry than I do. Which is cool, but I usually like to wear only my ering on an everyday basis. Then when I want to get dressed up and look nice I will only wear a few pieces. Earrings, Ering, stack a few bracelets and a watch and call it a day.

I havent really had a situation yet where any of my friends have made any comments or remark that I could interpret as snide. Thank god! If they did, I would be done with them! I have a very low tolerance for most people ... which is probably why I only have a handful of friends. But that's just me! So, thankfully, I have no problems wearing big blingy things, because any person who says anything is someone who isn't my friend, and therefore, who's opinion doesn't really matter to me anyway. That being said, I still like to be tastefully adorned and I do limit how much jewelry I wear at once...unless it's a really really fancy occasion like a wedding. Then all bets are out! :naughty:

I am also thinking about a ring like KristyDarling's. It is one of my favorites I have seen on PS. it is just so clean, classy, and beautiful. I remember the first time I saw it I had to keep coming back day after day to just ogle and drool

Do you think this style of ring would make a nice RHR or is it too engagement-ring-y?

That is one of my all time favorites. If you go this route I would definitely suggest having Leon Mege make it. He has such a great eye for proportions which I think is the key to making this style work.

So I've been fantasizing about this bypass ring - could be spectacular! A blazing pink sapphire? A yellow diamond? So many beautiful options.

Thank you! I thought it was a fun setting. Im pretty sure it was designed for an oval ...but I liked the gap - it made the ring look like a cats eye!
