So that a better understanding can be had of what a customer is getting for their money
- how should these EGL graded diamonds really be seen as?
- how do you know which EGL lab they were graded at?

In person by professionals is how these diamonds should be seen.

Have union diamond call their vendors about the diamonds to see if they are worth calling in.

Have UD do an initial vetting with their eyes to see how off the diamonds are from the reports.

Those that are pretty on point have UD send them to an independent appraiser listed on the PS site.

This is the only way to know if you are getting what you paid for...

If you consider the grading to be unreliable, don't rely on it. Applying a conversion formula doesn't make it better.

As a general rule; Keep in mind that the value of a round brilliant diamond is greatly affected by the GIA cut grade.
An appraiser won't be able to give you that info- and nor will they be able to guarantee what GIA would grade a diamond in terms of color or clarity.
As Neil mentioned, there's no formula to figure out how badly a stone has been graded by a secondary lab.
One thing that, in general, is true- the cutter who submitted it had a good reason to skip GIA. The reasons have to do with salebility and increased profit gained by avoiding GIA.

The only way to know what an EGL diamond should be graded is to send it to GIA or AGS.

An EGL-graded diamond is a gamble, and the odds are with the house.

Well said!!

Diamonds are both 1.51c H / IF round diamonds

GIA graded one = $15,000
EGL graded one = $8,700

Which adages apply? (Select all that apply)
1. Wish in one hand, spit in the other, see which one fills up first.
2. Trust everyone but cut the cards.
3. If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.
4. Try to learn something about everything and everything about something.

HA! This!

No need for complicated formulas or processes to solve this question.

Just get a diamond from GIA or AGS and skip EGL all together.

EGL International? I'd figure 4 color grades off. But I'd never, ever buy one because you are more likely to overpay since it is probably worse than you think.
