What should I put in this setting???

So I reset my original engagement ring a few years back into this setting…but recently I decided to move the diamond back to my original Tacori setting. Now I have this setting without a center stone and I'm not sure what to do with it. I went to one of those jewelry buying places and they wanted to give me $260 YEA RIGHT! She did suggest setting it with a colored stone or maybe a CZ before I try to sell it. What do you think would be the best thing to put in this?

To be honest, I wouldn't put anything in it if you want to sell it. It's such a beautiful setting, it should sell on its own merit. However, if you do want to put a center stone in there, maybe a diffused sapphire???

We'll I initially wasn't going to put anything in it but I was told it would sell better "complete"

It will probably be easier to sell it without putting a stone in it. That's a popular style and many people would probably like to reset their own stone into it.

That's a gorgeous setting which should sell for far more than $500. The new owner probably would prefer it empty to set their own stone into it. If you like, create a listing on DiamondBistro and LoupeTroupe with a shout out in the PS Preloved section of the forum.

Yeah -- I think it will sell well without a centre stone.

You don't want to keep it? It's very pretty. We could help you find a colored stone to put as the center.

Well my initial thought was just to sell it because I wouldn't ever wear it but my mother just dropped a hint that she doesn't mind hand me downs and that her birthday is coming lol. I would have to find a stone if I was to give it to her. I don't know anything about colored stones though....

Awww!!! We absolutely could find a stone that your mother would love! Does she have a favorite color?

When is her birthday? If it's in March, maybe we could help find a nice aquamarine? How big of a centre stone would it fit?

Feel free to read this, it's a helpful intro to coloured stones. :) https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/new-to-coloured-gemstone-buying-read-this-first.174284/

Het birthday is in June but I mentioned a blue sapphire and she was like ooohhhh!

I'm not sure if she really has a favorite. She would love anything as long as it looked pretty in the setting. The stone I had in there was a 1ct round.

I think I would be open to any color as long as it was sparkly :naughty:

Unlike cut numbers and percentages with diamonds, colored stones are judged on appearance and refractive angles. So long as the cut appeals to you, it's a good one. Bad cuts might include: Bowties, windows, half and half shadowing, etc. Neither of these will have those issues.

Dan is a popular precision cutter and his stones have fantastic polish.

How do I find a blue just for comparison?

It's a sapphire that has a method of heat treatment in which elements are added to greatly enhance the color. They're much much less expensive than unheated or non-diffused sapphires that are heated and are the same color. If your mother doesn't care about treatment, and wants a pretty stone to look at in the setting, it's an option. It's a real sapphire, just treated to enhance the color.

Here's an ebay example of a diffused sapphire.

Hmmm that looks a little dark to me? Are all the blue ones that dark? I don't really like the idea of the treated ones

No, they're not all that dark. Some are very pretty. I don't know the budget for what you want to put in there, but that would help if you want people to help you find untreated stones.

I wouldn't say I have a budget necessarily...if it's a beautiful stone I'm open to anything.

What's your budget range then? 1k 3k? 500 bucks?

Blue sapphires is one of the most expensive stones if you want a nice unheated one I the classic blue color

And 6.5 (normal mm for a 1 ct, though I'd have your jewelry make certain that would fit) will be $

I think the yellow sapphire that Freke linked to (acstones--- Barry) has the potential to look amazing in that setting. Yellow diamonds are often set that way, and he notes this stone is brilliant so it could very well be spectacular yet not over the top so she could wear it regularly with anything. Hmmmm, maybe I need to look for something like this!!!

Depending on the exact blue you like and treatment, it could be anywhere from $50 to $5000 so having a fair idea of what colour your mum likes best and a budget will narrow things down considerably. A 1 ct diamond is around 6.5 mm which translates to a 1.5 carat sapphire. When it come to coloured gemstones though, go by the measurements, not the carat weight (although knowing the approximate carat weight helps in the initial search).

These would probably fit. 6.6 and 6.5... One is about 850, one about 2k.
I'd imagine your budget isn't that high but you said its flexible, so no harm in seeing how flexible ;)

Wow this is really hard! I like all of them... I looked on that website last night and there are sooooo many pretty ones

What's the story behind alexandrite? I know this is her birthstone but I can't really find it anywhere?

I like the saturation on the bottom yellow stone a lot. Pertaining to white metal and yellow gems, in my experience, white metal tends to wash out yellow stones. I prefer setting them in a yellow metal, like 14 or 18K gold.

I think a blue stone would be very pretty as well in just white metal. If the yellow stone is saturated enough, it would be okay in there, but it has to be really saturated IMO. To me, yellow stones, even saturated ones, always do best in yellow gold.

Multicolour.com, and picking out a fine alex is very expensive. Many in the average price range are not worth it IMO. They often tend to be muddy colored.

The nice thing about having an empty setting is that you can 'buy' stones and try them out and see what really is the best option for your Mom........Just have the setting measured (not carat size) and check the return policy before 'buying' a stone to approve in the setting. It seems that might be your best choice since you are exploring so many varieties/colors and appear to have $$ to play with.
