Just to add, if you don't choose to get a stone set, an empty setting is often referred to as a "semi-mount". When I buy on ebay and others, I look for photos of the stamps and disclosure of which diamond tester was used to test the stones. I agree that under $200 is about right if it is 14k. Platinum would be a bit more. My guess is that it used to hold a round stone. I like the idea of getting a stone set and agree amethyst or even topaz are good and low-cost option that may open-up the market to those looking for gifts under the tree.
The color of the baguettes (center) look quite yellow in the photo. My guess is that is from the light in that room. Try to take photos in indirect natural light. You'll get less yellow and the setting will be more attractive.
